Retreat House – Fort Screven – Delightfully Private

Start your day with a sunrise Beach walk and spend the afternoon in Historic Savannah. The “Villa of St Francis” is once again open for quietude, intrigue and charm. This all wood home was originally 2 military properties/ buildings that became a “Retreat House” in old Fort Screven. The current owners have artfully restored and married the two buildings to create a unique 3BR/ 2 BA- “step into the past experience”.

Our “North Beach” and “Ft. Screven” location takes you away from the “Summer-Crowds” with all of the noise and traffic. Park the cars and walk to the closest beach - it’s a short 350 yards and the beach is handicap accessible - & you don’t have to cross Highway 80 to get there.

Ride bicycles to our local shops and markets. Walk to several nice restaurants, or have food delivered. Walking distance to the freshest seafood in the South – “Bowie Seafood”. This property offers a true epicurean experience with an AGA Legacy gas range. 5 burners-2 ovens! Kitchen fully stocked with a wide selection of appliances and cooks’ tools, from coffee grinders to zesters. As you indulge your culinary passions your guests can shoot pool on the “Brunswick pool table” or segue to one of the four large porches. Prepare your feast, and maybe you want to cook your steaks or shish kabobs outdoors on a real fire pit with an adjustable grill, or cook on the charcoal Weber.

Our hot summers are quickly tamed with our excellent air-conditioning and porches on all 4 compass points, - so you just move around to suit your taste for sun or shade. The private yard complements the Retreat effect, and is filled with birds and squirrels and offers plenty of shade with our large Live Oak trees. Come experience Tybee as it should be – Rich in History, Gentle Breezes and Good-Times!

You will be hypnotically relaxed by the quarter sawn flooring and honey-gold antique Heart Pine interiors. “Pet friendly” with gated areas on 2 porches. Fix a great dinner, after a day at the beach and settle into an evening of old-fashioned fun with friends and family! All on ground level, 2200 sf. air-conditioned and nearly a 1000 sf. in porches, one screened porch. The private master suite has its own porch and a new bathroom with large soaking tub & shower. The other 2 bedrooms are in the same building as the kitchen and feature a King -size bed in the larger bedroom, and a Queen-size bed in the smaller bedroom which has a beautiful beach mural painted on one wall.

We offer cable, wireless internet and a large collection of board games. Come, shoot pool & play Ping-Pong. With the hide-away sofa and a few air mattresses we have certainly slept 10 -12. Beach gear, and low-country cooking gear available upon request. This is a “perfect retreat for couples”, families or any get-together. Enjoy the beach!

Extremely disappointed & way overpriced

Not sure we stayed in the same house as the one talked about in the other reviews. The first impression on the outside of the house is that it is in need of repair and maintenance. The only picture here that even comes close to the real thing is the pool table, all the others are laughable. The house was never cleaned out from a previous owner who has passed away and all the personal items are still there including his clothes in one of the closets (creepy). The floor was too dirty to walk around in bare feet, we had to kill lots of spiders and roaches (I know it the beach but you have to treat them with an exterminator). The side porch has an old rusty/moldy refrigerator that was not cleaned out in quite a long while (disgusting). All the furniture inside and out is old and dirty, don't even think about using the fire pit as it's full of trash and there is old broke down furniture (futon) around it (NASTY). Over all the property is rundown and I would never use the word "rustic" to describe it. It's old and rundown and in need of a LOT of TLC. We spent 7 uncomfortable nights/days but had no other choice but to deal with it. NO, I would not recommend it to a friend.

great vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I rented this house for us and about 9 others to stay for a friend's wedding. It was amazing. The kitchen was fully stocked as far as pots, pans, and dishware which made cooking for everyone very simple. The rooms were beautifully decorated and rather large. Slept all of us comfortably. It was nice to be just a short walk from the beach and other amenities. We have decided to make it our annual vacation spot! Cannot wait to go back!

Perfect Getaway!

If you are looking for a laid back vacation spot then the Villa is for you. Our family of 4 and 2 dogs really enjoyed our time here. We had a family of 3 (1 adult and 2 kids) join us for a few nights and there was plenty of room for us all. The house is very spacious and has a rustic feel but has been very nicely remodeled. The kitchen was beautiful and well equipped with all the pots, pans, plates, etc. you need. There is a fire pit out back with benches and chairs where the kids enjoyed their s'mores and ghost stories. We had some friends come from Savannah for a shrimp boil we cooked on the pit as well. Tybee was so nice but a bit cool this time of year. We walked or rode our bikes to the Sugar Shack for ice cream almost everyday. I recommend bringing your bike as there are biking trails throughout the neighborhood and the beach, lighthouse and restaurants are just a short 2 minute or less bike ride from the house. We look forward to coming back here soon!

Second stay and better than the first

  • 5 of 5
This is the second year we've stayed here and with the new screened in porch it was even better! A 5 minute walk to the beach, 20 minute drive to Savannah, and bike ride to anywhere on Tybee it is the ultimate location. The house is awesome! Lots of room and great space to gather. Jim is the ultimate host, no rental company to deal with here. Looking forward to next year.

Great beach getaway and easy access to Savannah

  • 4 of 5
My family and I stayed at Fort Screven for two weeks this Summer. The house itself is a neat place and very well kept. It's clean, organized, and obviously very well maintained. Having a young child with us, we enjoyed having the pool table in the main living area and spent many nights playing after his bedtime (otherwise, we probably would've been out and about in Savannah after dark). Staying on Tybee was great because Savannah was just a short drive, but we also had the option of spending the day on the beach if we wanted. For the two weeks we were there, we enjoyed many beautiful beach days. The beach at Tybee is unique because it isn't overly crowded - we were even witnesses to a beautiful wedding over one of the weekends! After the day at the beach, we'd go back to the house, wash up, and take a walk in the lovely park across the street. I spent many mornings in the park, too, walking our dog. The importance of having access to Savannah can't be overstated - Savannah is bustling and exciting, so we did take quite a few days to explore the city, shopping and taking tours, exploring the squares. We even spent my son's 1st birthday there, but headed back to Tybee that evening to enjoy some food at Sting Ray's (DEFINITELY go there!). It was nice to head back to such a relaxing environment after a long and exciting day. The house itself has some nice features, particularly the screened-in porch off of the main living area. It's a nice place to sit and listen to the sounds of nature in this quaint and special place.

Note: if you are traveling with a child that is crawling or just learning to walk, make sure you bring baby gates. We luckily did and were so glad to be able to block him off from the kitchen and the entrance to the main building where there is a step at the point at which the buildings are conjoined.

Truly unique property!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at the house over Memorial Day weekend and it exceeded our expectations. Even after reading over the other positive reviews, there are lots of little details about the house that make it a great place to stay. The house itself is loaded with unique features like a full-size pool table, a very well-stocked kitchen, a screened porch, and lots of space both for sleeping and hanging out. The rest of the property is natural and secluded and includes a fenced dog enclosure, grill, ping-pong table, and fire pit in the back yard. The house was also very well-stocked with everything you could possibly need during your stay. The location is also surprising; it's only a 5-10 minute walk to the beach despite feeling like you're off the beaten path.

From the Owner

As lifelong residents of the region, we chose to preserve and renovate this unique historic property. Our location is so off the beaten path, that we really never knew the property existed until it came up for sale.

Savannah is great but little beats the Beach for a nice Holiday
