Plan a New England Fall Foliage Tour!

Leave your cares behind on a fall foliage vacation!

New England Foliage

It never fails; when September and October come to New England, everything seems fresh and new. But nothing is new about the explosion of colors that fall brings to the northeast each year. So, put a twist on your fall foliage vacation by turning it into an epic (though effortless) road trip; pack the car up and head out for a spectacular drive through five scenic states! From Augusta, Maine to Old Saybrook, Connecticut, it will be hard to keep your eyes on the road. Of course any road trip gets old after the one-hour mark. Don't designate just one day to your New England fall foliage tour; make a few stops along the way and stay overnight in some of the coziest and most elegant vacation rentals around.

First up is Maine, aptly nicknamed “The Pine Tree State.” While nature puts on its most wondrous show of the year, play golf, shop for antiques, hike up mountains, fish for your supper (and handpick your side dish of fresh apples), or go on Bangor's spooky Candlelight Ghost Tour. Watch the leaves change color in your own backyard with a Maine rental! Stay close to the coast with a condo rental in Old Orchard Beach, Augusta, Bar Harbor, Bangor, Deer Isle, Sebago Lake, Wells, or York Beach.

New England FoliageState number two is none other than New Hampshire, and you'll be inclined to ditch your car keys here and instead absorb the sights on a relaxing train ride. Pictures of fall in New Hampshire look photoshopped, but once you've seen the scarlet and rosy red maples and dark purple oaks in person, you'll be a believer in the intense and nuanced beauty of the state. Since your New England road trip has taken you along the shore so far, try a vacation rental in Hampton Beach, Durham, or Portsmouth.

Let's move on to Massachusetts, where it's probably best to drive around Boston, rather than right through it. On the other hand, it can't hurt to call it a night in a center-of-the-action Boston vacation rental! After all, Boston lodging is right on the way. Fit in a history lesson or two as you soak up the marvelous Massachusetts scenery.

Your third stop is a Rhode Island vacation rental. Even though Rhode Island is the smallest state of this lot, it comes alive in the fall, so you'll have plenty to see and do. Continue to hug the ocean on your New England journey and spend one or two autumn nights in Providence or Narragansett rentals.

Cuddle up to a Connecticut vacation rental on your final vacation day (or first, depending if your trip's north or southbound). Cruise down meandering roads and highways, lined with gorgeous trees, and you'll suddenly love driving again. An Old Saybrook or Mystic vacation rental makes for great autumn accommodations.

The normal fall itinerary of pumpkin picking, haunted house braving, and festival attending will be well intact as you thoroughly explore New England's natural radiance, so don’t worry about missing out on a thing.

Considering your many affordable options for everything from Wells Beach rentals to Providence vacation homes, there's no reason to restrict your getaway to just one state.
