House, 3 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 9)

If you are looking for an authentic, awesome jungle experience, consider La Patita de Manzanillo. Bathe in the beauty of nature in the open design kitchen/dining area with its native hardwood tables and benches. Sway in the hammocks while you nap or read a book. Walk to nearby, beautiful beaches and to snorkeling.

Enjoy meals in the fully-equipped kitchen (we will also arrange for someone to come and cook for you for part or all of your stay if you like) and sleep well in comfortable, posturpedic beds. Practice yoga on our specially designed Yoga platform. Sip coffee on the deck as you see the light change in the morning, and relax deeply in the peacefulness and quiet of night. The house is yours, but you will share your jungle space with howler monkeys, sloths, and toucans, and swim in the crystal clear water of the nearly deserted beach.

Our house comfortably sleeps nine. There are two bedrooms and two decks downstairs, as well as a large, tiled bathroom with hot water. Enjoy hammocks to swing in, and comfortable benches to sit on. Both downstairs bedrooms open onto the deck, and there is a larger deck off of the kitchen/dining area that is perfect for swinging in hammocks, watching the howler monkeys and enjoying the butterflies and native plants and trees.

The upstairs bedroom has its own half bath, and there are jungle views from three sides. It is very spacious and airy, and also has a specially designed yoga platform on the deck right outside the entrance. It is a wonderful spot for morning and afternoon yoga practice and meditation, as well as tea sipping and watching the colors change throughout the day.

La Patita in Manzanillo is AMAZING & was the perfect place for me! It is as local & jungley as it gets, yet only a short distance to more touristy & bustling towns, like Puerto Viejo. The nearby beach is, in fact, nearly deserted, & the paths getting there are full of monkeys, sloths, blue crabs, heliconia, ginger, butterflies, palm trees, & more. The open air design & natural woods throughout the home were just gorgeous, & the multiple hammocks were useful in this tranquilo spot :) The howler monkeys were like nothing I've ever heard before & I loved being in the jungle! William took me horseback riding through the beach & jungle & we saw all kinds of animals & lush landscape. He & Dania were very welcoming & went out of their way for me. I ate at El Refugio & Arricife in Punta Uva & both were Soooo yummy! I rafted the Pacuare & loved that, surfed at Playa Negra, zip lined at Almonds & Corals, & swam in Manzanillo. I used La Patita's bikes & rode them around town. I used the well-equipped kitchen, loved the comfy bed, & enjoyed hot showers, which are hard to find in CR. There's even an outdoor shower for those beach feet! The accomodations & surrounding jungle/yard at La Patita were beyond what I expected, & I feel very honored to have spent one of the best weeks of my life there. The owners, Tom & Sita, are exceptional people & their home reflects this. Pura Vida!

Rainforest retreat in a fascinating area

  • 5 of 5
We loved our stay at La Patita. The house is amazing---open to the lush rainforest, yet kind of cozy and funky-- like living in a treehouse. We could lie in a hammock on the deck and spot sloths, howler monkeys, and toucans. Our hike through the Refuge with Omar was a highlight. He was a great guide--a font of knowledge on all things local. William, the caretaker was also friendly and accommodating. China, (a cook who lives in Manzanillo) came to La Patita to prepare a dinner for us one night. She is a native English speaker like all the older folks in the area, many of whom are descendants of workers who came from Jamaica to build the railroad, and work in the banana plantations. Fascinating history of this place. We loved hanging out and walking on the gorgeous beaches. Just be sure to find out where the rip tides make swimming dangerous. Good food to be had at Cool and Calm Cafe. Thank you, Sita for helping us get in touch with China and with Omar. Meeting local people made our fantastic week even better!

Owner's Response: I am really happy you enjoyed the house and the other wonderful things the area has to offer. Yes, the beaches are awesome and it's very important to be mindful of the rip tides. And you make me want to be there for China's cooking tonight, and to go on a trip led by Omar!!

La Patita - Manzanillo Costa Rica

Unfortunately, I have to give a poor review. On the day of our arrival, there was no one at the house to give any kind of instruction. I had to go to town to ask where the caretaker, William was. Luckily, some of us stayed behind just in case he showed up. He did. There was little information given to us about what we should expect during our stay. The washer ruined some of our clothes, because of the rotted out tub. We had no instruction as to how to start propane tank for cooking. We could not figure it out. Downstairs toilet kept stopping up, even when no paper was put in it. In my opinion, the house was poorly maintained. Sheets were paper thin, towels very raggedy. And we were told that there would be beach towels. NOT TRUE! We ended up buying them. Light bulbs were out. At night,it was so dark, there should have been some kind of motion sensor that would go on so we could see our way to the house. One night I was I was stung by thousands of black ants while unloading the trunk of the car. Had there been some kind of light at night, we would have noticed the ANTS! Instructions to the house must be very old, because there was no "washboard road" for 15 miles , but rather a paved one. That was good. I would not use this house again.

Owner's Response: Dear Rachel,

I am so sorry for your negative experience. It seems that our caretakers have in fact not been taking care! I regret that we are finding out about it in this fashion. We have an average of five stars for all our twenty reviews, and I want to keep things that way. I will take care of the things you mentioned and am sorry you won't be there to have a better experience! Thanks for letting me know!!

I hope there were some wonderful times on the beautiful beaches and great restaurants to help make up for the problems you encountered.

All the best, Sita

Great, laid back family get-away near the beach

We had a great time - families with small children beware the limited railing, otherwise could not have asked for more. Very nice trail down to the beach, or very easy ~10-15 minute walk to Manzanillo.

Thanks for accommodating our stay in Manzanillo. We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend this option for a family who wants to be off the beaten path and hang out in hammocks while listening to howler monkeys and watching toucans. There are some amazing restaurants between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo (try La Pecora Nera for some outstanding Italian food!). Thanks again to William (the caretaker) and Tom/Sita for being so helpful. We'll be dreaming about the tranquility of La Patita for some time.

Owner's Response: I am so glad you folks had a good time!! I was just going to e-mail and check. We were camping during your stay (and it was cold!), so I am happy to hear that it was all you had hoped.

Thanks much for writing your review and now you make me want to swing in a hammock and especially get in warm water!!!! Sita

Luxury camping in a beautiful part of the world

  • 4 of 5
My new husband and I just got home from spending our month-long honeymoon at La Patita, and we had a wonderful time! I read another review of the house that characterized it as "luxury camping" and that seems exactly right to me. :)

The house is absolutely gorgeous -- like many buildings in this part of Costa Rica, the common areas are open to the air, which we LOVED. Nothing like sitting under a sturdy roof drinking a cup of tea watching the jungle waking up, or the rain coming down!

The location of the house is wonderful, as well. Manzanillo is a short walk or bike ride away, and the beach there seems to go on forever. You must go snorkeling! Absolutely beautiful! We also brought travel hammocks, and I found myself stringing mine up on the beach almost every day, just to hang out and watch the waves come in.

We really appreciated having bikes to use at La Patita; it was very easy and fun to explore the surrounding areas (Punta Uva, Playa Chiquita, Cocles, Puerto Viejo). We didn't have a car, but had no problems getting everywhere we wanted to go via bike, bus, or taxi.

As newbie travellers to Costa Rca, there were a few things about our trip that we weren't expecting (folks with more experience in CR will already be aware but we thought it worth mentioning). First, there is warm water available for showering, but there is no hot water in the kitchen -- just heat water on the stove when it's time to wash up after dinner. Also, the well water that serves the house is not good for drinking or cooking -- you'll need to purchase water for that.

Overall, we found the house to be well-appointed -- the kitchen has everything you need to cook great meals, there are plenty of towels and bed linens, and the beds have mosquito nets. We personally didn't find the beds to be the comfiest we've slept in but we slept well nonetheless. The nighttime sounds of the jungle are the perfect lullaby!

Overall, we loved our stay, and we loved the happy and relaxed vibe of the Caribbean coast. The weather was beautiful, the wildlife was stunning, and our caretakers (William and Dannia) were simply lovely people who made us feel most welcome and cared for. La Patita is a great home base for exploring the beaches and the jungle as well as a beautiful place to hang out and relax and watch the monkeys and toucans and hummingbirds and sloths go by. I'd characterize us as "slightly adventurous but not super hard core travelers" and it was perfect for us!
