About the Owner

Took a few years off to sail across the Pacific Ocean on a 29' sailboat. Saw gorgeous beaches all along the way: from San Diego south to Cabo San Lucas (Mexico), to the Marquesas and westward to the Great Barrier Reef. So many beautiful beaches, but I choose to settle in Waimanalo because, well, honestly, the blue of the ocean and the incredible beauty of this island takes my breath away each and every day.

(5-Star Review as posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo)

Waimanalo is a great place to unwind and relax, only a short stroll to uncrowded Waimanalo Beach and great cafes and restaurants (esp. Sweet Home Waimanalo!) Bus stop is very close with buses frequently heading into Kailua and down to Makapuu. Hosts are extremely welcoming and the rooms, which are clean well designed, contain everything required for a perfect getaway.

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5
I could not imagine staying in beautiful tropical Hawaii in a hotel or high rise. This wonderful B & B is set in a lovely tropical garden which is a great place to bird watch. Since it is 3 houses from the beach, you can enjoy your jet lag by greeting the sunrise on a perfect sand beach with few visitors and a great view.

The reviews before mine have said it all, great garden, wonderful spacious rooms as pictured, supplies laid in, kitchen and outdoor barbecue set up and a warm host who feels like a friend immediately. Making my own breakfast was a plus for me with my gluten free diet. I've been to many, many B & B's and this one is at the top of my list of favorites

PARADISE FOUND RIGHT HERE AT HALE NALO

  • 5 of 5
This neat and tidy studio is the perfect place to relax, after a wounderful day on the nicest, and quietest beach in all of Oahu. Herlinda and her friendly dog helped to make our anniversary a week of happiness in paradise. Wakeing to the sound of the surf and birds singing in the AM is awesome, enjoying a cool drink in the beautiful back yard at sunset, life doesn't get any better then that. All the things you need for a great vacation are at your disposal, the pictures don't lie. We would not hesitate to come back to Hale Nalo paradise found. Marty & Millie.

Absolutely Perfect!...

Absolutely Perfect!...

What a wonderful place to stay! The accommodations were very charming and had all the conveniences of home to include a very comfortable bed, great bathroom facilities and an added plus (and unlike some major hotels) the entire place was exceptionally well maintained and clean. In addition, there were amenities that I didn’t expect to be provided for a great beach outing such as big fluffy beach towels, coolers, boogie boards, snorkel gear etc.

Most importantly, Herlinda, our hostess who is the owner of Hale Nalo, along with the caretaker, Wayne were the best of hostesses we’ve ever had and greeted us with a warm and friendly “Aloha” upon our arrival. With this being our first visit to Hawaii, Herlinda was very generous and shared with us some of the native fruit, which we had never tasted, in order to insure we had and authentic Hawaiian experience. It was delicious! This is a great place to stay and we will definitely be back!

Thank you for the great accommodations, friendly service and for making our vacation one of the most memorable we have ever had!

Great experience

  • 5 of 5
Hale’Nalo was a perfect place for our stay at Waimanalo. The owners were great hosts, very friendly and available at any time, we needed them - f.e. we had locked our studio – key inside :/ Especially the Lilikoi-testing we really enjoyed and it always will stay in our mind! We enjoyed having breakfast in the nice tropical garden and the way to the beach are a few steps only. The studio itself is very comfortable, spacious and equipped with all items you need for a perfect vacation. So we can warmly recommend Hale’Nalo to anyone, and we are very thankful, that we found this lovely property!

Great escape!

  • 5 of 5
On Oahu, Waimanalo has the best beach and it is only two doors down from this restful retreat. The very calm, quiet and serene residential neighborhood is perfect for those looking for a true Hawaiian experience without all the tourist traps. We thoroughly enjoyed the quite residence, sounds of the ocean, and waking up to the beauty and sounds Waimanalo.
The owner greeted us upon arrival, provided areas of interest, and was incredibly helpful when my husband locked the keys in the car in the driveway.
Definitely would return!

Owner's Response: It was our great pleasure hosting your stay. Not only did we enjoy you, but Sophie (our sweet girl pooch) couldn't keep herself from you. We're glad you found a friend in her. As for the keys...we're just glad you made your flight. Well - sort of! With aloha, HN

Nice, but could be better.

  • 3 of 5
My husband & I recently stayed here. Herlinda was a very nice host, & very welcoming. Hale Nalo was a great location;close to the beaches and not far from restuarants/shops. It was located in a quiet neighborhood, and very serene.

While we loved the location, there are a few things that could be improved. These suggestions are based on our personal preferences & think it would be helpful for future guests.

We felt the bed was very hard & uncomfortable. I have a bad back & my pain greatly increased the next day after sleeping on the bed. We knew we wouldn't be able to enjoy our trip if the bed issue wasn't addressed, so we bought a foam bed topper while there. After it was added it was a Huge Improvement. When we left we gave it to our friends we were visiting but suggest adding something as simple as a foam bed topper(Target ($150) where we purchased it).It would greatly improve the bed. It made a huge difference for us and I'm sure it would be much more comfortable for those staying there.

There is no a/c and we felt it was very hot at night. Leaving the windows and doors open wasn't much reprieve. It was often sticky in the room from the humidity.I can't imagine staying here during summers when it's really hot out. People may be really uncomfortable sleeping if they can't get cool at night. We suggest adding an a/c, it probably would only be run at night & appliances have come a long way in being more efficient & cost effective. It would be nice for people to have an option if the heat is difficult for them.

The bathroom got really steamy & would spill into the room once the door was open, making it more sticky and muggy. A simple solution is to add an exhaust fan to the bathroom. The bathroom took forever to air out & the mirror to defog; an exhaust fan would help w/moisture & keep mold problems at bay. It would also be nice to not smell the toilet business in the bedroom.

The t.v. was small, & it wasn't until the last day there we figured out what channel had a list of all the shows. Having a list readily available for guests would be helpful. We had some ant problems even with keeping our food sealed tightly. Ant traps would be a good idea. Adding a little rug on each side of the bed to wipe your feet on would help in keeping sand out of the bed. As hard as you try to not drag it in, it still happens.

Most are simple fixes that go a long way in keeping guests happy. Hopefully future guests will have it better off than we did.

Owner's Response: We know how difficult it is to find a comfortable bed when suffering from a "bad back". Another guest (also with a bad back) said the very same bed was too soft! We provide very high quality mattresses that most guests find very comfortable; and regret your discomfort. Re: A/C: because our property is fully solar powered, we do not offer a/c. It does get warm, particularly at night during the summer. Our guests will prefer to fall sleep listening to the ocean and waking to the sound of birds singing. (Readers: if you "need' a/c, don't chance it: book elsewhere.) Re: ants: our Garden Suites are situated in lush tropical gardens. We have routine pest control, however, sometimes a few ants sneak in. Re: your other suggestions, thank you! We'll look into them. Aloha! HN
