Of all the California family vacation destinations, San Diego is hard to beat when it comes to variety. Expansive beaches stretch along the coastline and within an hour's drive, you'll find great hiking. There are a lot of active things your family can do in San Diego, and it's one of the country's most outdoorsy cities. Many San Diegans are runners, bikers, surfers, and hikers—and since the weather is beautiful for most of the year, they can be outdoors all year long. Unless you visit in December or January, you should encounter sunny skies and balmy temperatures. Here are a few ideas for San Diego fun that is family friendly.
The San Diego Zoo
When you think of the family vacations California can offer, you might remember the fame of the San Diego Zoo. Any family trip to San Diego should include a visit. One great thing that the zoo offers is a yearly pass that's not much more than the cost of a day pass—perfect if you might come back within a year's time. The zoo's exhibits are dynamic, and feature a variety of animals. The zoo's real rock stars are animals like their pandas and koalas, but you'll get a kick out of the variety of other creatures there—from lions, tigers, and bears to free-roaming peacocks and pink flamingos.
Water Sports
San Diego's reputation as one of the best California family vacation destinations is largely because of its beaches. They're perfect for relaxing in the sand, but if your family is feeling adventurous, you might try water sports like surfing or boogie boarding. Though the surfers you'll see in spots like Pacific Beach make it look easy, it's probably a really good idea to sign up for a lesson or two. It will be worth it once you finally stand up on the surfboard and feel the rush of what feels like walking on water.

Family vacations in California, like San Diego often have unique special events. Throughout most of the year, the city has street festivals. In Ocean Beach, there is an amazing Christmas parade with a variety of offbeat floats and people, and in the summer, a chili cook-off. You'll also find a variety of music festivals in San Diego—and most of them are free!
