Sun All Day & on the Beach: a '50's Beach Cottage!

Overview

Property Details

Updated: Nov 19, 2014
Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

SeaSpray Cottage is the quintessential 50's beach cabin! Whether you seek a family vacation cottage or a cozy romantic getaway cottage for two, SeaSpray is the perfect vacation cottage from which to explore and experience the beauty of Lopez Island, a jewel of the San Juan Islands. Known as the 'Friendly Isle', it is a haven for bicycling, kayaking, gentle hiking, beachcombing and beautiful views of the San Juan Islands and Olympic Mountains. Lopez Island is peaceful and quiet.

SeaSpray Cottage is 30 feet from the natural rock steps down onto our private, no-bank beach on Davis Bay. Launch your own kayak from the shore, fly kites with the kids, picnic on the sand or take your family for a bicycle tour of rolling farmlands and gentle fields. Your family can walk along the trails at Iceberg Point, explore Shark's Reef, play at Spencer Spit State Park or Watmough Bay.

SeaSpray has just been completely 'refreshed' inside during the spring of 2012. With the walls whitewashed, new plush carpet underfoot, new lighting and many new touches throughout, the cottage is every bit as original 50's and charming as ever, but fresh and bright and ready to delight you.

SeaSpray's living room is perfect for spending time together; relaxing in front of the wood stove, reading or watching the water just out the windows that stretch across the front of the cottage. Move onto the Sun Porch, even closer to the beach and listen to the waves and the grumbling sea lions. There is a large dining table here for your evening meals. The kitchen is small but fully equipped for family style cooking. Plenty of dishes, glassware and cookware are provided for your use. You will also find a microwave, coffee maker, toaster, full set of kitchen knives and a hand mixer. The kitchen is open to the living room, across the breakfast counter, which will seat four. Along the eastern picture window off the kitchen sits a breakfast table for two more people.

The Master bedroom is on the ocean side of the cottage and has a double bed. From here a sliding glass door opens onto the Sun Porch so the breeze and water sounds will find you while sleeping. The kids will enjoy the cozy, built in 'cabin style' bunks in the garden side bedroom. We have provided fine quality cotton linens for all the beds and fluffy towels for after your showers. The bathroom has been freshly painted and the shower surround tiled, adding another sparkle to the cottage. Beach towels will accompany you to the shore for your adventures there.

It may look small, but SeaSpray Cottage has been a cozy, comfortable year round residence that is big on making memories for families! Whether in winter, summer, spring or fall there is no better spot for a getaway. Come be our guest at SeaSpray!

Thank you!

My husband and I stayed at the Sea Spray Cottage for 5 days. As we write this , one can only think of hearing the surf rolling up on the pristine beach next to our cottage. We even saw eagles flying by! Lopez Island is wonderful , and staying at the south end of this island is perfect, no crowds. You have the place to yourself. Perfect place for couples. All of the pictures are true. Very, Very CLEAN! The gardens are wonderful too. This property is very well maintained. If peace and quiet is what you desire, Sea Spray is the place. We love you guys and will be back! Hugs, Chris and Kathy

Idyllic

  • 5 of 5
We spent three weeks in this wonderful place and plan to return this coming summer.

We brought kayaks and spent time on the water everyday -- hiked in the nearby parks -- kicked back in the comfortable, clean cottage. The western facing aspect is the best: the Olympics, the sunsets, the beach. It completely fills the bill for life-long San Juan lovers.

An unexpected plus: this is the perfect place for those with environmental sensitivities -- as allergen free as it is possible to be, due to the efforts and attention of the hosts.

Another unexpected plus: the welcome or our hosts, whose attention was perfect.

Owner's Response: Thank you both for the wonderful review! It was our pleasure to meet you both and have you as guests, and we really enjoyed having 'in residence' for such a great part of the summer! You were there long enough to have many different garden gifts make it to your doorway, as well as a few repeats....(yay beets)! Spending several weeks there also gave you two San Juan Islands lovers many sunrises, beautiful sunsets and the many personalities of mood and weather on the water.

We are very excited to have you return to the cottage this summer and can't wait for your arrival! To our two guests, now friends, welcome back.

Paradise on Lopez II

  • 5 of 5
As I stated in my last review, my family and I enjoyed a week long stay at SeaSpray Cottage in July. I dreamed of coming back, but never dreamed it would be only 6 months from our last stay. My husband surprised me with a trip back to the cottage for my 40th birthday. Our stay started the end of January and concluded in Feb. In all honesty we were hoping for big thunderstorms or snow, just because we have never had the chance to experience those things while staying at the beach. Mother Nature had other plans for us, she gave us beautiful bright sunny skies and wonderful weather. This trip was just for the two of us and I cannot express how relaxing and rejuvenating it was. We arrived late and it was rainy that night, but we got a fire going in the fireplace the minute we got in the cottage and it warmed right up. We woke up to sunny skies and gorgeous sun rises every morning. The wood burning fireplace kept us plenty warm during our stay. Once again the cottage was everything we hoped and as I told Michelle when we left; it was like coming home. The beach invited us down many times each day and each time we were pleasantly surprised by the treasures we found. Whether it was driftwood, sea glass, or the many colored rocks; it was always something to look forward to. To be able to just sit and soak in all that the ocean has to offer is the best gift anyone could receive. Michelle once again shared her giving spirit by leaving me a birthday card and sharing her part of the island with us. What a true blessing to have discovered this little piece of paradise on earth and the wonderful hostesses who own it!

Owner's Response: It was great fun to be included in planning your surprise birthday getaway at the cottage! We are so pleased that you enjoyed that surprise, the unseasonably sunny weather in January and the quiet time together.

While we love having families visit the cottage, it is also very special for us to have guests bring their special occasions to celebrate at the cottage; birthdays, anniversaries, reunions or simply a romantic getaway! Somehow the cottage is even more cozy and better off for all the wonderful times celebrated within it's walls! Come back soon...and thank you both very much for another heart filled review!

Paradise on Lopez

  • 5 of 5
As I sit here in cold wintery Utah, my thoughts drift to the warm wonderful July week my family and I spent at SeaSpray Cottage. Our family of four (two boys 14 and 7) had a fabulous stay that will be dreamed of for many years to come. SeaSpray is a quintessential beach front cabin. The boys had their choice of two bunk beds, so they could both sleep on the top if they wanted to; my husband and I enjoyed the Oceanside bedroom with the sound of waves caressing us to sleep each night. There is plenty of room for everyone to spread out in the cottage. We cooked many meals in the well-stocked kitchen. We are big on BBQing and made use of the provided BBQ many times. Mother Nature provided plenty of fresh air that came through the many windows and kept the cabin very comfortable. Just steps away from the cabin, is the beautiful beach that starts out sandy and progressively graduates to pebbles and on to bigger rocks. The beach provided us with many hours of discovery as we searched for the latest treasure that was brought in by the gentle waves. The boys had a fantastic time playing in the water and building forts, which is highly encouraged by the owners! We enjoyed beach bonfires and s’mores while watching the sun set or the otters/seals/geese playing in the bay. There are many things to do during your stay here on the island but it is so wonderful to come back to the cottage each evening and enjoy the wildlife, sunsets, and large yard as well. To know that the kids are safe and able to enjoy the area while we relaxed is another gift. There are some toys and games provided, even outside items to keep everyone entertained. The Wi-Fi was excellent, although with all there is to do and enjoy, I don’t know many that would stay connected for very long. The thing that made our stay at SeaSpray Cottage far and above anywhere else that we have stayed is Michelle. She is one of the owners and welcomed us with open arms and said good-bye with tears. Her giving and caring spirit show just how much she loves sharing her beautiful part of the island with others. If you are lucky enough to spend time at the cottage during the summer, you will more than likely be given the gift of veggies from their garden and delicious homemade treats that were baked with heart and soul. We did not get the chance to meet Lanie, but we hope to the next time we stay here. I never dreamed it would be so quickly after we left.

Best vacation ever!

  • 5 of 5
Half way through our week at SeaSpray, my partner and I looked at each other and said, "This is the best vacation we've ever had." A combination of things contributed to that. SeaSpray itself is gorgeous. The cottage is comfortable, clean, and imbued with light and a great friendly spirit. It was perfect for two people and probably would be equally accommodating for four or six. The sun room is fabulous. We ate many meals there or outside on the deck. The ocean is visible from almost any point in the cottage. In the mornings, we could drink coffee in bed and watch the gentle swells roll in, with the majestic Olympics in the background.

The proximity of the ocean to the cottage is stunning. The beach is so inviting. Many evenings we spent sitting in chairs overlooking Davis Bay as the sun swept lazily to the west. And every day we took our kayaks out on the smooth waters of the bay and explored points east and west. The variety of animal life provided constant fascination: seals, otters, deer, rabbits, and (we kid you not) a bald eagle swimming across the bay (Google "bald eagle swimming"!).

From the cottage we rode our bikes all over the island. We rode into town several times, and the ride to Shark Reef was quick and easy.

We like to dine out a lot, but SeaSpray was so inviting, we ended up eating in every night, grilling fish or making great salads (some with fresh greens Michelle brought us from the garden!).

We were fortunate enough to be on the island for the 4th of July. The parade was so much fun, and the fireworks were the most spectacular we've ever seen.

But above all, Michelle and Lanie have created a welcoming, beautiful space where people like Cai and I can escape the rattle and screech of our daily lives and relax into our natural state ... reacquaint ourselves with our souls ... and appreciate the spontaneity and creativity of the natural world.

Thank you, Michelle and Lanie. Thank you SeaSpray. We'll see you next year!

We loved having you as guests! It was so fun to share the bounty of the garden and to share your delight in your surroundings. We can't wait to see you again, one day soon.

So Lovely

  • 5 of 5
I occasionally take 'Mommy weekends' wherein I abandon my family to indulge in solitude. This time I was SO lucky to stumble upon this cottage on VRBO. It is perfect. It is 100% exactly as the pics show: So close to the water that you can hear the waves and spend many an hour watching the light on the water. The cabin has anything you need and if you're missing anything the tiny village grocery store is shockingly well equiped.
The cabin is super cozy, I spent hours reading in the living room. The view is so lovely that despite the rain I couldnt help but enjoy walks on the rocky beach; several times I looked at the water only to see a sea lions staring back at me from the water.
But what makes this place the best is how much the owners actually CARE about your stay. Michelle was just wonderful. She really cared about my experience. She checked in and was just SO sweet. I have been many places on my weekends, but this is the first place that has made it to my 'must come back list'
Be warned that Lopez isn't filled with tourist attractions - but if you love natural beauty and a place to relax it is PERFECT. Don't forget to check out the library - a great building that was like the community hub while I was there.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for spending your precious, solo getaway time at SeaSpray Cottage! Having a chance to instill deep quiet and rest is really essential when one is raising a busy family and working full time. We heartily applaud your strategy!

We are so glad that the music and light on the water and the creatures around entertained in just the gentlest of ways.

Please return to the cottage as often as you can. We will look forward to seeing you again. Our thanks, Michelle and Lanie

We loved the sunny, expansive view of the sea framed by the Olympic Mountains and we love being right on the beach. We wanted to have our grown kids bring their children here, where they can make memories together. We watch eagles, deer, geese, otters, seals and sealions play at the water's edge.
