Engine 24 French Quarter Firehouse...a Unique Vacation Home!

Updated: Sep 9, 2014
House, 7 Bedrooms, 7 Baths, (Sleeps 14)

One of New Orleans' most unique vacation lodging properties: the Engine 24 French Quarter Firehouse... one of the few VRBO properties that is licensed by the City of New Orleans for short-term rentals! Stay in an authentic historic firehouse while enjoying the modern amenities of this renovated gem. Much of the furniture was updated in November 2012, too!

We are located in the heart of the Faubourg Marigny, considered by travel magazines to be one of America's hot neighborhoods. Next door is the French Quarter, one of the most historic and charming areas anywhere. And to the other side is the hip, funky Bywater, a neighborhood which features great local eateries and bars.

Our guest house is a restored fire station designed to function as a home away from home for tourists and locals alike to come and enjoy the vibrant culture that is New Orleans. Formerly, this historic building housed Engine 24 of the New Orleans Fire Department! Local architect William Sonner purchased and renovated the Firehouse in the 2000s and it's now one of the city's most popular vacation rentals!

The Firehouse has 7 bedrooms and 7 baths, made up of the downstairs MAIN FLOOR (sleeps 10) and the LUXURY PENTHOUSE (sleeps 4). The Main Floor is perfect for larger groups, family gatherings, etc. while the Penthouse is great for the VIPs of the group as well as a great place to congregate.

The Firehouse has two large private living areas and a newly renovated New Orleans courtyard with fountain, grill, outdoor seating and more. The Firehouse is not available for functions, weddings, birthdays or any other special event. It is strictly a lodging facility.

Please note: The Firehouse is a very popular building and usually books weeks or months in advance. We're often in phone or email contact with multiple groups for the same dates. The first party to initiate payment or provide proper credit will enter into a reservation with us! Check availability in real-time, any time at https://v2.reservationkey.com/837/Engine24/

What a great find. Cool, funky (in a good way), clean and full of character and charm. Our group of 14 guys had so much fun hanging out and celebrating our friend Brad's upcoming wedding. Low-key bachelor party with lots of quality time spent with friends. Two guys are deploying to Afghanistan next month so it was especially great to have time with them! The location not too far from Frenchmen Street is great and the French Quarter is close too. Be sure to check out Mimi's bar, one block away. Good music (but no DJ any longer) and interesting people-watching!

Excellent Venue for a Large Group

  • 5 of 5
Our group of 14 loved our stay at the firehouse! We had every room full - including the penthouse - and at no point did we feel overcrowded. Each couple had their own space to relax, and the common areas were plenty large enough for the whole group to hang out together. Our friends absolutely loved the accommodations, and offered many compliments to the decor and layout. The firehouse had everything we were looking for - historic New Orleans charm, plenty of space, and walking distance to most attractions. Frenchman Street was our favorite place to visit - it's about a 10 min walk. Bourbon Street and the French Quarter took about 20 min. Martha and the team were easy to work with, and we'd gladly reserve a repeat stay with them in the future.

We have stayed twice at the Firehouse now and we just love it. We have a group of 10 guys and the 7 bedrooms give us plenty of room to spread out. There are two living rooms (the one upstairs is usually the one everyone congregates in) and a nice kitchen. Courtyard is nice if not too hot outside, but half of it is covered now. This is new. The Firehouse is not a luxury hotel but is a cool, interesting place to stay in an interesting city. We hope to be back in 2015.

needs lots of TLC

  • 2 of 5
Nine of us stayed for a week in April. The Firehouse is a beautiful charming place in a great spot but really needs and deserves lots of TLC. Our room in the courtyard had lots of furry mould over the bedroom wall which suffered from rising damp, the curtains were badly torn and stained, the blanket on the bed was stained and had a large hole. The courtyard pond was in dire need of a clean and had an empty drink bottle floating in it on our arrival. The kitchen didn't have a kettle -(is this an Australian basic requirement?!). Another room also had stained curtains. The room next to us had problems with the plumbing, with only cold water for showering.
It is so sad to see such a lovely place not getting the attention it needs to be properly maintained.
Also, only "greeting" is a laminated red sheet warning that if the neighbours complain about noise, we will be thrown out -obviously some bad experiences with previous tenants, but not very welcoming!
All this information was sent to the manager who confirmed the poor state of the building but was unable to get the owners to respond with any improvements.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying with us for for your comments, albeit after-the-fact. We've already taken care of some of the items mentioned (the "furry mold" in bathroom was hard-to-reach dust) and are purchasing some new linens to replace sheets and blankets which are unsightly. No one likes stains, even if the items are clean, and we understand that! We've also ordered a new pump for the fountain and hope to get it back in tip-top shape as soon as possible.

Most American properties don't have "kettles" but we can pick one up. Not a problem!

We're also sorry that the signage offended you although with some folks, a gentle reminder is indeed necessary. We are in the middle of a historic neighborhood and groups of 10-14 people can get a bit too rambunctious at times! We love our neighbors and want to make sure they are happy along with our guests!

In closing, we would like to add that "pictures don't do this place justice" is the response we hear most often. Although your review focused on a few small issues, I assume you were pleased overall with the Firehouse's wonderful architecture, location, and "vibe." Thanks again for staying with us and for visiting New Orleans.

One of those places you want to keep a secret.....

  • 5 of 5
The 6 brothers and sisters, with spouses, have found that perfect mix in a place for togetherness and privacy. We 12 came for a double 50th birthday party to one of our favorite places, joined by another 14 family and friends that found B&B's nearby, and had another great time in the city and at Engine 24 Firehouse. The Polar Vortex also joined us which made for a bump or two that were handled with aplomb by the owners and booking agent. This is a city that worries about heat and humidity not sub-freezing temperatures, so finding space heaters for the couple of bedrooms that needed them, certainly took a much appreciated and diligent tri-county search.
New Orleans at 30 degrees still beats the -6 back home!
A perfect place for a large group, in a great neighborhood, and a short walk to the Quarter.
A big thanks to the owners and the booking agent for everything, including the birthday libations and more. We'll be back.

Perfect group vacation rental!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I rented the Firehouse over the weekend of our wedding. Our wedding venue was in the French Quarter and we wanted to stay close, but not TOO close. Before I moved to Los Angeles, I lived in New Orleans for years, and know the area well. From both a local and a tourist stand point, the Firehouse is the perfect location. It's just a 10 minute walk to Frenchman or the Quarter, no car necessary. And just a quick drive to anywhere else in the city you need to go. Our guests who had never been to New Orleans went crazy for it and have all vowed to rent it again in the future. Our guests ranged in age from 73 to 30, and they all loved the space equally. There was plenty of room for everyone and a perfect space upstairs for group dinners and socializing. Management was personable, helpful, and quick with email responses. Thank you John and Martha!! The Firehouse was a crucial part of making our wedding weekend a HUGE success!

Amenities

From the Owner

The Marigny is such an interesting neighborhood on its own, with great restaurants, clubs, coffee shops, etc. Fantasic 1800s architecture everywhere, too! And of course, the French Quarter is just a few blocks away.
