Birdsong truly is PARADISE!!!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and just visited Costa Rica for the first time and we are so happy that we chose Birdsong as our place to stay.

First off, if you are looking for an amazing view of Arenal Volcano, Birdsong has it covered. The open concept interior of the Birds View Suite means that you can see the lake, volcano, and rainforest in one glance. The large sliding windows mean that you can hear the birds at 6am and the howler monkeys in the afternoon. We didn't mind waking up at 7am every day to get up and take advantage of our time in Costa Rica. It was nice that the chef came early so we could have breakfast with the morning sounds, and then head out for the day.

Our food at Birdsong was great as well. One night we had a local elderly couple come cook us dinner in the room. It was one of the best meals that we had in CR. They made a full plate of fish, veggies, rice, potatoes, and a mango dessert. Breakfast in the morning filled us up for the day, so we often were able to skip lunch. A previous reviewer commented how there is no oven in the suite. We honestly never even noticed. Most traditional CR food is cooked on a stove top and we were there to embrace the local cuisine.

Not only were the property and villa absolutly breathtaking, but the owner Allan was the perfect host. We are outgoing travellers and like to meet new people so we appreciated having coffee with Allan each morning to discuss the days activities. We also appreciated the opportunity to interact with the other visitors if we wanted. Allan was great about asking how much privacy we wanted, and respecting that. We were looking for something adventurous to do one day, and Allan mentioned the hike to Cerro Chato. Boy were we happy we did that. It was tough but the view is worth it!

Overall I was extremely pleased with our stay at Birdsong. The villa, view, and host were exactly as advertised on the website. The only disappointing part was having to leave after four days. But we'll be back!!

Beautiful view, but place not as described

  • 2 of 5
Based on the website description we were expecting a 2 bedroom house with a full kitchen (including oven). My family of 4 (including a 6 yr old and 4 month old) arrived to find it was a studio with kitchenette off to the side. The house is really 2 studio units, if you need 2 bedrooms in the same 'house' this rental is NOT for you. We had to put my 6 yr old on a mattress on the floor next to our bed and then put the crib on the other side. There was no place to put any clothes away so the space got VERY crowded and messy fast.

Based on the description we had also expected a full, modern kitchen. There was no oven, our first night only 1 burner on the stove worked (he had run out of gas so only the 1 electric burner worked), the sinks sputtered rust colored water (we were told the pipes burst earlier in the day and it did stop shortly after our arrival), and the fridge had so much stuff we could barely fit our own groceries in (several things were expired and there was a foul smell coming from inside the fridge). And there was no dishwasher.

The place was only sort of clean. Sheets and towels were all fresh and clean, but there was a lot of dust under the bed, in corners, etc and dishes in the cupboards were sometimes still dirty (appeared to have been washed by hand hastily).

Allan, the host, was nice but very forgetful. We had asked for a crib in the booking and he forgot to get it so had to drive to get it when we arrived (it was sort of clean). He suggested we get a guide when doing the rainforest sky walk and was nice enough to call to reserve but to confirm he said he would send an email, which he forgot to do, so they cancelled our guide reservation and no one was available for us when we arrived (something that would have made the experience much better).

The cook made nice breakfasts based on our reqests but he was clearly sick. He was coughing and sneezing as he was making everything and not washing his hands.

On the positive side, the views of the volcano, the lake and the rainforest were amazing. The location very convenient to hiking and exploring (you do need 4wd though). There was a nice cross breeze when you opened the windows and Allan had a good collection of information on local activities, board games and Internet.

Birdsong is appropriate for a couple looking to experience the Arenal area and have a bit of adventure but not a 4 person family that wants to cook their own meals in the evening.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. We apologize that your experience was not what you expected. In the description for Birdsong Villa, we describe that there are two suites available, each accommodating 2-4 people. We will do out best to make it clearer in the future so people understand what is offered in each suite.

We apologize that it took a bit of coordination to get you the crib. As a 68 year old retired host, sometimes things get forgotten but we always try to sort things out as quickly as possible.

The day of your arrival the water line broke up the road. It was unexpected and could not be avoided. When this type of issue occurs some dirt and small rocks can go in to the line and we did not have enough time to flush the lines before you arrived. You may recall that we ran the water together for 3 minutes, then it came out crystal clear, as it is 100% natural spring water.

We will do our best to describe the kitchen amenities more clearly. The Bird's View Suite has a 4 disc gas counter top range, full size fridge, microwave oven. The Garden View Suite has a range, mini fridge and microwave oven. Neither suite has a dishwasher or oven.

As far as gas goes, the entire town had no gas for this Spring break. It was unfortunate that the gas ran out on your first day, but the next day I drove 50km each way to pick up some new gas cylinders.

We are happy that you brought to our attention the cleaning of the suite. The cleaning staff have already been spoken to and will pay more attention to these details in the future.

People often come to Birdsong to get away from the hustle of their everyday lives, and we hope that they appreciate the beauty of Costa Rica, and can relax and enjoy themselves.

Amazing retreat

Birdsong villa is an amazing place to relax and recharge. One of the most beautiful locations I have stayed at in a long time. The house is secluded with stunning views throughout. The grounds are absolutely beautiful. Allan is extremely helpful in setting up any adventures away from the house that you could enjoy. He also does a great job of recommending restaurants and activities. The property is off the beaten path, but is well worth - I'd go twice is far if that meant another week at birdsong villa!

Once in a lifetime view, secluded location

  • 5 of 5
We stayed on the upper level of the house in mid April on recommendation
from the Nepenthe Hotel close by. The 2 day stay in the upper level of this house was one
of the highlights of our Costa Rica trip. The view from the upper level was once
in a lifetime for us. Everybody involved was helpful and friendly so a big thank
you from us!
Kind regards from Germany

Waking up to a view of the volcano and surrounding jungle was surreal! My husband and I had our morning coffee on the outside deck, you feel like you are totally secluded surrounded by the sounds of the jungle. Really awesome! Alan was a great help with information on the area and activities. I would recommend a 4 wheel drive as the roads are a bit of a challenge. The hot springs were great along with the hanging bridges. The walk to the waterfall on the property is also enjoyable. The duo who cooks at the house is amazing. The fish dinner was really good and the breakfast rocked (fantastic pancakes). If not renting the whole house rent the top floor the view is amazing!

Awesome views of volcano & lake; natural setting with beautiful flowers, birds, and Howler monkeys. Accommodations were great, including vistas from all glass living area, exterior shower and waterfall, and delicious chef-prepared breakfasts and dinners. Host was friendly and helpful with suggested activities and arrangements. This secluded villa is on a mountain side overlooking Arenal volcano and lake. Situated close to many attractions including zip lines, Arenal National Park, thermal spas, horseback riding, restaurants, and towns of El Castillo and La Fortuna.
