House, 4 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-10) - Very close to town...

If you are adventurous and free spirited, but still require all the amenities a luxury rental home has to offer then Pu`uhonua ('Place of Refuge') is the place for you. Experience tropical Hawaii at it’s finest in this unique pole house nestled just above Kealakekua Bay ('Pathway of the Gods') in Captain Cook, Hawaii. At this elevation you will enjoy the perfect climate and sweeping 180+ degree views of the ocean, Mauna Loa and Kealakekua Bay, in a quiet and comfortable setting.

Convenient location, just a moment away from the town of Captain Cook, with all of its amenities including one of the islands best grocery stores, fantastic restaurants, local shops and a wonderful farmers market.

Watch breathtaking sunsets from the spacious upper lanai that wraps around the house. Just 20 miles south of Kailua-Kona Airport, Pu`uhonua House is minutes from an array of activities including horseback riding, hiking, tennis, diving, dolphin and seasonal whale watching. Rent kayaks and kayak across the majestic Kealakekua Bay, swim with spinner dolphins and snorkel one of Hawaii’s best kept secrets, the Captain Cook monument.

Enjoy a variety of tropical fruits and flora grown on the property such as bananas, papayas, lemons, avocados, breadfruit, macadamia, coffee and mangos. We are close to some of south Kona’s finest beaches and minutes from great swimming, snorkeling and child safe beaches like Hookena, Manini, Keei, and Kealakekua Bay.

Pu`uhonua House (Place of Refuge House) was built in 1988 by a physicist and his wife. As a former sailor he and his wife had traveled to many parts of the world, before they chose this spot to build their dream home where they would eventually retire. Being a physicist he was intrigued by the simplicity and structural durability a pole house has to offer. Supported by nine thirty foot tall cedar poles imported from Washington state, this house unlike traditionally constructed homes, has a more open floor plan allowing for more glass. The main living level perimeter is nearly all glass/view. You feel as though you are part of your beautiful surroundings. All of the structural and finish components of the house were all hand crafted on site. The property is a one acre private parcel located in the McCoy Plantation subdivision, once a coffee plantation. Much of the property is still rich with coffee plants and certain times of the year the air is thick with the sweet scent of the blossom. If you like peace and tranquility then you will enjoy this piece of paradise.

About the Owner

Aloha. My Name is Rowan. My mother and father, Bruce & Nikki, fell in love with this very special piece of paradise. It is a unique Hawaiin style home on a very peaceful private 1 acre lot in the town of Captain Cook.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My Family and I have stayed in many vacation rentals over the years, and Pu'uhonua House is by far the most beautiful Hawaiian style home we have ever stayed in. Not only is the house awesome the property is equally as breath-taking. We were spoiled with fresh fruit and flowers from the property. We applaud the attention to detail, the level of cleanliness and the thought that went into making this the 5 star experience that it is. We will be back!!!

Completely beautiful blend of secluded getaway and access to amenities and activities. The house and grounds are supremely well cared for and offer gorgeous panoramic views, plenty of space and nice quiet spots to relax while also providing all the creature comforts. The location has the flavor and feel of the "real" Hawaii but is just minutes from anything you might need and a variety of things to do. Four bedrooms plus a loft meant plenty of room for our extended family of six (three adult couples). We could not have been more pleased. One of my favorite moments was each morning, with fresh coffee brewing, stepping out into the morning and watching the coastline come alive as the sun came up over the mountain behind. Beautiful, lifetime memories. Would go back in an instant and would highly recommend.

Beautiful!! The house was very easy to find and was gorgeous. There are 4 bedrooms and one loft. Be advised, one of the bedrooms is kind of secluded outside- still connected to the house, but almost like a sunroom. We had an adult throw a temper tantrum when he ended up "outside." Every room has a balcony and view, but the main view is from the living/family room. It was so nice to watch the sunset. The owners are super nice. They happened to be there to show us all of the ins and outs of the house and help with the wifi. They also brought us plenty of fresh fruit grown on the grounds and a sample of the coffee. The drive way is very steep, you have to just hit the gas, not be afraid, and go! We had alot of fun doing just this haha. Over all, had a wonderful stay. The house was very big and beautiful. Thank you. Hope we can come back and stay some day.

Exceeded Our Expectations!

I am originally from Oahu and now live on the Mainland and found Pu'uhonua to be such a special place. It was even better than I imagined, which I was pleasantly surprised about! More than just the beauty of the house and location, there is a sense of being immersed in the spirit of aloha. And even though you feel far removed from civilization, modern conveniences are very close which is nice. Bruce and Nikki were very gracious and shared some of the fruits grown on the property itself and Nikki offers wonderful spa treatments in natural surroundings next door!

Pu'uhonua House

Pu'uhonua House

Pu'uhonua House - Place of Refuge has a special place in our hearts. You cannot spend a day here without being touched by the beauty surrounding this amazing place. The house literally springs up out of a lush green rain forest of flowers, coffee and many various fruit trees. At the top level of the house you are looking down on the forest and out on the ocean, or over to the mountains. The sunsets are breathtaking.
Close by, is town, beaches, snorkeling, hiking, restaurants, and shopping. No shortage of things to do.
The house is very well maintained and the owners are nearby and extremely helpful with any needs. I would definitely recommend this house to anyone who does not mind climbing stairs and loves a great view!

Breathtaking Views

  • 5 of 5
Since our return from Hawaii, a day does not pass that the view from the Pu'uhonua House‏ is not remembered. The “treehouse” as the children affectionately named it provided landscaped grounds with Hawaiian plants, coconuts, pineapples, coffee, and papayas for all to investigate. Indoors the pole house provided a variety of sleeping arrangements including separate bedrooms and a loft and was plenty big enough for our family of five. The Pu'uhonua House‏ is centrally located so that there is driving access to a variety of sites and activities including beaches, snorkeling, boats, surfing and historic landmarks. The house grill is more than adequate to cook a fine steak to end the day and then begin the evening with a beautiful sunset and speckled lights accenting the valley below. The owners were wonderful to work with and responded to any emails or questions quickly. We highly recommend the Pu'uhonua House!

Perfect House in Captain Cook

  • 5 of 5
If you are wondering whether this is the right house for your Big Island vacation, the answer is YES. It's spacious, very clean, beautifully decorated and with decks on all sides it's easy to find your patch of shade. The kitchen has everything you'd ever need. The house is close to so many fun things to do on the island and is a bit removed from the touristy areas north of Kona. We particularly enjoyed snorkeling at Two Step, the drive to South Point and, of course, the Kona Brewing Company. Also, the Poke Shake just opened a new location close to Pu'uhonau House, the best poke on the island. We stopped in every evening and got a pint for cocktails, delish! We had a total of 4 adults and 4 kids ranging in age from 8 to 13 and the house was just perfect for our group. The house's owners were really nice and made sure that we had everything we needed. The next time we are on the big island, we'll be staying at Pu'uhonua House!
