Property Details

Updated: Jul 22, 2014
2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, Sleeps 6

CASA TRES PECES is set right on the beach in the heart of Cabo Matapalo point, one of the most magical destinations in Costa Rica, the Osa Peninsula. National Geographic calls it one of the most bio-diverse lowland rainforests left in the world.

This beautiful two story open air tropical style home sits facing East towards incredible sunrises on an elevated rock outcropping right on the beach, giving it a spectacular view where the Gulfo Dulce and the Pacific Ocean meet. With 2 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms it is the perfect getaway for 2 couples or a small family.

Following a grassy, stone trail in front of the house it is only steps to a secluded sandy cove beach that has incredible tide pools (at low tide) perfect for lounging in or taking the children.

A canopy tree monkey path runs right across the front of the house where you can watch four species of monkeys jump from branch to branch.

A Swiss Family Robinson-like experience in jungle luxury you will never forget. Enjoy the feeling of living in the rainforest with amenities. If you love nature and all of it’s wild beauty, this is the place for you. Here you will find an incredible opportunity to connect with nature in a way that is just not possible in many places. Life is brought back to the natural cycles of the sun, the moon and the tide. It is an incredible feeling to live in a house that functions independently on solar. Come and experience solar power, spring water and an amazing off the grid lifestyle.

Costa Rica jungle experience

  • 5 of 5
We stayed for a week in January and had a great time.

First, the animals. We saw spider monkeys, capuchin monkeys, macaws, coatimundi, blue morph butterflies, jesus christ lizards and green parrots. These were just in the back yard of the house! We also saw squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, (which we heard every morning) a sloth, iguanas, and many types of hawks and falcons on short walks down the road. We hiked up to the waterfalls one day where we also found several poison dart frogs. This is really a great place to just take it easy and enjoy nature.

The house was pretty much exactly what we expected from the descriptions given. No issues at all for us. The only thing I wish there had been 2 kayaks instead of just 1, so we could have gone for longer rides.

We ate at Martinas several times, good food, you'll pass it just before you turn off the main road just a short distance from the house. We really enjoyed the farmers market on Friday afternoon. I bought some fresh tuna to take back to the house to cook, it was delicious. I got some handmade wood bowls that were awsome also.

The roads definately call for a 4WD vehicle. Nothing extreme, just lots of rocks (smooth) and a couple stream crossings. I would also make sure you bring a flashlight for each person in your party. Bugs came out at night, so we'd get inside the mosquito netting covering the bed and play games.

I didn't get to do any surfing on this trip, but our neighbors went out every day. They said the surf beach was about a mile away and had some really long breaks they could ride forever.

Overall, I wouldn't hesitate staying here again if we ever make it back down to Costa Rica.

Open Air

  • 4 of 5
We spent six days here in March and it was hot every day, and often the breeze stopped after sunset, making the evenings warm too. Because the house is completely open, which makes it unique and a great experience, it also means there is nowhere to cool off except a cool shower.
We loved the architecture of the house, and I enjoyed the birds and other wildlife in the yard. I did complain, tongue in check, to Darren that near the end of our week, we still had not seen monkeys or toucans on the property, although we heard them often in the distance. I don't know what he did, but the next day, monkeys and toucans showed up! I also enjoyed watching dolphins fishing from my chair.
We did have an issue with no hot water in the upstairs shower, and the lack of hot water and drain stoppers in the kitchen concerned me about how previous renters cleaned their dishes but even that was not a major drawback. The property was easy to find with Darren's revised instructions, but the road does resemble a riverbed rather than a road in many parts.
One disappointment we had that our research did not show, was that we hoped to spend a day or two visiting Corcovado National Park. Recently, the rules have changed, and now you need to arrange a guide, a month in advance. Also, hiking into the park for a day is not practical. Therefore, one of the things we hoped to do while here did not materialize.
The place is not as isolated as I had expected. We could hear some rambunctious neighbors in the evenings, which was not a problem, but I had not expected this.

Owner's Response: Hi All,

I wanted to give some updated information regarding your recent review - the hot water in the upstairs shower is now working (I had to replace the hot water heater and order the part from San Jose). Regarding the new rules for Corcovado National Park: all visitors are now required to enter the park accompanied by a licensed guide, even for day trips. Our guests recently used a guide and the cost was $130.00 for an all-day guided tour, plus a $10 per person entrance fee. The entrance fee must be obtained at the MINEAT office in Puerto Jimenez, but the guide was able to purchase the entrance passes and meet the guests here in Cabo Matapalo before driving out to the park (i.e. our guests did not have to drive to Puerto Jimenez to obtain the park passes). Our guests were able to reserve the guide and get the day passes with only 24 hour notice, and entered the park the next day. If you wish to spend the night in the park, then yes, you would probably have to make your reservation (at least) a month in advance, as mentioned in this review. Best and pura vida!

Perfect for a jungle and beach getaway

  • 5 of 5
This house is exactly what we thought it would be when we chose it - unique, fun, open. The view and the location are perfect. Waking up to a picture perfect sunrise with the lively jungle sounds is a charming welcome to the day. My husband and 9 year old daughter and I stayed here for 10 days or so and found that everything on the property is carefully tended to by the caretakers. They will not invade your privacy as they are respectful about that but they also made sure they were available when we needed to ask questions.
Some of our favorite activities: the tree climb with Andy at Everyday Adventures, zip-lining, hiking to the waterfall that is close to the house (you can swim into the little pool that it falls into) and kayaking with Aventuras Tropicales. Other than that, swimming and watching the animals could occupy a full day. There are quite a few beaches around; each have something to offer. The beach right in front of the house plus one right around the corner are fun in different ways.
Other reviewers have said this, but I kind of ignored it, so I'll write it too - you do not need to bring many things. Keep it simple and you will be glad that you did. T-shirts, shorts, tank tops, flip-flops, water shoes and good shoes for hiking, plus a little bug spray and most definitely sun-screen. I brought a 3 oz container of Jungle Juice bug repellant and between the three of us, we only went through half of it as it was only necessary some nights.
Darren, the owner, is about as nice as anyone we have met in a long time. We throughly enjoyed getting to know him, plus renting from someone like him on a property like this made the vacation even better.

Awesome place, awesome country!!

  • 5 of 5
This place will help you get away from the world. Very peaceful and relaxing!

Great house in an awesome location. It sits between 2 great surfing beaches. You can also use the beach at the house at mid to low tide. Wear water shoes because there are a lot of round rocks to bump against as with all the beaches at the water line.

This house is really an open house. If you have privacy issues with your spouse or other guests you will lose it fast here. No doors or windows anywhere including bathrooms. House was well taken care of and only a couple small issues that were taken care of right away by the caretakers.

Monkeys, Macaws, birds and other strange animals everywhere. We sat on the back deck every sunset and watched the monkeys cross the property through the trees almost every night. The macaws also flew by everyday. The locals call them rainbow crows because they are loud. One night the howler monkeys hollered all night, awesome!

Pack flashlights, cameras, binoculars, sunscreen, swimsuits, flip flops, pair of shorts and t-shirts. You won't need much more than that. We totally over packed. Everything is laid back and casual.

Roads are rough!! Rent the bigger 4 wheel drive Toyota. Riding around in the Suzuki Jimmie was like sitting in a tin can rolling down a rocky mountain. Have bruises to prove it!

Take a tour with Andy at Everyday tours which is a quick walk down the road. He is very knowledgeable and entertaining. Also see Paul the bartender at Martina's (you will pass it on the way in). He also is very entertaining and the food was great. Nice little farmers market on Friday around 4:30 which kicks off the festivities for the night. If you go to town there is a great restaurant on backside of the landing strip on the water. See Jose Jiron at Marisqueria Corcovado Seafood. If they have the 2 or 4 person seafood dish special, get it. It was a ton of food for the price.

Last item- If you don't like the dark (6pm), sunrise directly on the master suite (6 am), quietness (other than animal noises), bugs (not bothering you, just around), hot weather, surf crashing on shore, friendly people and throwing your TP in the trash instead of the toilet this might not be your cup of tea.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the great review! I'm glad you guys enjoyed your time at our beautiful property. I just want to mention that we have thick vinyl blinds in the master bedroom that we need to drop sometimes in case of rain...but they also work wonders to block out the sunlight if there are mornings you prefer to sleep in :). Regarding the privacy of the downstairs bathroom, please note that there is a 7' wall all the way around the bathroom. You can not see anyone using this bathroom from downstairs, and upstairs, you would able to see someone in the shower from the waist up. The upstairs bathroom is completely private, and I would recommend using this bathroom to shower in if you are sensitive to this issue - or just communicate with your fellow guests and there really shouldn't be any issues. For both the visual aesthetic, and the shower experience itself, it seems much better to leave it as is, rather than box it all in and close it off. Best and pura vida!

Best House in Cabo Matapalo

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I stayed in Casa Tres Pesces for 4 days. This place blew us away with the incredible workmanship and attention to detail that the home offers. Pictures alone cannot justly show this place you must see and stay here for yourself. The wildlife around you leaves you speechless as each day you see a new species. The landscape that surrounds the house makes it feel like you are miles from anyone, lush and green. Darren was great answering all of our questions, even contacting us that day to make sure we were on our way without any problems. My wife and I have stayed in Hawaii, Mexico and other places in Costa Rica. This place is hands down a jewell, that no one heading to Cabo Matapalo should miss.

Jungle Paradise - a True Nature Experience

  • 5 of 5
We were 2 couples staying in the jungle house for 4 nights and WOW - it was an incredible experience!!!! The owner, Darrin, made the reservation process so easy - he was always quick to return my emails and helped to answer my many questions about our trip. The home itself is so creatively built and completely in line with nature & off the grid. We loved the tile work, swirling walls, tree trunks, and open air feel of the place. Having the ambience of waves crashing & wildlife was like a live meditation CD... it was the most relaxing part of our Costa Rica trip. The caretakers Victor & Gabriella were amazing - they were always there when we needed them and made sure to give us plenty of space and privacy. Victor took my brother fishing every day and caught a snapper which my brother (a chef) made into ceviche for all of us. Gabriella offered to hike with us to one of the local waterfalls which was absolutely mindblowing! We would have likely stopped at the 1st waterfall if it weren't for her guidance to continue until we reached the huge one at the end (you can swim too). She also had wonderful insights into the habitat and showed us macaws, monkeys, & various frogs.

If you love nature, you will love this home. We saw an abundance of wildlife every day - 3 different types of monkeys, macaws, toucans, iguanas, & more are all in your backyard. For more wildlife, just take a 5 minute walk towards Matapalo Beach. The beaches were pristine and felt so private to us - we only saw a few other people on our trip. There are plenty of great activities to do but we loved just hanging and being together at home.

We did all of our grocery shopping in Puerto Jiminez and found an adorable vegetable/fruit market on one of the side streets which was much more cost-efficient & fresher than the grocery stores. One thing to keep in mind when renting this home is that everything is open-air without doors, including the bathrooms, so make sure whoever you're traveling with, you know very well :)

It was a great bonding experience for us!!! We will definitely recommend this place to our friends and hope to come back soon. Thank you Darren, Victor, & Gabriella!
