Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Other (See Description), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 3)

Tara Cottage is a handcrafted redwood and cedar octagon on secluded and beautifully landscaped property in Kona coffee country, overlooking Kealakekua Bay and the South Kona coastline. Kealakekua Bay, with its unparalleled fine swimming, snorkeling and kayaking, and Pu'uhonua O Honaunau (the Place of Refuge in Honaunau) National Park are both less than 10 minutes away.

Three lovely beaches are within a 15 minute drive. Tara Cottage is within minutes of fine restaurants, health food stores, produce markets, shops and theater in the villages of Captain Cook, Kealakekua and Kainaliu. The bustling resort town of Kailua-Kona with its array of fine options for dining, shopping and entertainment is 30 minutes drive north.

The cottage features a dramatic 300 sq. ft octagonal main room with a 15 ft apex and skylight. Furnishings include: a raised platform bed with an excellent queen mattress, Art Deco armoire, writing desk and a sitting area with an enclosed cabinet for cable TV and DVD. There is a fine stereo system with both CD player and iPod/MP3 dock and high speed wireless internet.

Tara Cottage is beautifully appointed with original artwork, fine furniture and Indonesian wood carvings and fabrics. You will also enjoy the excellent libraries of fine books, CDs and DVDs.

Surrounding the octagonal main room are: the kitchen with its door to the service porch with washer and dryer and recycling center; the dining area with a 9 foot bank of windows framing a stunning view of Kealakekua Bay, and the door to the lanai; a large 'water closet'; and an intimate day room with its twin bed, window to the garden and its birdbath, and the back door opening to the shower area in a gorgeous bamboo and bromeliad garden. One showers outdoors in a dramatic lava rock grotto within this garden. The shower is equipped with Grohe fixtures and side jets, for a sensual, satisfying shower/massage. The shower is the most complimented amenity of the cottage... Guests love this waterfall shower! Complete privacy is provided by the landscaping and the surrounding lush Thai bamboo.

On the ocean side of the cottage is a bi-level lanai with superb unobstructed views of Kealakekua Bay and the coastline, featuring a dining table and chairs and chaise lounges for sunning and relaxation. The spacious lawn area with its profusion of Hawaiian ti plants and bougainvillaea provides a truly park-like setting-- ideal for special occasions and small wedding/ commitment/ recommitment ceremonies.

Tara Cottage was carefully sited to take full advantage of prevailing day and nighttime breezes and is comfortable year round at its 900 ft elevation. It is a truly remarkable destination for adults desiring a peaceful environment with few distractions--perfect for honeymoons, special anniversaries, contemplation and preparation for life changes, and creative endeavors.

About the Owner

My name is Michael Sisk and I have been living above Kealakekua Bay on the Kona Coast of Hawaii's Big Island since 1994, when I moved here from the island of Kauai. I live on land that I developed and named Tara Farm--a 15 acre Kona coffee and gourmet white pineapple farm, also the site of beautiful Tara Cottage.

I was born and raised in the Washington, D.C. area, moving to San Francisco to take a job as the Audiologist for Alameda County in 1978. After 13 years in the Bay Area I moved to Kauai in 1991 and managed a B&B there for 3 years. The move to the Big Island followed in 1994 where I managed another beautiful B&B at Kealakekua Bay while developing my farm upslope at the 950 ft elevation. I moved onto the farm full-time in 1997 and have been privileged to live there ever since.

"The Perfect Place to Reload Your Batteries"

You can read all about the attractions and the beauty of the Big Island in appropriate travel guides. So, let's concentrate on Tara Cottage, the cottage surroundings and the host Michael.

We arrived at night after a long trip and did not take much notice of anything and went to sleep in the very big and comfortabel bed. When we woke up the next morning, we could admire the sheer beauty of it all: the view over the Pacific Ocean and Kealakekua Bay, the very tastefully furnished cottage, the exquisit choce of classical music CDs, the vast assortment of books on the shelves, the welcoming basket of treats that waited for us (including delicious coffee from the farm Tara Cottage is located on). To make a long story short: we had the feeling, we had arrived in paradise and this cannot get any better... but then we met Michael, our host. He is the most charming man you can imagine: warm, friendly, very willing to share his knowledge, considerate and always observing our privacy.

The whole atmosphere in and around Tara Cottage is the perfect place to relax and reload your batteries or for a romantic time-out with your significant other.

We decided and promised to come back and can hardly wait to do so.

It is a pity that I only have the possibility to assign 5 stars here. I would like to add a PLUS!

A little peice of heaven

Tara Cottage is a perfect romantic getaway for young and old alike. The grounds are awesome. Birds, Roosters, chickens and geckos greet you every morning, and the Coqui frogs chirped us to sleep each night. Coffee is grown on the grounds and is free for your stay which is really cool. Plus some other special snacks await your arrival. The octagon shaped room is beautiful place to hang out. The outdoor shower is awesome! Michael, the owner is nearby and his little dog is the cutest!

Love This Place

  • 5 of 5
I found Tara Cottage on line, read the reviews and based my decision to stay there on the excellent reviews and of course the photos. We loved it! You can plan on relaxing at the home with beautiful views or explore the island, the location is perfect. I don't often return to the same vacation spot because we feel there is so much of our world to see. Since we left we have discussed many times, how much we will be back to Tara Cottage. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend a week as Mike's quest. He has the home looking fantastic. The views from the windows and grounds are more then we ever imagined it could be. When we arrived after a long day of travel we were welcomes with fresh fruit, nuts, bread and coffee that was grown on his land. I don't think there was anything that could be improved on. This place is a 10 out of 10. I look forward to coming back someday!

Can I Live Here?

  • 5 of 5
A goal of mine when I travel is to step back from the hustle and bustle of tourist tracks and look for local moments. Tara Cottage was a direct hit. I came in late Saturday evening and what a welcome- the cottage was warmly lit, and I immediately took that opportunity to unwind and peruse the cottage, munching on macadamia nuts from one of the baskets of fresh local goodies Michael had left for me. The cottage decor is beautiful, cozy and warm. I could never sleep in- always anxiously awaiting a chance to see the first peak of daylight that opened the grounds and the astounding view in front of me while I sipped morning coffee. Peace. The birds sang and occasionally Kiholo and Michael playing with a ball would catch my eye. Michael gave me such good tips and recommendations. One of my favorite places was Place of Refuge- where I saw several turtles and enjoyed hiking, and snorkeling at Two Step nearby. There was little need to go too far- with farmers markets, good grocery market and some wonderful sites all within 20 miles. Rest assured, I've been telling my family and friends about this little place of refuge- Tara Cottage and hope to return someday. Thanks for a wonderful visit.

10 years later this was our second stay on Big Island where we spent our 10th wedding anniversary. The days before we arrived, we resided in generous suites in 5* hotels in Las Vegas and Honolulu but Tara Cottage topped those (also very good) experiences easily. The surroundings are spectacular to say the least and everything is in pristine condition. The cottage itself is super cosy (but not small) with a very sophisticated interior and has got all the ameneties one could wish for. Also Michael's hospitality was better than we ever could have expected. Despite knowing quite a bit about Big Island, Michael's "bible" contained extremely helpful information and provided us with experiences we otherwise would have missed. The outdoor shower was probably the best kind of shower we ever had in our entire live. Breakfast on the upper lanai, chilling on the lower lanai, PRIVACY, Kiholo the cute and friendly dog, wildlife a plenty, sunsets out of this world, the nightly bird concerto, we could go on forever and hope you get the idea, everything was FANTASTIC. A very special thanks also to our new friends the Geckos, they are so friendly and took care of unwanted insects. Please, if you visit Tara cottage, feed them some honey, it's their favorite. We will never forget our wonderful stay at Tara Cottage and if we ever manage to come back to Big Island, there is no question where we will stay, Tara Cottage and Tara Cottage only. Honestly, you'd be a fool to go somewhere else. MAHALO AND ALOHA from Europe!

It was our first vacation to the Big Island and after searching tons of accommodations we chose to stay at Tara Cottage. Our stay here was the highlight of our trip! Tara Cottage was simply BEAUTIFUL and a AMAZING property! The inside was so nicely decorated and comfortable and the outside grounds impeccable with an amazing view. Michael and his property assistant Chuck did everything to make our stay an unforgettable experience. We were welcomed with a basket of local goodies, fresh fruit, milk, and a gorgeous flower arrangement plus all the tasty Kona coffee we could drink from the farm. It was our first outdoor shower experience and it was wonderful. There is something so special about this place and we cannot recommend Tara Cottage highly enough. It was a little slice of paradise! We are already planning to come back. Thank you again for a truly amazing vacation on the Big Island!

A corner of Paradise

  • 5 of 5
Our stay at the Tara cottage has been like having a little taste of Haven. It's very private, the plantation is beautiful, and the view of Kealakekua Bay amazing. You might just forget about leaving to the beach, you could just stay at the cottage and enjoy the birds bathing in the bird bath next to the smaller bedroom, have fun with the geckos, read a book, or just explore the plantation. The cottage has this wonderful energy inside, the kitchen is stocked with everything you need, including the fresh coffee from the very plantation you're staying at, and Michael, the owner is truly one of a kind person. While attentive to your every need, you will also barely feel his presence.
This is truly the best place to stay on Big Island, especially if you are looking for an intimate, special place, away from the noise and the crowds.
We will definitely come again.

From the Owner

While rebuilding my home and business on Kauai following Hurricane Iniki in 1992, I would periodically visit the Big Island for relief from the physical and emotional stress associated with recovery from that truly devastating (Level 4) hurricane. Instinctively I was drawn to Kealakekua Bay and the Place of Refuge National Park area of South Kona-- though I had previously visited there only once before during my years of exploring the Hawaiian islands beginning in 1981. In this area that I later learned was and is sacred to the Hawaiian people, I experienced what I can only describe as profound healing energy. This healing allowed me to return to Kauai again and again over the next two years -- each time invigorated, energized and able to engage in the demanding hurricane recovery efforts. My love for the beauty and the healing that I found in the Kealakekua Bay and Place of Refuge area was so remarkable that I was literally compelled to move here. This I did in late 1994 after selling my property on Kauai. And after months of careful searching I finally was led to the land that I have developed over the years into Tara Cottage and Farm. I believe that this land that I now call Tara-- and that I am privileged to caretake-- is imbued with the sacred healing energy so often associated with the Big Island in general--and this region of South Kona in particular. This belief has been shared and reinforced by native intuitives/healers from both Hawaii and other cultures who have visited this property over the years. But please-- don't take my word for it! Come and see if you too find here some of that connection that ultimately led me to move here and make this place of beauty my permanent home.

The district of South Kona hugs the southwestern coastal slopes of the huge 13,679 ft. Mauna Loa volcano. This region's one main road, Hwy. 11, passes through an upslope rather than coastal area dotted with small villages. It is a rural agricultural region of undulating green hillsides, colorful tropical foliage and panoramic oceanviews, renowned for its Kona coffee fields, macadamia nut orchards and organic fruit and vegetable farms. Its most popular coastal region is lovely Kealakekua Bay, famous for its unparalleled fine snorkeling, kayaking and scuba diving, and as the site of the demise of explorer Captain James Cook. Another remarkable coastal area is beautiful Puuhonua O Honaunau National Park, the ancient Hawaiian Place of Refuge.

Both the marine preserve of Kealakekua Bay and the Place of Refuge National Park are within a 10-15 minute drive of Tara Cottage. Just north of the boundary of the Place of Refuge Park is the popular 'Two-Step' snorkel/dive spot, with easy entry into the water for swimming/snorkeling surrounded by colorful reef fish, sea turtles and spinner dolphins.

Even closer is beautiful Paleaku Peace Gardens, offering strolls through manicured gardens as well as ongoing yoga classes and various scheduled events; and the popular Painted Church.

From the Owner

Tara Cottage is ideally located between Kealakekua Bay and the beautiful Place of Refuge National Park--both less than a 10 minute drive way. The Bay--the site of the demise of famous explorer Captain Cook in 1779--is a marine preserve that is truly the best place on the island to swim, snorkel, kayak and scuba dive-- while enjoying the infinite varieties of reef fish, sea turtles and the famous spinner dolphins that come closer to shore here than anywhere else in the world. The Place of Refuge National Park, sacred to the Hawaiian people, is another wonderful place to explore, with educational exhibits on the life of the Hawaiian people, a superb picnic area, and wonderful hiking trails along this historic coast. There are three lovely beaches within 15 minutes of Tara Cottage. Also the villages of Captain Cook, Kealakekua and Kainaliu are within a 5-15 minute drive and offer an array of fine restaurants, shops with local arts and crafts, and markets and produce stands featured the organic fruits and vegetables for which this area is well known.
