Engine 24 French Quarter Firehouse...a Unique Vacation Home!

Engine 24 French Quarter Firehouse...a Unique Vacation Home!

Overview

Property Details

Updated: Nov 15, 2014
House, 7 Bedrooms, 7 Baths, (Sleeps 14)

One of New Orleans' most unique vacation lodging properties: the Engine 24 French Quarter Firehouse... one of the few VRBO properties that is licensed by the City of New Orleans for short-term rentals! Stay in an authentic historic firehouse while enjoying the modern amenities of this renovated gem. Much of the furniture was updated in November 2012, too!

We are located in the heart of the Faubourg Marigny, considered by travel magazines to be one of America's hot neighborhoods. Next door is the French Quarter, one of the most historic and charming areas anywhere. And to the other side is the hip, funky Bywater, a neighborhood which features great local eateries and bars.

Our guest house is a restored fire station designed to function as a home away from home for tourists and locals alike to come and enjoy the vibrant culture that is New Orleans. Formerly, this historic building housed Engine 24 of the New Orleans Fire Department! Local architect William Sonner purchased and renovated the Firehouse in the 2000s and it's now one of the city's most popular vacation rentals!

The Firehouse has 7 bedrooms and 7 baths, made up of the downstairs MAIN FLOOR (sleeps 10) and the LUXURY PENTHOUSE (sleeps 4). The Main Floor is perfect for larger groups, family gatherings, etc. while the Penthouse is great for the VIPs of the group as well as a great place to congregate.

The Firehouse has two large private living areas and a newly renovated New Orleans courtyard with fountain, grill, outdoor seating and more. The Firehouse is primarily a lodging facility. Any special events, parties, receptions, etc. must be agreed to by the facility manager and extra fee(s) may apply.

Please note: The Firehouse is a very popular building and usually books weeks or months in advance. We're often in phone or email contact with multiple groups for the same dates. The first party to initiate payment or provide proper credit will enter into a reservation with us! Check availability in real-time, any time at https://v2.reservationkey.com/837/Engine24/

About the Owner

The Firehouse is owned by a successful local architect (who oversaw the renovation!) and a guy who owns/operates an upscale home/lifestyle store in swanky Old Metairie, a N.O. suburb.

What a great find. Cool, funky (in a good way), clean and full of character and charm. Our group of 14 guys had so much fun hanging out and celebrating our friend Brad's upcoming wedding. Low-key bachelor party with lots of quality time spent with friends. Two guys are deploying to Afghanistan next month so it was especially great to have time with them! The location not too far from Frenchmen Street is great and the French Quarter is close too. Be sure to check out Mimi's bar, one block away. Good music (but no DJ any longer) and interesting people-watching!

We had a great time

  • 4 of 5
We hosted 14 guests for my son's wedding. He and his wife live a few blocks away in the Bywater. All our events -- the rehearsal dinner, the wedding and the reception -- were within easy walking distance. The arrangement was exceptionally convenient, and we particularly enjoyed sharing breakfasts and having everybody close by.

There are plenty of good restaurants in the neighborhood and when we wanted to go to the Quarter or elsewhere, we had no difficulty getting cabs to show up promptly after we called.

Among the questions I had before I saw the place concerned the size and arrangement of the rooms. All of them turned out to be reasonably roomy and have an adequate ensuite bath. Three of them have a loft with a queen bed up a circular staircase and a pull-out sofa on the lower level.

I would note that it is almost impossible to avoid climbing lots of stairs, and we had two older guests who had some trouble. Fortunately, there are two rooms that can be reached without climbing more than a couple of steps, but reaching the large upstairs living room and kitchen requires considerable climbing. This is NOT a handicap friendly facility.

It also isn't a luxury hotel -- it could stand a little love in the way of paint, soap and water, new linens and a few replacement dishes -- lots of cracks and and no two cups matched. The sofa in the upstairs living room smells of sweat and has a big rip that somebody repaired with duct tape. There's not a single outlet in the larger upstairs suite's bathroom. The fountain in the courtyard stinks and needs to be scrubbed and the pump needs to be replaced.

Nothing fatal, just stuff that's hard to totally overlook. Overall, the conviviality and convenience made up for the firehouse's shortcomings, and I wouldn't hesitate to book it again for another large family or close friend get together.

I just want to say how impressed we were with Engine 24. The location was perfect, and for our group of 14, I can't imagine a better venue. The occasion was my wife's 50th birthday, and our guests included a film director from Los Angeles, a DA from Evansburg, a CEO of a pharmacutical device company, and a senior oil executive from Calgary. And everyone raved about the lodgings, and the amenities provided. Between the convenient courtyard for the smokers in the crowd, to the full kitchen for the chefs and snack makers, everyone was fully satisfied and will keep Engine 24 on our list of places to repeat.

Thanks again and hope to see you again soon.

Excellent Venue for a Large Group

  • 5 of 5
Our group of 14 loved our stay at the firehouse! We had every room full - including the penthouse - and at no point did we feel overcrowded. Each couple had their own space to relax, and the common areas were plenty large enough for the whole group to hang out together. Our friends absolutely loved the accommodations, and offered many compliments to the decor and layout. The firehouse had everything we were looking for - historic New Orleans charm, plenty of space, and walking distance to most attractions. Frenchman Street was our favorite place to visit - it's about a 10 min walk. Bourbon Street and the French Quarter took about 20 min. Martha and the team were easy to work with, and we'd gladly reserve a repeat stay with them in the future.

We have stayed twice at the Firehouse now and we just love it. We have a group of 10 guys and the 7 bedrooms give us plenty of room to spread out. There are two living rooms (the one upstairs is usually the one everyone congregates in) and a nice kitchen. Courtyard is nice if not too hot outside, but half of it is covered now. This is new. The Firehouse is not a luxury hotel but is a cool, interesting place to stay in an interesting city. We hope to be back in 2015.

needs lots of TLC

  • 2 of 5
Nine of us stayed for a week in April. The Firehouse is a beautiful charming place in a great spot but really needs and deserves lots of TLC. Our room in the courtyard had lots of furry mould over the bedroom wall which suffered from rising damp, the curtains were badly torn and stained, the blanket on the bed was stained and had a large hole. The courtyard pond was in dire need of a clean and had an empty drink bottle floating in it on our arrival. The kitchen didn't have a kettle -(is this an Australian basic requirement?!). Another room also had stained curtains. The room next to us had problems with the plumbing, with only cold water for showering.
It is so sad to see such a lovely place not getting the attention it needs to be properly maintained.
Also, only "greeting" is a laminated red sheet warning that if the neighbours complain about noise, we will be thrown out -obviously some bad experiences with previous tenants, but not very welcoming!
All this information was sent to the manager who confirmed the poor state of the building but was unable to get the owners to respond with any improvements.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying with us for for your comments, albeit after-the-fact. We've already taken care of some of the items mentioned (the "furry mold" in bathroom was hard-to-reach dust) and are purchasing some new linens to replace sheets and blankets which are unsightly. No one likes stains, even if the items are clean, and we understand that! We've also ordered a new pump for the fountain and hope to get it back in tip-top shape as soon as possible.

Most American properties don't have "kettles" but we can pick one up. Not a problem!

We're also sorry that the signage offended you although with some folks, a gentle reminder is indeed necessary. We are in the middle of a historic neighborhood and groups of 10-14 people can get a bit too rambunctious at times! We love our neighbors and want to make sure they are happy along with our guests!

In closing, we would like to add that "pictures don't do this place justice" is the response we hear most often. Although your review focused on a few small issues, I assume you were pleased overall with the Firehouse's wonderful architecture, location, and "vibe." Thanks again for staying with us and for visiting New Orleans.

Amenities

From the Owner

The Marigny is such an interesting neighborhood on its own, with great restaurants, clubs, coffee shops, etc. Fantasic 1800s architecture everywhere, too! And of course, the French Quarter is just a few blocks away.
