The 'Gingerbread House' was designed in the late 1920's by J. Alvin Shadinger and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a Tudor-French Norman cottage completed in 1931 during the times he was designing similar cottages in the Diamond Head area and was Mr. Shadinger's home for many years. The house has been a location for several movies and television series. It has recently been remodeled and is located just across the street from Kahala Beach.

The Gingerbread house is built on 3 levels with split A/C and has 4 bedrooms, all with queen size luxury pillow-top mattresses adorned with Italian bedding. Tasteful art and accessories compliment each bedroom as well as flat screen televisions with built in DVD. The downstairs bedroom has a lovely view of the backyard fountain and pool. The hardwood floors throughout the home have been refinished and the living area is appointed with modern furnishings which give a clean, understated look letting the beauty of this one-of-a-kind cottage and it's natural surroundings sparkle. The kitchen is designed with professional appliances featuring a Viking gas range, Sub-Zero refrigerator, separate ice-maker and wine cooler, and dishwasher. The dining room seats at least 8 people and is located just a few steps above the living room and indoor bar area which has another flat screen television with built in DVD. Complimentary wireless internet service.

The beautifully landscaped back yard features a pool, black tiled spa, covered lanai and a separate gazebo to make this a great home away from home in Hawaii. Just minutes away from Kahala Mall, Hanauma Bay, Ala Moana Shopping Center, and fine dining.

About the Owner

I've lived in the islands for more than 30 years and fell in love with this house when I first saw it never realizing that one day I would own it! It truly is a treasure and one that you will enjoy. Take a walk across the street down the path to the beach. We have some beautifully pristine & clear water for swimming and snorkeling. There is also a pipe that many people walk on quite a ways out to check out the water. But, please,, do this part at your own risk!!!!!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our family spent 5 nights at the Gingerbread House as part of our vacation (from Australia) and we did not want to leave. Our group ranged in age from 19 months to 65 years and the house was perfect for everyone. From the fantastic chef's kitchen, the beautifully landscaped gardens, the relaxing pool and lanai to the beach just across the road, we couldn't have asked for better. Not to mention the unique character of the property. We also appreciated all the small touches inside the property which helped to make our stay comfortable. Veronica and Sandy were great hosts and very accommodating to our needs. Thank you both. We would love to visit again in the future.

Fantastic Place!

We had such an amazing experience at the Gingerbread House. It truly is spectacular, and the pictures do not do the property justice. Our family of 6 adults and 1 child, made many memories at the house, in particular the incredible backyard, which included a completely covered lanai with seating area, eating area and bbq area. Every meal was eaten outside. The spacious kitchen was fully stocked with anything we needed to prepare our meals. The swimming pool was put to lots of use, whether to swim laps, float around or horse around. It was big enough for us all. There were lots of pool toys and beach toys for us to use. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms were tastefully decorated. Sandy and Veronica were extremely welcoming. Thank you for your hospitality and welcome gifts. The location of the property is very convenient. I would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone. You will not be disappointed. I hope to be back to stay there again.

Gingerbread House

We had a wonderful stay in this historic home. Sandy, the property manager was very helpful and prompt when we needed anything. The beds were very comfy, the back yard very tropical and inviting to relax and lay by the pool. Great for families or a group of couples. Great gourmet kitchen and large dining room. The only draw backs is the noise of the adjoining roads and the partying folks leaving the beach late at night. The house however is truly wonderful!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much! The holidays certainly had everyone in the holiday spirit especially over New Year's with all of the firework displays. This is the first time I can recall we've ever had a private firework display at a residence just a block or so down from The Gingerbread House. The beaches have been one of the favorite spots for all locals to view the firework displays from downtown Honolulu as well. I know there were lots of onlookers! We hope to see you back again and wish you and your family best wishes for 2015! Veronica & Sandy

Best Lanai Living and More

We were thrilled to stay at the Gingerbread House! There was plenty of room for 5 adults and a baby. Every bedroom was beautifully appointed with crisp, lovely linens. Many meals were prepared in the large, open kitchen, and every single meal, including plate lunch from our favorite drive-in, was enjoyed on the huge and comfortable lanai. Everyone loved the pool and hot tub, as well as the lovely landscaped yard. Kahala Beach is a quiet and serene neighborhood beach, just across the street. It was perfect for our granddaughter too. The property manager Sandy was superb from start to finish, making us all feel welcome and cared for.
Our family looks forward to our next visit to the Gingerbread House.

There's amazing, and then there's AH-MAY-ZING.

We stayed at the Gingerbread House for 2 months, as we were in Honolulu for work — it was a house filled with a few families with kids of all ages, and it was beyond our expectations. It was perfect.

First off, the owner Veronica was super-responsive and friendly, and even brought us a few treats like a big bag of Hawaiian Coffee and snacks upon our arrival. She was easy to work details out with in terms of booking and check-in. The property manager Sandy was fantastic — not only was she very responsive when we encountered issues with the house (it IS an older house, impeccably maintained, but still a historic older house) but we also hired her for very reasonable cleaning services every 2 weeks to keep our living space in tip-top condition (a hard job for us with kids always underfoot!).

Second, the backyard is a dream. There is a little sink and small fridge out on the lanai, and we were also able to rent a large fridge to keep out on the lanai for spillover storage (did I mention we were a full house of a few families?). Everything was comfortable, and pool towels as well as sunscreen and bugspray were provided! The pool guy came every Thursday for maintenance. There were a lot of mosquitos off to one side, but hey, you are living in the tropics. Nothins a citronella candle, the overhead fans and some DEET-free spray couldn't fix. We grilled almost everyday and enjoyed the hot tub at night.

Third, the inside was just so charming and bigger than the photos show. Its open, airy design made the place really comfortable for our large party - we never felt like we were in each others' way! The kitchen is truly gourmet - equipped with everything you could ever need for any sort of meal!

Fourth, the proximity to the beach (uh, can we say 500 feet away, entrance RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET???) was unbeatable. The Kahala Beach is beautiful, small, secluded. Perfect for stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, wading... we even spotted a few whales beyond the break. Magical. We were also able to stroll down 1 mile to the Kahala Resort to say hello to the dolphins and dine in world-class restaurants.

I wouldn't hesitate to stay again! In fact, it makes any other place on Oahu pale in comparison. We would HAVE to stay at the Gingerbread House, or bust. We don't make recommendations lightly, just look up our travel blog at 4 For The Road!

(Oh, the house is very well-known among locals. It's even a little tour-bus stop!)

Owner's Response: We loved having you at The Gingerbread House.. Sorry about the mosquitoes, you were here during our rainy season and that's about all it takes to hatch out a bunch and then they go looking for dinner, which unfortunately were you! You guys were just too sweet!! But you had the perfect repellent, the citronella candle outside on the lanai table always seems to do the trick and for those of you they hunt down no matter what, the DEET spray.. Please come back and stay with us again! Aloha and a hui ho, Veronica & Sandy
