Ah, romance. It can be hard to come by sometimes. However, if you're in the right location, you might be able to rekindle any of that fire that has been lost over time, or just get lost in the bliss of your current love for one another. Whatever your reason for getting away (and honestly, do you really need a reason?), Maryland is the perfect place. The state motto people had it all wrong - the Free State is for lovers!

Set Sail

Maryland's coastline leaves little to be desired, so why not choose a rental near one of the best waterside towns in the state? Or, better yet - why not live on the water in a rental houseboat, letting you take in the scenery on the calm water and providing you with all of the amenities and privacy you'd expect from a house? Coastal life in Maryland is quite serene, and it might provide just the right amount of stress-free accommodation to allow you and your sweetie to heat things up.

Romantic Beaches

Chestertown

Located on the banks of the Chester River, this historic town blends its colonial architecture and landscapes with modern cultural experiences that will leave even the most solidified urbanites in awe. Enjoy a plate of fresh mussels or fried oysters while you gaze out at the water at the Fish Whistle, a longtime favorite of locals and visitors alike. If you prefer, classic comfort food favorites are also a specialty here, with meatloaf and mashed potatoes and classic baked macaroni and cheese that can make any picky eater a happy camper.

Looking for something a bit more upscale? Head to the Blue Heron Cafe, whose side street locale makes it the perfect place for a quiet night alone. Enjoy a carafe of wine for two and share a plate of crab cakes with beurre blanc, roasted duck of braised onion cioppino.

After you've fully satisfied your bellies, enjoy a walk along the brick sidewalks past 18th century homes and churches, or choose to browse for souvenirs at the many boutiques located here. True history fans may want to plan their visit around the Chestertown tea party, a full-scale re enactment of the local tea party very similar to the infamous event in Boston. Dress up in full colonial clothing, set foot on a classic tall ship or just take a seat and enjoy the festivities around you.

St. Michaels

The coastal town of St. Michaels is home to a number of nautical experts, providing you with plenty of opportunities to set sail and enjoy all of the romantic pleasures of the sea without any of the work! Sail Selina offers a Romantic Sunset Champagne Cruise, complete with hors d'oeuvres and plenty of picture-worthy moments. Lasting approximately two hours, the sailing trip takes place on the a historic family boat of a local resident, and is available to all from late April to the end of October during most years.

If you don't quite have your sea legs but still want to enjoy the views, there's plenty to enjoy on land in town as well! Pamper your soul at the Five Gables Inn and Spa, which includes a sauna, steam room and a large whirlpool tub. Those who indulge in a little retail therapy can find the luxurious and the quirky here, as a number of shops hold both types of items. A Wish Called Wanda provides one of a kind jewelry that's made by carefully selected artists, as well as gorgeous hand blown glass, world class metal work and much more.

Urban Escapes

Fort Washington

Located just over the state line from Alexandria lies Martini's, a club that caters to the over-30 crowd. Drinks are always pouring and the tunes are always grooving, with artists ranging from the O'Jays to 90s R & B legends. Locals make a point to dress sharp here, with pinstripe suits and well-tailored dresses always the norm. In between sets, enjoy a drink or two together in one of the horseshoe-shaped booths, which are perfect for an impromptu snuggle or two. Fort Washington is located in the Washington DC/Annapolis area.

Baltimore

Most of Charm City's clubs may cater to an 18+ audience, but in the Inner Harbor neighborhood, you'll find Paradox, also called the Dox. Open until the wee hours of the morning, Paradox always has a more mature crowd, and is the perfect place to truly let loose and unwind. After a few hours of dancing the night away, you can refuel at the onsite restaurant with a quick sandwich or pizza. Of course, if you're more interested in the drinks here, we don't blame you for it!
