Tranquil Surroundings in a nationally and locally designated historic district - Old Seminole Heights. 'Erehwon Retreat.' is the perfect short stay. You will find exacting cleaning standards with a clear focus on the Arts and Craft period of the 1920's. This translates to a very peaceful visit. Everything is beautifully arranged; colorful, subtle, and uplifting. The cottage and neighborhood is perfect for a get-away.

We select Sunday as the turn over day for the cottage in order to link with the Royal Caribbean 'Brilliance' and Carnival 'Paradise' which maintain a yearly arrival and departure in the Port of Tampa.

You have easy access to the city attractions including museums (3 miles) and restaurants, Yankee spring training. Tampa Ship Terminal (5 miles) and the Tampa Convention Center (7 miles), as well as Central Florida tourist interests (10 minutes to Busch Gardens, 30 mins to Bok Tower Gardens or Ft. Desoto Beach, 75 mins to Sarasota, 90 to Disney or Winter Park), 2 hours to Cape Canaveral.

Our Cottage: We are your refuge, an area for bird watchers, nature lovers, beach days and Central Florida's famous fresh water blue holes. It's a pleasant throwback to where people grew up, knew their neighbors, sat on their front porch and everybody talked to everybody else. Come, stay awhile and enjoy.

Pack Light: We have a coffee bean grinder, French Press pot in the event you don't want to take a four block walk to Starbucks. Pur water filter at kitchen sink and check out the sundries page on website for all that comes with the cottage. You'll find everything from spices to maple syrup, toaster, pots and pans and pot holders, plus orange juice, half and half cream, milk and cereal to get you started, Publix is just a four blocks away for grocery needs. Our turnover day is Sunday, timed for the convenient weekly arrival and departure of cruise ships - Carnival Legend, Norwegian Cruise Line Dawn, and the Ryndam.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I was intrigued by the photos and description of the property when I booked the stay, and was wonderfully thrilled when I arrived and personally saw the cottage. It is just perfect for a quiet get away.

I felt like I was on my own little island, with supplies stocked before I arrived, and info for me to peruse to find things to do and places to go, if I was interested.

Henry is right around if one needs anything (directions, conversation, ideas, etc), but gives one their space. I was especially pleased with the info about massage, and enjoyed Marie's attention indeed, from our conversation on the phone, thru trying to set me up with an appt,, to the actual massage. She is a gem.

I did attend my sister's wedding in St Pete, and reception in Lakeland, and rather looked forward to my home away from home to relax in after the festivities.

Henry is a very personable, thorough, & efficient host, and I will be glad to return another time.

Don't pass this up; it is darling!

This cottage in Tampa is a very good spot to be. This is a quiet place in a quiet neighborhoods. This is small but confortable and Henry will help you enjoy it with is repertory of place to visit. We rent bicycle, went to the beach, went to Bush Garden, to the Amelie Arena and to many many parks just in a week. The grocey store is near by ...easy walk. Perfect! Thanks for the week!

A cozy cottage!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I chose Henry's cottage when I was relocating to Tampa and we were between homes. The cottage was a perfect transition home for us, giving me a comfortable home base to discover the neighborhood and Tampa while allowing my husband a familiar commute to work. I’m only sorry that I did not get to have more conversations with Thomas (the cat)!

The cottage is very clean and set up with all of the basics you might need for a temporary stay. The kitchen is conveniently set up with all sorts of basic ingredients, spices, etc. making it very easy to prepare simple meals.

Seminole Heights is a great neighborhood base for any type of traveler - it's easy to get around Tampa, but even easier to stay in the neighborhood and try all of the great restaurants, bars and coffee shops in the area. I especially loved walking around the neighborhood and looking at the restored bungalows.

I will be sure to direct all of my relatives (who are threatening to visit) to your home!

Owner's Response: Colleen you and Alon are the fifth couple to use Erehwon Retreat as part of academic, medical or executive transfers. The best is you are staying in our historic neighborhood. We've been very busy since you left with tree trimming and landscape maintenance preparing for a very busy winter season. Thanks for your review.

Quaint and Convenient Cottage

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I spent a week at the Erehwon Retreat located in the heart of the historic Seminole Heights. Surrounded by early twentieth century bungalows, many of which were beautifully redone, we walked the peaceful few blocks to Starbucks every morning. We intentionally located ourselves within a neighborhood as house hunting was the priority of our visit. This quaint and beautifully appointed cottage served as a very convenient home base with I-275 within a 3-minute drive while downtown Tampa was just a short distance away. Although petite, the cottage contained everything one needs for a comfortable stay. Henry was very kind and accommodating. I would definitely recommend the Erehwon Retreat for your next stay in Tampa.

Owner's Response: Jackie, Enjoyed having you with us. Let me know when you settle in, we do a former guest, now Metro homeowner Italian wine tasting as we near Thanksgiving. A time for thanks to all our guests and a time to introduce you to others who learned during their stay that Florida is so much MORE than “the prize” for a life well lived somewhere else.

Great place to stay with a wonderful host!

  • 5 of 5
A lovely place to stay - Very private, charming and clean with everything you need to cook or relax. I was in town for surgery and wanted a place to hid out for recovery yet one that was centrally located for ease of access to my doctor. The cottage fit the bill and then some. My husband and I spent almost three weeks here and loved it. Located on a quiet side street within walking distance of restaurants and Starbucks, it was also an easy drive to the doctor as well as shopping and movies.

Henry is a host extrodinaire. While I was hiding out recovering, he was kind enough to bring over a DVD series he thought we might enjoy watching. He is never intrusive but is there to help out with information or just chat if you want. He knew I didn't want to go out in public so he gave us a very nice driving tour to experience the area. Thank you Henry!

Wish I would have had a quicker recovery and more time to explore the area, but if we get back that way again, we'll definitely look to you for lodging. If this cottage is available don't hesitate to book it. You will not be disappointed.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your lovely review. It's very special to receive accolades regarding the historic restoration of our properties - but a deep honor to receive attention for what seemed an obvious question when conceiving our plan for Erehwon -“why should vacationers sacrifice the warm, welcoming feeling that greets them at home when they vacation?”

From the Owner

During my childhood our family lived in a Bungalow on S. Las Robles Ave in Pasadena, CA. Later we moved to an apartment building in New York City overlooking Central Park. My late mother reminded me that I always talked of the Bungalow and encouraged me to consider restoring one at some point in my life. Mothers always know best.

From the Owner

Erehwon Retreat is landscaped with native plants which have been growing in Florida for thousands of years without human intervention. We are committed to providing the natural food, shelter, and nesting plants of local wildlife. Visiting in fall and spring, you will see hundreds of birds, butterflies, and a wide variety of crucially important insect pollinators looking for our native plants for predictable sources of nectar, berries, insects and firm branches in which to hide their nests.
