About twelve miles down the nearby South Point Road lies the historical and pristine natural area known as KA LAE a sacred place for Native Hawaiians, where the first of Hawaii's people landed. Also down this road lies a rare GREEN SAND BEACH that takes a good 2.5 mile hike each way, or sturdy four wheel drive vehicle to access.

At fifteen minutes drive North lies the second longest lava tube in the world at KULA KAI CAVERNS--one of the best tours on the Island into this amazing 20 mile long (and still mapping) tube is offered by a local tour operator. All in all this a rare area full of exotic natural treasures.

About the Owner

We are Barney & Elizabeth, Sam & Gabe, owners of Ailani Orchards, a family owned and run organic orchard since 2001. We pride ourselves on offering truly healthy organic food including the NOW FAMOUS KA`U COFFEE!

We produce some of the best tasting and healthiest dehydrated organic macadamia nuts available on the Hawaiian Islands, and our coffee is ahhhhh...well... you'll have to taste this divine brew yourselves to see what we mean! We also invented and produce our own chocolate macadamia nut butters made with real dark and white Belgian chocolate and our own organic nuts. It is a delicacy not to be missed. We believe in an organic lifestyle as a basis for our teaching, both with kids and adults. Barney is Head Farmer and Orchard Master, and Elizabeth is an internationally bestselling author of three books on the Inkas of Peru. We are the Hawaii headquarters for the Wiraqocha Foundation for the Preservation of Indigenous Wisdom and offer programs on property.

Barney and Elizabeth your place is the bomb!

My family had a great time. My daughter could not get enough of talking with your sheep and your organic macadamia nuts are the best I have ever tasted!

Beautiful Setting

  • 3 of 5
We stayed here for three nights with four adults and five kids (ages 2-9). The house slept all of us very comfortably with plenty of beds for everyone. The setting on the farm is amazingly lush and beautiful. My kids loved walking around and watching the sheep, turkeys and other farm life. There were oranges and limes growing right outside the house and great avocados and macadamia nut products at the fruit stand on the property. The house is far enough away from the other buildings that it feels very private. We weren't there long enough to talk to the owners a lot, but they were nice and made sure we were okay. We enjoyed the black sand beach a couple of times as well as South Point and the very cute little town of Naalehu.

The only downside for me was that we did have cockroach confrontations every day. To be fair, the owners do mention this in the property description and we knew it going in. I understand that they don't spray chemicals on their organic farm. We were very diligent about putting food away and sweeping up crumbs, but it didn't seem to matter. I guess it just ended up bothering me more than I thought it would. We stayed in four different rental houses during our stay on the Big Island, and this was the only one with this problem.

Overall, great area if you like to get away from the touristy crowds. Nice house. Just some bugs. Mahalo!

Wonderful place and people

  • 5 of 5
I was privledged to stay here with friends. The house is beautiful and very clean and comfortable. It is just off the highway but is so private and out of mainstream yet so accessible that you have the luxury of peacefulness mixed with convenience . The owners are amazing people who made us feel so at home that one does not want to leave. I feel as if I have made friends with them forever and would be honored to have them visit me at my home. I would recommend this to anyone I know.

A great home at a great price!

  • 5 of 5
We are a group of friends who wanted a place to get away from the rush of the city. This home filled the bill admirably. It is located away from the tourist hells on a beautiful organic farm. How can you not enjoy wandering out on the lanai to pick your own breakfast grapefruit?!
The property was fully as described - clean and comfortable. And large enough to allow the 5 of us to enjoy time together or each find our own corner as we wished. The onsite fruit/macadamia stand was awesome! And the coffee....oh the coffee...we are all full on ka'a converts now!
Elizabeth and Barney were really helpful when it came to ideas for places to go, and really made us feel like family when it came to a place to watch the Super Bowl - we had the privilege of being asked to a neighborhood fundraiser - way more fun than an anonymous bar.
If you are looking for the ultimate luxurious spa getaway, this is not your spot. If you want somewhere convenient to great hiking and away from the crowds, this is a must see. I know which I prefer and we'll be back for certain.

All I can say is RUN, RUN, RUN, the other direction. Most horrifying experience for my family of 8, we made it through the night with little sleep, and we have never packed up so fast and ran from somewhere. Whatever you do, do NOT give the owner Elizebeth cash or check, she will refuse to give it back, or make excuses and still try to cash the check, and than text you threatening messages. Things were not honest with this rental what so ever. The house was filthy, and the bedding smelled as if it had not been washed in a few years, and smelled like other peoples filth, on top of the hot tub not working because they said they did not want to deal with it.Roaches were crawling out of the couches, kids beds, and the beds upstairs. I grew up on the Big Island and am well aware of all the little creatures, but for the price she asked per night we found a 5 star luxury home with a pool. PLEASE take our warning and run.

Owner's Response: Dear VRBO OWNERS AND MANAGERS BEWARE! I am sorry to say I had to learn this lesson the hard way. These guests did not inquire through the website but rather over the phone stating they were desperate for a home for their family of 8, having been displaced by the hurricane. Responding to their same day emergency request, I accepted their booking and trustingly allowed them to pay by check. I emailed the arrival instructions which gives details about the house, including drive times, that we are an organic orchard, and you WILL see bugs, including roaches. They insisted they were from Hawaii and were fine with bugs. I met them personally and repeated to them the exact drive times from Hilo to our rental and they appeared grateful, even stating that the drive was nothing to them and that "we drive that distance all the time." Once arrived, they stated the place was beautiful but really far, although I had already informed them the exact distance and drive time. The next day they then asked to get out of the agreement due to the distance and began making all manner of complaints including about the hottub which is not--and never has been--listed amongst the homes amenities. After spending the night and using every bed, they requested to stay only the three night minimum, and, as they were unhappy, I agreed. When I gave them the 3 night rate I never heard back from them and with a bad feeling in my gut, informed my husband who was on property. They had used every bed in the house and had already put a stop payment on their check. My husband, not someone to be trifled with, intercepted them in the driveway attempting to leave. They gave my husband "all the cash they had," which after paying the cleaning fee and stop payment bank fee, amounted to a free night stay for them. The next day we discovered they had stolen all the batteries out of all our electronics in the house. My husband has owned a professional cleaning company for 20 years and we clean thoroughly prior to every guest. We have many repeat guests whose reviews are posted here and who comment on the cleanliness of our rental. I directly and honestly told these guests that I found their behavior dishonorable, the truth of which they term "threatening." They undercut their own believability stating they found a 5 star hotel with a pool for 8 people for less than our clearly published rates. I feel sorry for these folks, yet I leave this as a cautionary tale to other vrbo owners and managers.

Great vacation, very nice hosts

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at the other rental house owned by Barney and Elizabeth. It was just perfect for our party of 4 adults and 3 little kids. The farm is perfect for the kids, they loved the sheep and turkeys, running around in the huge yard and also collecting and cracking open the mac nuts. Even though there is a couple of houses on their property, every one of them is still very private and secluded.
Barney and Elizabeth are super nice hosts, always helpful and giving us tips for beaches, restaurants, etc. We had an awesome time, and hopefully will be back soon! Thank you so much for a great vacation!
