About the Owner

My husband Dave is a Pennsylvanian, and I met him in 1982 when I came from Florida to work with the teenagers at his church for a summer. We married the next year, and have two children who are now grown. Dave is a Princeton University and Southern Seminary grad, and is currently the executive director of our state convention. I am a graduate of Jacksonville University and now have a career I am passionate about teaching students at our local community college. We both hope to retire in a few years and do more traveling, using HomeAway and VRBO to find our accommodations, of course!

Our daughter Lauren is a surgical Physician's Assistant in Alabama, and a graduate of Princeton and Emory Universities. She is an accomplished violinist and an outstanding rugby player at all of 110 pounds. Jonathan is a Business graduate of The College of New Jersey where he was a Bonner Scholar and a swimmer, and after working very successfully in business for a couple of years after graduation, he has taken a year off to travel abroad extensively.

Wonderful getaway

  • 5 of 5
Our extended family vacationed her in August 2014 and enjoyed our stay. The house was charming, clean and well-equipped and the yard was spectacular. We enjoyed kayaking on the river, swimming and fishing. Our day trips included Hershey Park and Gettysburg, and everyone had a great time. The homeowners actually were staying next door that week and were incredibly welcoming and helpful without in any way being obtrusive. I would definitely recommend staying at this house!

Great Holiday Stay!

The home is absolutely beautiful along the lake. It was everything we could have wished for in a home away from home.

We even had fun fishing during the winter season and caught a 22 inch brown Bass at sunset!

The home owners are so nice and helpful made the stay even better.

Thanks for an amazing vacation. We will have to come back another time.

Incomparable views and lovely surroundings...

Our stay in the river front home in Dauphin, PA was everything we could have wanted and more! David and Janice are wonderful hosts and terrific people. We chose this location to hold a reunion of college roommates almost 30 years after graduation. The house was roomy - the sun porch was our favorite spot to gather - the beds and bedrooms were comfy, the requisite firepit was perfect right at riverside, and the local residents were as nice and welcoming as could be! We'll be staying at the River House again, rest assured. We want to have a crack at those kayaks next time!

Best Vacation Ever

  • 5 of 5
Probably the best family vacation we have had. The house was beautiful and the view on the River was beyond gorgeous!! We loved sitting in the sun room every morning with our coffee. The first morning I actually sat on the swing outside and watched my son and husband in the kayaks. What a way to start off a vacation.
We were within driving distance to so many exciting activities. We enjoyed Hershey, Gettysburg, and Lancaster. We even went back to Hershey to spend the day at the outlet mall.
I would definitely recommend this house to anyone wanting to vacation in the dutch country. We will be back...Soon I hope!!

Perfect River Getaway :)

  • 5 of 5
We had a great time the four days and three nights we visited. The owners were more than helpful during our stay. They really went above and beyond our expectations. We had everything we needed to make smores on the counter when we arrived. Thank you Janice! The house was clean and just as described. There was more than enough space for our family, 2 adults and 7 children. The river views are amazing. This house truly has everything you will need on your stay. We over packed a lot of amenities that are already there! The only thing I could have used were some toddler toys, although with all of the new surroundings I am not sure he would've played with them anyway! The kids (ages 13 years-18 months) all had something to do. Puzzles, kayaks, watching the birds and playing on the pier were all favorites. We were lucky enough to have the owners staying next door so we were given a wealth of information about the area and even a boat ride to catch some fish! We visited a trout hatchery nearby which the kids really enjoyed. We also took a trip over to Hershey's Chocolate world which was about 20-30 minutes away. The house is near a highway and a train track, but neither bothered us on our stay. In fact we kind of liked hearing the trains go by since we do have many where we live. It was very peaceful, we only wished we could have stayed longer. I would definitely recommend this property to friends and family and if we return it will be for more than just a couple of days!

Beautiful Relaxing Family Friendly Atmosphere

  • 5 of 5
This property was perfect for our weekend visit to Hershey. The owners are so very kind and generous; they truly go out of their way to make you feel welcome and special. The house is spacious and warmed with charm and family friendliness, you can do so much together right in the back yard with the river, the kayaks, the yard games available and the fire pit. It just feels like a home away from home. Comfortable and well maintained, you will have a wonderful stay. The owners are very honest about the traffic noise with the highway being close, but it is an oasis and it didn't affect any of our party. The location is amazing when you find yourself close to so many amazing attractions with only a short pop back onto the highway; yet you get back to the house and are surrounded by nature. We had a deer walk right in front of our car pulling down the lane to the driveway. Truly a fantastic, charming place. We promise to return!

From the Owner

My husband David and I purchased this home when our two children were small so that we could have a place to get away as a family on the weekends. The appeal of this property was that it felt remote with the natural surroundings, including the river, mountains and lots of wildlife, and yet it is so convenient to Harrisburg and Hershey and all the amenities of civilization. Our primary home is located just a 30 minute drive away.

Activity and Interests

Car: recommended

Close by are Hershey Park, Chocolate World, the Amish Dutch Country of Lancaster County, Gettysburg Battlefield and Cyclorama, and in Harrisburg the Civil War Museum, Harsco Science Center and Imax Theater, Lake Tobias Wildlife Park with its safari tour, and the Pennsylvania State Farm Show Arena. Try your luck at Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course, or visit local wineries and craft breweries. When you get home from a long day, enjoy birding, fishing for rainbow trout and small mouth bass, and kayaking and tubing the lazy Susquehanna in your back yard. Hike the Appalachian Trail or bike or hike an eighteen mile rails to trails loop that is the largest roadless tract of land in Pennsylvania, both within a short drive of the house.
