5 bedrooms, 2 full baths & 2 half, sleeps 11-12, 3 queen beds, 2 double, 1 twin

Hershey, Gettysburg, and the Dutch Country are at your fingertips, yet you'll enter your own private retreat in this comfortable home on a large corner lot with majestic oak, maple and dogwood trees in a peaceful neighborhood. You will be conveniently located to all the attractions of central Pennsylvania with Hershey thirty minutes to the east, Gettysburg 30 minutes to the west, and the Amish Country 45 minutes south of us. There is easy access to PA and Interstate highways and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. You couldn’t find a better location for vacationing in our area!

The star attraction is the large, privacy-fenced back yard with a large 16’ by 36’ in-ground pool with two fountains, a screened gazebo with dining table, ceiling fans, and lighting, plus a convenient pool house with an outdoor kitchen and a bath with a luxurious oversized tile shower. One extra nice feature is the large poolside deck, not often found in vacation rental homes. The pool opens in early April, and it should be comfortable for swimming within a few weeks as our passive solar heat expedites the warming of the water. Until then, enjoy the relaxing sound of the fountains as you lounge by the pool and make s'mores in the chiminea. (Those daring enough to take a dip in early April are welcome to do so - it's been done many times!)

The 5 bedroom home features a first floor, fully equipped tile kitchen with breakfast nook and top-of-the-line GE Profile stainless steel appliances, including convection double oven, dishwasher, convection microwave, and large refrigerator with water and ice in the door. There is also a second full-size refrigerator in the three season outdoor kitchen so you never run out of refrigerator space.

Also on the first floor is the Southwest bedroom with queen bed and direct access to a half bath (we call it the Palm room!) which can also be accessed from the foyer so that it can be shared.

The first floor L-shaped living/dining area boasts leather dining chairs and comfortable leather couch and chairs for viewing the Sony flatscreen HDTV. We offer Comcast cable with lots of premium tiers like HBO, ESPN, and Showtime. There's even an old Waltz family piano so that the kids can keep up with piano practice.

On the second floor, there are three bedrooms and a full bath on the hall. The master bedroom has a queen size bed, a desk, and a leather chair for viewing the 60' LED TV with sound bar. The second upstairs bedroom also has a queen bed, and the third bedroom on that floor has a double bed, a twin bed and a futon. It's as large as the master bedroom.

In the basement, you'll find the large den/fifth bedroom combination with a Pioneer Elite extra large flat screen HDTV and sound system. There is a half bath on this level. There is a convenient laundry room with washer and dryer in another section of the basement, and we supply all the laundry products. Laundry chutes on the first and second floors send all the dirty laundry directly to the basement laundry room. You can play air hockey with the kids while the laundry is drying!

If you’re looking for good local eateries close to the house, walk to Deiner’s on Main Street for breakfast. It’s decorated with memorabilia from the local high school and a number of students work there. If you’re hungry for bagels, Ressler’s Bagels and Deli will hit the spot, a very short drive from the house. They were rated a perfect “10”, the best bagels in all of central Pennsylvania. Juice ‘N Java, in Windsor Park Shopping Center, five minutes from the house, is a great coffee shop with gourmet sandwiches, etc., free Wi-Fi and laptops provided. We enjoy the fabulous gyros, lamb dishes, chargrilled souvlaki, just everything at Hellenic Kouzina, a family run Greek restaurant with parents and sometimes all nine children pitching in. If you like, you can eat in the courtyard with stone fountain and hanging lights. All of the above restaurants are within five minutes or less from the house by car, and our area has lots of the major chain restaurants as well. There are two Giant Supermarkets within a five minute drive, and the upscale Wegman's Groceries with a gourmet selections of cheese, a Mediterranean bar, craft beer, great sushi, and an expansive hot and cold food bar with dining area is ten minutes from the home.

Your Hosts: We take pride in providing our guests with a sparkling clean home that has been well cared for, and one that is furnished with many conveniences. You will find the house and grounds well maintained. We live in the area and will respond promptly to any need. We truly enjoy helping to make your vacation in central Pennsylvania a very special one to remember.

About the Owner

My husband, two children, and I have lived in Mechanicsburg, an historic village just across the Susquehanna River from Harrisburg, PA, for 25 years. For a number of those years, we lived in this home, where our children walked to the local schools, and Dave and I volunteered in numerous capacities in the community. Our children are now grown and live out of state, and Dave and I spend much of our time at our river cottage just about a 30 minute drive from the house. I enjoy gardening, and often I will be the person stopping by to water the flowers and potted palms and check on the pool during your stay. We will do our best to give you outstanding service because we truly consider you our 'guests' in every sense of the word. Dave is the executive director of a statewide organization, and I am a professor at our local community college. In a few years, we look forward to retiring, when we plan to spend spring, summer and fall in Pennsylvania and winters traveling or visiting grandchildren (when they arrive!)

Comfortable Home For Our Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5
This immaculate property was "as-advertised" and the owners were both responsive and well-organized. There were plenty of bedrooms for our group and the kitchen was well-appointed. The family room in the lower level is a nice spot for the kids to gather and conveniently has its own adjacent half bath. A comfortable place all around.

This is a great find.

We rented this property for a family holiday get-together. It worked out better than expected. It was just like being at home. It was clean and relaxing. The owners are very pleasant and accommodating. The kitchen is well equipped for serving and preparing meals. Even though the rain kept us inside, we were able to hang out in comfort. The children especially enjoyed the air-hockey table in the lower level. I would recommend this property to anyone. While we didn't get to enjoy the outside amenities, they looked very inviting for warmer weather.

Paradise in Pennsylvaniz

  • 5 of 5
5 Stars on the property, house, gazebo and pool. One of the best vacations we shared with our children and grandchildren. We love to be active and want to share a list of all the attractions we went to while vacationing at the house. It took between 1/2 - 1 hour to travel to some, but it was always worth the trip! A dip in the pool before and after added to the pleasure.

The Pennsylvania Oasis

My wife and I took our five grand daughters to spend a few days at Hershey Park. Hotels just weren't be practical. We had such great luck with HomeAway in the past and thought maybe there was a property in the hershey area that would make sense. It didn't take long to find the right one. The drive from Hershey Park to this house was a comfortable 20-25 minutes. The girls loved the number of bedrooms and claimed each with no conflicts. The house is spacious, very well appointed and has wonderful character and charm. All loved the outdoor amenities! The pool is a winner and so convenient when the girls wanted to take a dip. The gazebo offered the two older girls a private getaway for relaxing and chatting. The downtown area of Mechanicsburg (about four blocks away) has quaint stores and shops along Main Street. Nearby (within ten minutes) are major stores and restaurants. If we planned a similar trip with family to the area, we'd definitely check the calendar to see if this property was available.

A mini resort!

  • 5 of 5
A wonderful place to celebrate a 60th birthday! We had 4 generations there ranging in ages 3 months to 88 years and there was something for everyone!!! The pool was a huge hit, as was the entire fenced-in backyard with gazebo, bathhouse, and outdoor kitchen. The house and grounds were very-well maintained, equipped, and clean. We really appreciated not having to take any linens nor bathroom/kitchen supplies from home. David and Janice were gracious hosts in welcoming us to their vacation home. We WILL most definitely visit again. Truly a relaxing and restful getaway site!

Pictures do this property no justice! Beautiful!

Listing was accurate regarding layout, location and amenities. This was a clean and well-maintained house. The owners - Janice and Dave were friendly and had wonderful attitudes not to mention their exceptional customer service. It was like a small private resort. The pool was lovely and chlorine was not harsh on the eyes; and they had plenty of pool toys. Gazebo was awesome. Kitchen was up to date with latest equipment, dishes, utensils, cookware and even spices. Sleeps comfortably 9 adults and 5 children. Would recommend to all must come here at least once. It's like a private peaceful estate. We did Chocolate Tour in Hershey and Lake Tobias Wildlife - truly amazing! Plenty of restaurants and shopping close by.

From the Owner

We chose this property to live and raise our children because it is a safe area with good schools and convenient access to shopping and cultural attractions. We have easy access to major Interstate highways and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. With our son and daughter entering their teen years at the time, we also wanted a home that would be a 'teen magnet' to draw our children and their friends to our home to hang out. With the pool, outdoor kitchen and bath, and other outdoor amenities, as well as the layout of the house which is great for entertaining, our house became the home base for the track team, sleep overs, and pre-prom dinners poolside. The home was a favorite of the church youth group, and we enjoyed hosting cookouts and family reunions there as well. For the same reasons, we know our guests will find this home a wonderful base for a vacation in central Pennsylvania. The only 'drawback' you'll find is that you won't want to leave the house!

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Harrisburg at 20 Miles Nearest Train : Harrisburg at 12 Miles Nearest Motorway : PA Turnpike at 2 Miles Car: necessary

The village of Mechanicsburg is 30 minutes from the Gettysburg battlefield and visitor center, less than 30 minutes from Hershey Park, 45 minutes from Lancaster County's Amish Country. These are all in different directions, so we are very centrally located. There is also a Civil War museum in Harrisburg, just across the river. Mechanicsburg got its name because that's where all the covered wagons stopped to be repaired and worked on after they crossed the Susquehanna River heading west. It has the distinction of being the point of northernmost penetration of the Confederate Army in the Civil War. Other area attractions include Indian Echo Caverns, Lake Tobias Wildlife Park (fabulous for children!), Dutch Wonderland, IMAX theater and Harsco Science Center, and outstanding outlet shopping in Lancaster and Hershey. Enjoy the Appalachian Trail and other great wilderness hiking/biking trails, fishing, kayaking and tubing on the Susquehanna River and Yellow Breeches Creek minutes away.
