Victorian Cottage in Beautiful Mt. Gretna

For those of you unfamiliar with Mt. Gretna, it is a storybook lake community near to Hershey, Pennsylvania. The town has a world-renown summer theater, an equally famous concert series, and is host to one of the best art shows of the summer.

The town is a tightly nestled group of Victorian homes located adjacent to a beautiful sand bottom lake. More than anything, the Mt. Gretna is a place to unwind, strolling the tree-lined streets, sitting on the beach by the lake, or taking advantage of the many benches built around the town and simply stopping. Next to the town is a state park, perfect for longer hiking adventures. As mentioned above, the house is also a short 15 minute ride to the town of Hershey, which hosts its own long list of attractions, from the chocolate factory, to the amusement park, to the quaint tree-lined streets of the town that Milton Hershey built for his employees.

Thistle Dew (named by the prior owner, apparently after much searching for just the right home, when she told her husband -- 'This Will Do') was built in the late 1800's but has been recently and very tastefully updated. The first floor features a beautiful screened-in porch (porches are THE thing in Mt. Gretna), a comfortable living room with fireplace, a dining area, a full kitchen with breakfast nook. The second floor has four bedrooms, and two beautiful full baths. Every space and detail in the house says the same thing -- stop, sit, and unwind.

About the Owner

At Poohbiscuit Farm Historic Vacation Rentals (, we are trying to define a new vacation experience. We are all products of the 1980's when Bed & Breakfasts were all the rage. We loved them (and still do) but know that we also need vacations where you are not hanging out with other people for all that long, as charming as they may be. But we also hate the coldness of hotels or sparsely furnished vacation rentals where they take your credit card over the phone and leave you the key under the mat. We felt there was a nice in between.

Hopefully that is us. Over the years, we have assembled a collection of historic homes in Central Pennsylvania. We have lovingly restored them, lived in many of them, and have been unable to sell a one because they were our babies -- yes, we understand that is a problem. The homes are located in some of the finest vacation areas in Central Pennsylvania, from the Gettysburg Battlefield (yes, on the battlefield), to the farm country of Lancaster County, to the quiet streets of Lititz, PA, home of the Wilbur Chocolate Factory. Like a Bed and Breakfast, each home is exquisitely decorated, and we greet you when you arrive with cookies, soda, wine, scotch, gin -- you name it. Unlike a Bed and Breakfast, however, we then disappear, leaving you to enjoy the entire home for your stay. That said, we are readily available by phone or text if you need anything.

We also think spending time steeped in history is not a bad way to spend a vacation, so long as you have internet access. (We are not Neanderthals.) So whether it is retracing the path of Pickett's charge, visiting the longest running farm market in the US in Lancaster, or walking the tree-covered streets of Mt. Gretna, gaining some sense of where we have been we think is a great way for a vacation to help you decide where you may want to go.

Spring Break 2015

  • 5 of 5
My family stayed there over spring break, using it as a central location to visit Hershey Park, Gettysburg and even a quick day trip into Baltimore. We loved it! We have a family of 5 and had room for all of us to get together to eat, play board games, watch TV and even enjoy the fireplace (it was chilly outside the first day we were there)! The rooms upstairs were charming and my kids loved them. They each found little nooks and crannies to call their own. The kitchen was great with lots of modern touches. We would recommend this to other families looking for an affordable, clean, fun place to stay!

Very comfortable house with an astoundingly spacious front porch, well equipped kitchen. We had 11 people for dinner one night, and had ample room in the dining room for all.It is a very snug house, with no need to turn on the heat in mid-October.The beds are very comfortable, and the 2 full baths are a big plus. This is our boys weekend out to the Hershey car show, and as we have a number of guys in our group of 5 who like to cook, this the perfect venue.Everybody in the listing company was great, and we would love to come again..

Second visit & love this place!

Second visit & love this place!

We stayed at Thistledew last October and loved it so much, we wanted to return to experience both the cottage and Mt. Gretna, during the summer. The day we arrived was quite warm and humid. I'm a fair weather kind of gal and was wondering if I would be missing my central air conditioning. No worries, the cottage was extremely comfortable - numerous ceiling fans and window ac units had already been turned on. Lights and music playing also welcomed us.

During our second visit, we really got to take advantage of the comfortable, large screened in porch. We spent most of our time on the porch (more ceiling fans!) - reading, enjoying the swing, playing games, listening to music, eating - plenty of room at the table on the porch for our group of 6.

We used the large clean gas grill on this visit. The property manager Debbie, had a full tank of propane ready to go. The management (Debbie & Mike) are just awesome to work with. Accessible and very accommodating, but not intrusive. Debbie texted us part way through our stay to see if we were enjoying our visit or needed anything. The day we arrived back home, we realized my husband left some prescription meds at the cottage. I contacted Debbie and she was happy to put them in the mail to us.

Thistledew has the perfect combination of modern amenities and comforts (yay for dishwasher!), but with the charm of yesteryear. In addition to the cottage being very clean and well maintained, it's well stocked with items you may have forgotten, but wished you brought. We plan on visiting again, hopefully in the winter to enjoy the large stone fireplace!

Charming cottage with modern ammenities

We selected this property in part because of the great pictures and reviews online. The house was even better than we had expected. We came with a group of 6 adults and 1 infant, and there was plenty of space for us all. The kitchen had everything that we needed and we ended up cooking quite a bit. Also, we enjoyed the streaming radio players throughout the house, fireplace, and huge porch. We were a bit early in the season and so we did not find very much to do in the surrounding areas (Hershey was still closed for the season), but we were glad to just hang out at our lovely house. Also, management was very easy to work with and accommodating.

This cottage is a gem! Very clean, comfortable beds, enough hot water for several people to take back-to-back showers, well stocked with having to run to convenience store for forgotten items. The rental process from start to finish was a breeze. Joann & Debbie were great in responding to any request. Thoughtful attention to details....all you have to do is show up & enjoy!

From the Owner

Mt. Gretna may be one of the most idyllic areas of Pennsylvania. The cottages are tucked into the woods, each built on what were originally campsites. My wife and I began coming here a number of years ago for the Art Show and fell in love with the area. Purchasing a home here is the fulfillment of a long term dream.
