1 Bedroom, 1.0 Bathroom with private 2nd outdoor shower, Sleeps 4

Nestled in a garden setting, sharing the swimming pool and Rancho with Casa Papaya - also available for rental. Overlooking the Pacific, its just a 10 minute walk to one Costa Rica's best beaches.

We're close to Sámara (2 km) but not too close. That means less noise - especially in the evenings - and more privacy. Off the beach means fewer bugs and cooler temperatures. You're much closer to the nature you want to see.

Casa Mango was designed for comfort in the tropics, with a private shaded terrace and air conditioning inside. Sea breezes keep the house cool during the day. Views of the Pacific from every room. Paddle fans throughout. All windows screened. Private outdoor shower just off pool plus a full bath. Bedroom with double pillow top mattress. Living room with double sofa/futon. Save money and cook at home in the fully equipped kitchen. Owner's live in their own home on the property year around to assist in any way possible.

Sámara's reef-protected bay provides safe swimming and snorkeling. Learn to surf at ne of 4 surf schools right in the bay and world-class waves nearby. There is abundant wildlife in the trees around the house. Wake up to the roar of the Howler monkeys or the call of the green parrots as they make their twice daily pass to nesting sites up the hill. There is a zipline canopy tour nearby. Best birding in the area is from the terrace at dawn

Samara has shops, post office, police station, groceries, internet cafes, doctor, pharmacy, many good restaurants, and 'sodas' (Tico for cafe). The beach is quiet and gorgeous. It is nearly empty most of the week, except in the mornings when the children walk to school.

Casa Mango shares a 'get cool' pool and a spacious covered rancho with Casa Papaya, also available for vacation rental. Up the hill is Casa Gecko the owners home. Reserve one or two houses for an unforgettable tropical gathering.

Sámara is a tropical jewel. Casa Mango is well located away from the downtown noise in a mixed international/Tico neighborhood along a paved road. The evenings are quiet and serene, with amazing star shows and the sounds of night animals. Dawn approaches with visits from monkeys, parrots, other wildlife and maybe a neighborhood rooster. Daytime includes the occasional motorbike or truck.

For more photos and floor plans, send an inquiry via email. We have lots more information to offer: about the house, the area, the weather, what to bring etc.

About the Owner

When we'd had enough of grey Seattle, we quit our day jobs (architect and graphic designer) and moved to Costa Rica, where we've been happily living the Pura Vida since 2006. We love the climate and beauty of this tropical environment. We love the culture and the people here. We love the rhythm of life. And we love to share it.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Gracias a todo! Casa mango was great. We spent one week here while taking Spanish clases in Carrillo. We enjoyed visiting with our hosts, Steve and Lavae. They were great! We like the architecture of Mango and Papaya – the colors are great. Wonderful mornings having coffee on the deck and sunsets overlooking the ocean were terrific too!

We are off to Carrillo for one week for more Spanish, a river tour with Popo’s and perhaps turtles too. This afternoon at low tide we are heading out to the island in sea kayaks with Christian our guide form the little shop down the hill (Tico Tours). From here to Osa Penninsula (our next adventure). Saludos & Pura Vida!

Nice place to stay

  • 3 of 5
Casa Mango is a comfortable house, and it's a great if you're traveling on a budget. The house was pretty clean and relatively well-maintained, but there was some wear and tear. The house is in a safe location, and the owners clearly care about making sure you have a safe and enjoyable time in Samara. They provided a ton of very helpful information about Samara and tips for traveling in Costa Rica. While you could walk to the main town of Samara and the beach, I would imagine it would be a 20-30 minute walk. The house is located up a pretty steep hill, so I would recommend having a car if you're staying here.

Casa Mango in Samara, Costa Rica

  • 4 of 5
My partner and I really enjoyed our stay at Casa Mango. We were there during 3 weeks of high season and for the price I feel we really got a great deal. Accomadations were clean, safe and private. A plus was private location, bike ride to beach or town, and the pool for cooling off. We wanted to live like locals and experience Samara in an intimate way, no posh hotels for us. Really enjoyed our stay and Lavae was most helpful in making sure we had what we needed. If you want a reasonable price, gorgeous view, and some privacy, very family friendly, and quiet, then this is your place! Thanks Lavae and Steve, can't wait to come back!

We LOVED Casa Mango!

  • 5 of 5
My 2 college aged daughters & I rented Casa Mango for a week in Samara. The girls studied at Intercultura. We loved our little cottage. It was a beautiful view and so peaceful. The locked gate added a sense of security, although Samara itself seems pretty tranquila.

Location: We had a rental car, so it was a quick 5 minute drive to the school. However, one of my daughters loves to walk, so she often chose to walk rather than ride. It took her about 15-20 minutes to liesurely walk between the cottage and the school along the beach. Sunday morning we visited a church in town & chose to walk rather than drive. Walking was fun because of the wildlife - we saw monkeys playing in the trees, iguanas, butterflies, hummingbirds, other birds, etc. It was beautiful!

Cottage: It was charming. A few bugs, yes, but as someone already commented, I don't think Costa Rica is the place to come if you are bothered by a few insects. I sprayed bug spray along the door jams and that seemed to curtail them a bit. We enjoyed having our little kitchen to cook breakfast & the refrigerator out on the veranda seemed new. We bought ice, milk, fresh fruit, & yogurt & made smoothies with the blender provided. It was nice to have a few beach items available & towels provided. Francini, our cleaning lady, was delightful & very helpful with info about local things - where to buy the best produce, how much to pay for boogie boards, etc. I slept on the futon, & didn't find it too uncomfortable. We would use the AC for awhile & then turn it off of a night. With the fans running, we stayed plenty cool.

Owners: Lavae & Steve were very helpful - just the right amount of interaction... not intrusive, but not aloof either. There were lots of helpful little notes & instructions posted, but if we needed something (like an iron) we just asked and they provided. The basket of treats was a nice touch - just enough coffee to last the week. :) My girls loved the cookies! (we had to buy more)

Samara: This place was beautiful. We learned to eat later than we were accustomed to because if you are not into the party scene, it's hard to know what to "do" after dinner. We filled up our afternoons with Stand Up Paddling & Horseback riding along the beach, but evenings we had to be a bit creative - like watching the Spurs & Heat playoffs at Lo Q Hay.

All in all, this was an amazing vacation & learning experience for the three of us. Great mother/daughter times.

Casa mango und Casa Papaya

  • 5 of 5

Casa Mango

  • 3 of 5
The location, is accurate, there is quite a hill when returning from the beach. The owners were helpful when asked. I felt the property was poorly maintained and was not clean, however the clean linen every few days was lovely. The futton was very uncomfortable. The fridges in Casa Mango and the ranchero did not work well, so very difficult if you were wanting to freeze something or to make ice. I would not recommend Casa Mango unless I could fully prepare them on what to expect.

From the Owner

We fell in love with Costa Rica the first time we vacationed here - the climate, the environment, the people. After touring much of the country, we settled on a gem of a lot with expansive ocean views. We liked being near the town of Sámara, where there are more services available each year. But we like being away from the noise and late night activity. We love the Howler monkeys that visit frequently to feast on the mango trees next door.

Just above one of the prettiest white sand beaches in Costa Rica, Casa Mango enjoys air conditioning as well as cooling ocean breezes and terrific Pacific ocean views. Pristine, and less developed than many northern Guanacaste resort towns, Sámara provides a more laid back and romantic atmosphere. It is not only a charming beach village, with a wide choice of restaurants and activities, but it is also a thriving fishing and farming community. Fishing boats return to the harbor at sunset. Cattle and horses wander the wooded trails. Children walk to school along the beach in their crisp uniforms. Sámara is surrounded by world-class surfing beaches, many almost deserted. Sámara Bay is protected by a reef and island and so provides safe swimming and beginning surfing with 4 surf schools. Local guides offer tours for dolphin & whale watching, active volcanoes, sailing, fishing, snorkeling, rafting and kayaking, zip-line canopy tour. Get involved with turtle nesting at Playa Buena Vista and Playa Camoronal

Other Activities: zip-line canopy tour, surfing, boating, wildlife viewing, kayaking, horseback riding, nature walk, snorkling, swimming, beachcombing, helicopoter rides, hiking

From the Owner

Within walking distance to the beach - we do it every morning with our rescued dog - our houses sit on the hillside overlooking Sámara Bay. There aren't too many houses around where you can have both proximity and privacy. Close enough to head in for a night of reggae or cocktails on the beach. But on quiet mornings, the best bird-watching happens from your terrace. Fresh ocean breezes keep the houses bug-free and cool although we've recently added AC.
