For couples seeking intimacy seclusion, no other homes, garden of Eden Volcano

' 'Paradise Found!

There should be a six star review category. Hale Aloha Aina exceeded our expectations in every way. What a gem of a property. First, the cottage is absolutely beautiful, warm and inviting. When we stepped into the house we instantly felt like we belonged here. The fragrant smell of fresh ginger blooms and plumeria was romantic and played on all of our senses. We couldn't wait to start exploring the property. What fun to find such a great variety of fruit trees and exotic plants. Bananas, limes, avocados, pineapples and guavas to name a few. This is a virtual garden of Eden. No matter how much the rest of the island beckoned to us, (and it did) we always looked forward to coming home to Hale Aloha Aina for peace and relaxation.'

This vacation home is totally self-sufficient...Off the beaten path and off the Grid. Hale Aloha Aina is an ambassador for green living educating our guests on how simple it is to live off the grid using solar and propane. Solar runs the electrical appliances such as the lights, stereo, washer, dryer, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, etc. The stove, refrigerator, fireplace and hot water is operated on propane gas. Water is gravity feed so there is no need of a water pump. We even have a back up water source that supplies 500 gallons of water to the cottage in the event of an emergency. Previous guests have appreciated the experience and often recreate this system in their own homes. Extended stays may have to run the generator to power the system's batteries if there is no sun. The generator is very quiet and turns on with a key. Otherwise the system is efficient enough to just run on solar energy.

If for any reason you need assistance our grounds man, housekeeper and property manager are available to serve you. They are the friendliest people and live close to the hale. As you read the guests comments you will see how fortunate we are to have them and be able to provide this sanctuary for everyone to enjoy. Since it is their work, they take pride in creating the most enchanting playground for nature lovers. There are three acres of mowed lawn with an abundance of flora and tropical fruits that our guests have the opportunity to enjoy. Picking fresh fruit from the trees is one of the favorite things to do as well as just hanging out at the hale. There is so much to explore right in your back yard that many of our guests never leave the grounds.

Kona (koa) is more than two hours away, but most of our guests arrive in Kona and enjoy the beautiful drive to the hale. We recommend that you arrive before dark, but if that is not possible our directions are very thorough since many of our guests arrive late. It is all part of the adventure and we haven't lost anyone yet! Directions to the cottage and check in information will be available once you have confirmed your reservation. About the Owner

Tom and Missy purchased Hale Aloha Aina in 2001 and have rented the cottage full time since 2002. We have maintained an outstanding reputation for providing the highest standard in service, accommodations and amenities for a very affordable rate. Our housekeeper and groundsman take extra pride in their work because they know how special this place really us, our guests and for themselves. It is truly 'heaven on earth'! We are grateful for the aina (land) and the love it nurtures in all of us!

Missy works personally with each guest to help them plan their dream vacation. Having been raised on the Big Island, she can offer experience and knowledge from a local’s perspective as well. She worked as a hygienist for 20 years and now has a small business as a metalsmith and jewelry designer. You can find her work under the name of Silver Falls Jewelry.

Tom is a retired engineer of 30 years at Hewlett Packard. Currently he has a small archery business called Central Oregon Archery. He loves to teach Archery and volunteers most of his time to the communities youth.

In 2012 our son and grandchildren moved to Central Oregon after living abroad in the military for the past ten years. Having missed them so much... we have decided to stick around for while!

Guestbook comments from the owner

When you are driving to Hale aloha aina, you begin to wonder what you are getting into as you drive what seems like a long way up this country road (the first time; everything is always shorter once you understand the area). But as soon as you open the front door, you are like "wow, this is nice". And indeed it is. Well constructed, well designed, well situated, well provisioned, well decorated and I've never tasted such good water, so even the well is well. Centrally located to everything you want to see on the South side. Beautifully sunny every morning we were there (and the Caldera was quite active). Only a bit of vog one day; most of it seems to blow right around the west side and up to Captain Cook and Kailua (which I would not recommend staying in - we did later in the trip and were vogged in every day). The nights were full of stars, the mornings full of songbirds and I have never seen more beautiful horses anywhere than in Wood Valley and in other parts of the south island. Would I recommend this place to others? Without hesitation! Thanks Tom and Missy! This was money well spent and more than we expected! Oh, one more thing...kudos to their housekeeper...the place was spotless and dust free.

Our Favorite Place on Earth

  • 5 of 5
On our frequent trips to each of the Hawaiian islands, we NEVER go back to a vacation rental twice. Our recent and second trip to Hale Aloha Aina was the first time we broke that rule, because we've never been able to find another place that evokes the level of emotions that this perfect cottage does. There is no better place to be in love!

The Big Island is called big for a reason, and we can say that although we noted very high activity at the volcano and much larger plumes of volcanic fog than on our last trip, we never noticed it at or near the cottage, even though its only a 20 minute drive away. Every morning except one was bright sunshine and clear skies.

We did not stay for the 7th night as originally planned, in order to make it to Kauai for a vacation home rental that required we stay at least 5 days. That was the most expensive place we have ever booked at approx $500/night, a huge place on an oceanside bluff with hot tub, jacuzzi, and every amenity one could imagine, including access to its own private beach. Yet, we found that within a couple of days our minds and hearts were drifting back to your cottage, a place that makes us feel like no other vacation home we have ever rented on any island on 13 island trips.

And so, as we write this review, and since we've returned home a few days ago, we find our minds constantly drifting back to thoughts of Hale Aloha Aina, and the cottage, the outdoor shower, the stars, cooking for each other in a surprisingly well equipped kitchen, continuous walks around the beautiful and expansive property.

If there's a place on earth that brings a higher level or peace, intimacy, love and passion, we haven't found it yet. We'll keep looking, but in the meantime, can't imagine a trip to the Hawaiian islands without an extended stay at Hale Aloha Aina.

Owner's Response: Aloha Rob and Paula,

How wonderful that you feel so connected to the lush aina and sweet hale! After five years of renting our home, we never get tired of hearing what a wonderful experience it was for our guests. It fills my heart with joy that we can offer a place of peace and contentment for people like yourselves who just need some 'time out'. It is hard to put into words, but having a chance to just breathe is precious.

For our future guests who are concerned with the vog, it really depends on the trade winds. We can certainly say that it has affected our visibility of the coast line all the way to Kona at times and sometimes the sunrise is a yellow ball in a hazy glow. It is a spectacular site to see the lava enter the ocean and where on earth can you be in paradise and witness an active volcano. The Big Island is like no other Paradise on Earth!

I truly feel that the 'Mana' of Hale Aloha Aina is a living spirit that helps us to reclaim our connection to the Aina (earth) and brings us closer to those we love. Reading our guest comments says it all!

Together Time

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I celebrated our 15th anniversary last week at Hale Aloha Aina and had some great together time alone and secluded. It's hard to think of Hawaii as cool nights in a heavily wooded mountain area but that's what this is and was to our delight. Clean, comfortable and secluded - a genuine and unique big island experience.

I highly commend this rental to all seeking the same.

Owner's Response: What a great title... Together Time! That says it all and we are happy you enjoyed the seclusion and cool mountain climate. With 13 different climates on the Big Island... Wood Valley is where we choose to make our home. We don't want to LIVE in the high humidity of Hilo or blazing sun of Kona and it isn't too far to visit either at this location. It's great to come home to this mountain cabin after a long day of hiking Volcanoes National Park and exploring one of the most fascinating islands in the Pacific... Our Hawaii!!

Wonderful Stay

  • 5 of 5
It was charming, superb, and wonderful! We were amazed at how we had an entire property all to ourselves. The surrounding area was beautiful. Inside it was really clean and the kitchen was well stocked with cooking/serving materials. Not to far away from the black sand beach and the volcano. It was WAY better than any hotel! We would definitely recommend staying here.

Owner's Response: "it was WAY better than staying at a hotel" ... And more affordable... especially with all the amenities provided by home owners. Don't let the low rates confuse you... there are so many home owners offering incredible accommodations giving visitors the best competitive rates. Most home owners are not bringing in much more than it costs to maintain (like us) holding on to the dream of 'living' in paradise. Since it is their home away from home... they include many extras that hotels can't. It really is the best way to travel if you can find the right place for you. Our niche is offering the ultimate in seclusion and privacy for those who want to experience peace, tranquility, intimacy and romance. Our guests have been the most respectful heart felt people we could ask for to take care of Hale Aloha Aina while we are away. It has been a pleasure offering an affordable alternative so everyone can experience the rural country life of Hawaii and living off the grid.

Mahalo to all of our guests since 2001 for making Hale Aloha Aina so successful and for sending your friends and family our way! Many of our guests want to keep this place all to themselves, but we need your help to continue to offer this paradise for all! ALOHA!!

Exceptional getaway, great grounds and the hale was well equipped and decorated. I would suggested having a fan to move the quiet Ka'u air through the house instead of using the AC/generator.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay at Hale Aloha Aina! We would love to talk to you more about your suggestion on having a fan installed in the cottage. We will consider it on our next visit. There is no AC since we don't usually have those hot temperatures. We had an electric fan available but it rusted quickly and looked unsightly. It was removed and never replaced as it didn't get much use. If someone requests a fan we will provide it for them at check in. We did installed a propane fireplace for the cool winter mornings with a thermostat. It probably has an option for AC on the standard thermostat which you are probably referring to. Living off the grid does have it's challenges when you are providing accommodations for vacationers. Educating our guests how easy it is to live on solar and alternative energy has been very rewarding. The benefits out weight the smaller inconveniences and having a home that is totally self sufficient is very reassuring, especially in the tropics. No black outs here ;0) There is even a backup water source in case of emergencies. We can hardly wait to live there and make it our home... when the grandkids are a bit older ;0)

This place is outstanding! If you are looking for a private escape there is no place better than this. Situated at the base of a mountain and 5 minutes from a budist temple, there is no place quite like it. The grounds are immaculate and the cottage is modern. The owners are incredibly nice and genuinely care about your stay.

Seclusion and comfort - absolute perfection

  • 5 of 5
The listing description, photos and reviews for this property held such promise that we almost did not want to let our expectations get ahead of themselves. However, we were not disappointed and if anything, were even more impressed than we expected to be! The location is absolutely ideal if you are looking to just get away from it all, be able to enjoy the natural landscape of the island but still be reasonably well connected to some of the main sites. For us, it was a great combination and allowed us to enjoy many trips to Volcanoes National Park, Black Sand Beach, Green Sand Beach, Hilo for the Farmers' Market, while still being able to return every evening to a completely tranquil place that felt like we were miles from anyone. The cottage itself has been fitted out and kitted out thoughtfully, and an incredibly high standard of repair and cleanliness is maintained throughout. The kitchen is extremely well equipped, and the furniture in all rooms is both attractive and functional (and matching - not the usual mis-matched odds and ends you often find!). The bathroom was clean and there was a good shower. We made lots of use of the grill, and ate breakfast on the lanai each morning. We were often able eat and use fruit from the trees around the property which was a real treat! We also really appreciated the snorkel gear and beach towels.

All in all, I think staying in this gorgeous "hidden" abode really contributed to making our trip a memorable one. We would return without hesitation!

Many of our guests want to keep it all to themselves... but we need your referrals to continue offering this piece of Heaven for all! So Please Do!! From the Owner

This is where we want to spend the rest of our lives! Besides the breathtaking beauty of having your own garden of eaden...Having pure spring water on tap and rich volcanic soil at your feet is a rare commodity when you 'LIVE' on the BIG Island. Missy was raised on the Big Island and knows the struggle with having to deal with water catchment and cleared land without any soil. The climate at 2500 elevation is very comfortable for us having lived in the NW. It's not too Hot and it's not too cold... it's just RIGHT!
