About the Owner

We are 30 somethings who live full time in Hood River, Oregon. We are self employed and run a small video production company and run kids adventure camps in the Columbia Gorge. When we aren't working we take our daughter to the beach where we unwind, surf and eat cinnamon buns at Bread and Ocean. We feel fortunate to live and vacation in such beautiful places. While in Hood River we grow our own food, run our cars on vegetable oil and do what we can to live a simpler life.

Beyond amazing :)

Got much more than we bargained for! Amazing price and location! Not familiar with the area and suprised how close to the beach we were! The patio was perfect for enjoying and very private! The best part was the awesome 6 ft bean bag chair that was so comfy! Definitely can't wait to bring the kids up to enjoy this place seeing as it would be perfect with the cute little picnic table that sits outside!

Fun place

  • of 5
My friends and I very much enjoyed our stay at this home. Very cozy and fun design. Small issue with refrigerator not getting very cold but this wasn't too bad as we could store food in freezer instead. Our favorite aspect was the open living room floor plan which was very comfortable and provide great social atmosphere.

Owner's Response: I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. About the refrigerator, someone had turned the setting down so that's why it wasn't cold. There is a dial inside the fridge and one in the freezer that controls the temperature. We hope to have you back again soon!

Fun weekend getaway

  • 4 of 5
Was glad to stay here for a weekend while in town for a wedding in Manzanita. The home was clean, conveniently located (although not really walkable to town/beach) and for us out-of-towners very "Oregon-ey". The home is basically one great room/kitchen upstairs with 2 bedrooms and the bathroom down stairs. A nice deck wraps around about half of the upper level. The place is not in pristine condition but this was not a problem for our group as it was still clean and comfortable. (i consider my wife picky and she was pleased here). For the price I paid l felt it was a fair value. We did have some drips from condensation from the ceiling as is mentioned in at least one other review but no harm done... Just don't leave a laptop on the counter or anything. No wifi but surprisingly to me had fine cell reception the whole time. I would stay here again. Highly recommend hike up the Neahkahnie mt. trail if you're up for it, and bread and ocean in Manzanita.

Manzanita is a great get-away

  • of 5
The beginning of our stay was a bit rough due to a couple of scheduling mistakes. However, the owners were very willing to make things right. The unique layout of the cabin was a real appeal to both us adults and our children. Its quiet location was also a plus. We would certainly stay here again.

Wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5
My kids and I absolutely LOVED this place. The house is very unique and we loved the open floor plan. The location is great and allowed for fun day trips to the Tillamook and Cannon Beach area, then relaxing dinners and sunset watching in Manzanita at night. The only thing I would change would be to have curtains on all the windows in the main room to close at night as this was a bit disconcerting for me traveling alone with my kids, but to be fair, the house is surrounded by trees and private, and I think it’s my own paranoia. :) Wifi would have been a plus, but we found it 5 minutes away at the library. We definitely would love to stay here again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review Jennifer. We purposefully have not had wifi hooked up because our family needs a retreat place from technology. I'm glad you found it at the Library. It's free and easy to pick up in the parking lot all hours of the day.

Care and attention needed

  • 3 of 5
As apparent from the pictures, the house is unusual and attractive. It is comfortable, but needs care and attention. The ad says "on cold days relax in front of the gas fireplace," but the fireplace is not working. The ad promised the opportunity to use the BBQ grill on the deck, but the grill is rusty and filthy. Of the three chairs on the deck, two are broken and one is very uncomfortable. The kitchen lacked basic supplies: coffee filters, a wine opener, plastic wrap and foil, a complete set of measuring cups and measuring spoons, ice trays that do not leak, salt and pepper. The bathroom had liquid hand soap, but no face or shower soap. There is no hair dryer. We were not advised in advance that we needed to bring any of these things with us. Visitors arriving by plane for a short stay should not be expected to purchase these basic items. There is a broom, but no dustpan for sweeping up sand. The only light for the kitchen area is the overhead fan, which is not sufficient for cooking. It would be helpful to have instructions for the coffee maker and DVD player. It would also be helpful to have a night table in the master bedroom for books and glasses.
All of these items can be addressed to make the house a really wonderful place to stay in Manzanita. I hope the owners will take the time to do so.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback! It is true that the fireplace is out of commission right now and is scheduled for replacement this fall. We apologize for any inconvenience that caused. A list of items included in the rental and not included in the rental including the mention of no hairdryer, food items, etc was listed in the rental agreement that renters approves when booking the house. We regret that sometimes items are removed from the home or disappear like wine openers, measuring items, dust pans, etc. We will replace them right away and appreciate your bringing their disappearance to our attention. As for the lack of night stands, the home is a unique design and night stands won't fit next to a queen bed in the non traditional shape of the room.
Thank you again for your thoughtful review! We have updated information on the Home Away website to make the app feature more informative and hopefully this will help some of the issues you brought up.

AS OF NOV 2014 THE FIREPLACE IS REPAIRED AND WORKING!

Location

From the Owner

We had a dream to own a log cabin one day. When we moved to Oregon the log cabin dream turned into a tree house dream which turned into a yurt on the Oregon coast dream. We didn't plan on buying a house but when we saw our cabin we knew this was the place for us. It was a log cabin, treehouse, yurt all in one! We love the relaxed environment of the Manzanita area and prefer it to the more touristy areas on the coast.

Amenities

From the Owner

We enjoy cooking big breakfasts in the cozy main room and taking morning runs on the Alder Creek Farm trail. Other mornings we'll go to Bread and Ocean for a tasty morning treat and head to Neahkanie Mountain to see what kind of mood the ocean is in. We love day trips down to Oswald West Park where we haul our daughter, our surfboards and snacks for a day at the beach. Oswald is our favorite beach to enjoy with our family. In the evenings we BBQ on the deck at the house and cuddle in front of the fire while we play games and read. We leave the cabin fully restored, rested and grateful.
