LAST MINUTE CANCELLATION! MARDI GRAS DATES ARE AVAILABLE!!

Come enjoy New Orleans like a local in MidCity, a favorite NOLA neighborhood located in what was known in the 19th century as the “back of town.” Two blocks from the streetcars on Canal Street and Carrollton, this home is just ten minutes from the French Quarter, the Fairgrounds, Bayou St. John, City Park, the famous cemeteries of New Orleans, and more.

This beautiful house was flooded during Katrina, but has been lovingly restored by its owners, who wanted to help make New Orleans whole again after the devastation of the storm. Outfitted for comfort and serenity, it is a welcome respite after wild abandon at Mardi Gras or Jazz Fest, French Quarter Festival, the VooDoo Experience or Essence Festival, and just exploring all the magical wonders this unique city has to offer.

PRIVATE HOT TUB! Clothing is optional as you enjoy the cozy round hot tub in our totally private courtyard. Whip up a delicious cocktail and have a bubbly soak, surrounded by lush tropical greenery gracing our new large deck in the back yard. You can go from watching the 'river of life' flow by from the front porch that overlooks the lively streets of New Orleans, to enjoying complete outdoor privacy in our tropical paradise in the back yard. And as you move from the front porch to the back yard you'll walk through the graceful rooms of this lovely 100-year-old house decorated in a colorful, eclectic style that lets you know you are in the fabulous and funky city of New Orleans. Nothing generic, suburban, or run-of-the-mill in this house, that's for sure!

When you're ready for some socializin', step around the corner to Finn McCool’s and have a beer, talk to the locals, meet some new people ... New Orleans folks are friendly! In the cool of the evening stroll over to Angelo Brocato’s on Carrollton Ave and delight in their wondrous pastries and Italian ice or gelato. Host a Sugar Bowl party in front of our 42' HD flat screen TV, then dance the night away to the Zydeco music at the Rock-N-Bowl, truly a NOLA experience. Or catch the streetcar on Canal and step right out onto Bourbon, Decatur or Frenchman Street for a night of festivities. For those in the know, Frenchman Street (in the Marigny) is the place to be for great live music. But MidCity has its share of live music going on every weekend too ... Banks St Bar & Grill, Chickie Wah Wah's (on Canal), and others.

Restaurants abound in MidCity and many are within an easy walk of three or four blocks. The Ruby Slipper (delicious breakfast and lunch), Mandina's (time-honored NOLA tradition), Mona's (Mediterranan fare and fabulous homemade pita bread), Juan's Flying Burrito (mmmm-mmmmm), Venezia (rumored to have been a Mafia hangout long ago), Wit's End (said to have hosted Brangelina once), Dosan's Noodle House, Five Happiness, and more. Rouse's grocery store is close by on Carrollton, and it is a New Orleans institution (great fried chicken, homemade Cajun sausage and boiled crawfish). So even if you're sans automobile, you'll be well-fed!

This house has three bedrooms, three baths, 14’ ceilings, original heart pine floors, a 6’ long claw foot bathtub in the master bath, new large walk-in shower, spacious kitchen with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, king-size four-poster bed, two queen beds, and two daybeds with trundles. It also features a large private deck/courtyard with a five-person hot tub. It’s perfect for a family getaway, a romantic honeymoon, a bachelor party, a reunion of old friends, a Festival experience … somehow magic happens in New Orleans and you will make memories to last a lifetime.

So come on down and experience The City That Care Forgot!

About the Owner

My husband and I purchased The House of Mirth in 2006, soon after Hurricane Katrina made her terrible mark on this historic and graceful old city. As a native of the Gulf Coast with many memories of New Orleans going back to my childhood, my heart was broken when I saw the complete devastation that the entire area suffered. We lived in Atlanta and from that far-away place I longed to help and be a part of the rebuilding of the city I love so much. When the opportunity came, we took the plunge and bought the gutted and damaged house. But her grace shone through the dulled and peeling paint, her foundation was strong, and all the beautiful cypress woodwork survived the rising waters.

It took us two solid years to bring the house to its present state, working in hot humid conditions with no electricity, no water at first, and no stores or restaurants open. It was a happy day when the Home Depot on Carrollton opened, and once the nearby grocery store got up and running, things felt a little more normal. With every trip down from Atlanta we saw New Orleans slowly come back, debris disappearing, houses being repaired, red lights working again, electricity back on.

We parked a small RV out front and that's where we stayed when we were down from Atlanta working. Many loving hands helped repair and renovate the house, including family and friends. When we got running water it was a joyous day, and when the electricity was restored, oh boy did we celebrate! That meant lights and fans and radios and electric tools to make our work a little easier.

So The House of Mirth is a labor of love and we hope you will enjoy her lovely amenities and imagine the many people who have lived within her walls over the past 100 years. I think they would approve of how she looks today and welcome visitors who come to discover the quirky, mysterious and delightful place that is New Orleans.

Thank you so much for providing such a wonderful place to call "home" this week. We had a blast working with Habitat for Humanity and the hot tub was great after a long day's work. Left a few little trinkets of our own :) And I think I danced myself ragged on Frenchmen St! We will be back!

Branching out in NOLA!

  • 5 of 5
We love this city!! We have been to New Orleans many, many times but this was our first extended stay in Mid-City. Amazing! Great neighborhood feel, cool bars/restaurants nearby, and a super easy streetcar ride to the FQ, etc.
This house is great! Lots of space and a great back deck! Comfortable, private bedrooms, well stocked kitchen, and a nice front porch, too.
We were a party of six and we had a number of friends/family members come by to visit. Plenty of room for everyone!
We will be back!

House of Mirth

  • 5 of 5
Six of us recently stayed at the House of Mirth for a New Orleans bachelor weekend. We couldn't have picked a better place. The house was in a fantastic location and just a 10 minute ($1.25) street car ride to the French quarter. The neighborhood was very unique with all of the amenities and excellent restaurants nearby (Katie's was amazing). Not once did we feel unsafe. Elizabeth (owner) was very helpful and provided us with some excellent insight on the surrounding area. Everything about the house was exactly as described. Needless to say " The House of Mirth exceeded our expectations "!

Excellent stay at the House of Mirth

  • 5 of 5
We were lucky enough to find the House of Mirth for our trip to New Orleans. Our group consisted of 9 guys in their late 20s, early 30s visiting the city for an extended bachelor weekend. The house was perfect for us and could have slept even more if necessary. The house was clean and very well kept. There were 3 bathrooms and 2 showers (3 if you count the one outside by the hot tub), which was plenty. The fully functional kitchen was nice, but we rarely used it as we ate out most of the time. Katie's which is about 3 blocks away had PHENOMENAL food. We made multiple visit to this corner neighborhood restaurant and had different meals each time, but no one was ever disappointed (which is tough to do). Go! Get the Oysters Slessinger! Just do it and thank me later. The location of the house was great. It's in mid-city, which is out of the frat party of bourbon street, but is 2 blocks away from the street car and canal street. The street cars come every 10-15 minutes and for $3 you can ride all day and it will take you right downtown/bourbon or pretty much anywhere else. We are already hoping to make a less party-centric trip back to NOLA and I will be sure to see if the House of Mirth is available.

PERFECT NOLA VACATION

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I travelled to New Orleans this past March 8, 2014 - March 15, 2014, along with 5 of our friends. The main purpose of our trip was to attend a concert at The Smoothie King Centre. Secondly, we wanted to take part in whatever sights, sounds and debauchery that New Orleans had to offer, while still having a place to come back and relax when we needed a breather. This place was perfect. From outside to inside it was full of character, with eclectic décor and vibrant colors. More importantly, there was a TON of space for us all enjoy ourselves, 3 big bedrooms, 3 big bathrooms, 2 dens etc etc.., TV's everywhere (Many TV stations, as promised...!), HOT TUB, (that worked properly...!) We found that everything that we were told would be there was there, and worked properly, not a single problem. We felt safe in the neighborhood, we were ten-minute cab or trolley ride from Bourbon St & The French Quarter, "The Ruby Slipper" (a 2 minute walk down the road) served up probably some of the best breakfast our crew had ever had the pleasure of enjoying. Elizabeth was a pleasure to deal with. If we have the privilege of returning, we wouldn't stay anywhere else, we loved the city of New Orleans and The House of Mirth equally.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your glowing review, Adam! I am very pleased and happy that you and your family enjoyed the beautiful city of New Orleans and our house that was so lovingly restored after Hurricane Katrina. I wanted the house to have a colorful, eclectic feel, reflecting a bit of what New Orleans is all about. I would love to have you and your friends or family back again at any time.

Great place for family vacation

  • 5 of 5
My family visited New Orleans for a long weekend and we were all very pleased with our stay here. The house was very clean, spacious, and in a great location. The back porch is a great place to hang out. The house was out of the noise of the French Quarter, but the Quarter was still easily accessible using the Canal St. streetcar line, which was only a couple minute walk away from the house. The surrounding neighborhood is also cool, with several restaurants within walking distance. Would definitely consider staying here again in the future.
