3 bedrooms, 2 baths, sleeps 8

Step back in time to an old-fashioned beach cottage where the screen door slams. Lighthouse Cottage is in the shadow of the Tybee Island Lighthouse, which is just 1.5 blocks away. The beach also is just 1.5 blocks away. Leave your window open at night, turn on your ceiling fan, and sleep to the soft rush of the surf. In the heart of the former Fort Screven, this cottage was built in 1920 by the US Army to house non-commissioned officers. Just a block away is Battery Garland and the Fort Screven museum. This is the islands quiet, secluded north end preferred by celebrities. The army built the houses facing each other with a sidewalk between --- no street, just a sidewalk. The streets run behind the houses. The front of Lighthouse Cottage faces a sidewalk; the back is on a traffic-free street. The original clawfoot bathtub and the original enamel kitchen sink/cabinet have been newly restored. Most of the interior walls are 5-inch wide tongue and groove planks laid horizontally. These were discovered and restored when 1/4-inch paneling was removed.

Tybee Island's North Beach: Great dolphin viewing --- virtually guaranteed on the north end of the island. Dolphin boat tours are always available, but sitting on the north beach is just as effective. We once watched a band of dolphins frolicking with a delighted kayaker. Tybee's beaches are equipped with porch swings that seem to be about 100 yards apart. From the north beach swings you can watch the sun set over Savannah and the mouth of the Savannah river --- incredible sunsets. Savannah, being 15 miles away, is too far away to actually see but you can see the fireworks on July 4th and New Year's Eve. Shrimp boats with their nets spread like wings are always in view.

The 2 Lighthouses: Two lighthouses less than 3 miles apart but so radically different in character. As you approach Tybee Island, you see the impressive Tybee Light in the distance. Tall, dark, and handsome with a white cumberbund. He was honored a couple of years ago when he got his own US postage stamp. ( In lighthouse circles that is akin to an Oscar.) But then as you cross the Lazaretto bridge onto Tybee Island, you look down to the left and blink. Is that a lighthouse in the water? Indeed it is. That's plucky little Cockspur Lighthouse. Weathered, plain white masonry. Not flashy at all, except ... At every high tide Cockspur stands in the ocean well off-shore. Only at low tide does the stony spur appear that supports the little lighthouse. A firm foundation after all.

Lost in the 40's/50's: So far the quaint shopping district near the pier has pretty much escaped the wrecking ball. Witness Arby's --- Tybee Island's only fast food restaurant. This is what Arby's looked like when they began in the early 60's. As for shopping, no Sak's here. We're talking beach shopping: T-shirts, souvenirs, Sno-Cones, umbrella drinks, seafood. But remember, for culture and serious shopping, there is colorful, historic Savannah, just 20 minutes away. We love this place......

  • 5 of 5
This was our third stay at the Lighthouse Cottage, and we enjoyed every second. The new deck, screen house, and patio furniture were a great touch! Even though the weather was cool, we found it warm and sunny out back most afternoons. Thanks, Ted, for our wonderful month on Tybee, away from the worst new England winter in years!!!! See you next January!

Perfect Weekend at The Beach

  • 5 of 5
I came with a large group of friends, and the space was perfect. We came inside and were extremely satisfied. Very clean, well kept, lively decorated/furnished and well supplied! It was a 3 minute walk to the beach, and pretty much incredible for the price. Not sure why anyone would want to waste money at a hotel with this wonderful house as an option.

Very disappointed

  • 1 of 5
Location is terrible. Pictures are out of date. The inside of the cottage just needs some TLC and some new furniture. You couldn't open some of the shutters because the hinges were broken. Moldings falling off the door frames. The sleeper sofa/futon was very low to the floor, and there is no way anyone could sleep on it, very uncomfortable, covered with a cheap blanket. Not sure where the 8th person is supposed to sleep. The double bed needs a new mattress. I think someone cleared out the DVD collection. The tub shower curtain is disgusting. Wall paper peeling off walls in some location. WIFI is being shared with everyone within range because the owner refuses to use a security key, so it is so slow, you can barely use it. Do not bring an elderly person. My Mom could barely get in the cottage without falling flat on her face. The outside is totally nasty. The slatted skirting along the bottom of the cottage is broken, missing of falling apart. There is all kinds of crap under the cottage. Building materials, and stuff that should have been thrown away. What else lives under there? The gas grill was unusable unless you like to eat rust, and the handle was broken with electricians tape on it so you don't get cut on the metal. There is all kinds of rusty lawn chairs lined up along the bottom of the cottage in the back. The hot tub is not in existence. There are rusty chairs, and a table that you cannot set a glass on because it sags and your glass or cup will fall over, on the wooden deck. There is an ugly PVC curtain rod system, with no curtains attached to the poles on the deck. The fountain out front is inoperative and very nasty. The landscaping is either dead or falling over. There are rusty paint cans and an old rusty propane tank on the ground along the side of the cottage. The gutter over the back door, which is your main entrance, has trees growing from it. The website pictures are not a representation of what you are actually paying for. I would not recommend this cottage to anyone until everything is fixed. And the price should be reduced for what you get. We were looking for another cottage early in the week, unfortunately, no luck, so we had no choice to stay, but left a day early.

Owner's Response: I am flabbergasted by this review. The location is terrific. When I lived here full time, I loved having the remains of Fort Screven just outside my door and loved being so close to the lighthouse and the beach.

Before you take this review seriously please read the next review which was written by a guest who stayed with us about a month earlier than this reviewer and wrote a far more realistic review.

This is a historic beach home, not a resort. I have stored some personal supplies underneath the house.

The comments about the condition of the slatted skirting are mystifying. The skirting is in excellent condition. None of it is missing or broken. It doesn't even need painting.

To answer the question "Where does the 8th person sleep?" Six sleep on a full bed and 2 queens. Two more sleep comfortably on the trundle daybed (not a futon). I'm guessing the trundle is the bed so close to the floor that no one could sleep on it. It has two new twin mattresses on it.

I wanted to respond to each issue in this review but ran out of the space alloted by HomeAway. I will respond to as many as I can.

Because of this review I will put new photos online, but the only difference you will see is different bed linens and rearranged living room furniture. The hot tub was nowhere to be found because we don't have one. Most places don't supply beach chairs. We do. I found 4 chairs without rust and 3 with a little rust.

"Trees are growing in the gutters." None of the historic homes on Tybee, including this one, have gutters. As a courtesy to guests, I put a 4-foot strip of gutter over a doorway to keep rainwater from streaming onto guests as they entered. There were indeed a few 4-inch seedlings there, easily removed.

I have preserved as much of the past in this cottage as I could. Sections of some walls have been partially sanded to show all the colors of the past. I'm sure this guest thought the rooms were in serious need of a paint job and "some TLC".

A loose hinge to a plantation shutter has been tightened. A wallpaper seam was pasted

The reviewer dug deep to find things to complain about but had nothing to say about cleanliness. I take that as a genuine compliment to the housekeeping crew.

This is an old-fashioned, small-town beach cottage. If you're looking for something elegant (as this reviewer was), you should be in The Peach Penthouse (listing 177637) or Dreamsicle Beach Cottage (969659) or on Hilton Head Island.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Savannah at 25 Miles

Just a half-block to the south of Lighthouse Cottage is a large park with a stream, gazebo, and park benches. To get to the beach from Lighthouse Cottage you walk past 3 cottages (a short block) and the beach is a half-block to the right, the lighthouse is a half-block to the left, and Fort Screven museum is a half-block straight ahead.

The museum is where all of Tybee Island's parades begin. Easily the most popular parade is the Beach Bum Parade --- an audience participation parade --- usually held the weekend before Memorial Day weekend. All the floats are equipped with barrels of water so that people on the floats can fire water at the spectators --- and the spectators shoot water back at the floats (and any other target at hand). For more civilized entertainment there is the Savannah Film Festival in late October and the many art galleries resulting from the growing renown of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). [On the Google map, 'Gulick St' is a parking lot.]
