Wonderful - Highly Recommended!!!

  • 5 of 5
We were very happy with the experiences in staying this wonderful apartment! A group of us (5 adults and 1 teenager) arrived there a little bit earlier than normal check in time, but luckly enough the rooms were cleaned already and the owner, Lauren, was there greeting us. When we entered the apartment, immediately we loved it: newly remodeled rooms with modern decorations, three welcoming bed rooms, very nice dinning table, sofa, and big screen TV with cable acess plus international channels (Chinese, Korean, Japeneese, etc). The aprtment location is so good, only walking distance to pier 39, China Town, and different restaurant options. The owner is very professional and caring: when she learnt we like to make tea ourselves, she immediately delivered a new kettle to the kitchen. It was truly a wonderful stay in SF and in this apartment!!!

Great location

  • 4 of 5
As stated in other reviews, this place is all about the location. North Beach is an outstanding neighborhood with many good local restaurants and clubs. We ate at several of the nearby restaurants, had coffee and pastries each morning at the coffee houses, tried some gelato, etc, etc. We walked to literally all of the the attractions - the wharf, pier, boat dock to Alcatraz, Chinatown, Lombard St, cable cars, etc. Coit tower is steps (steep steps of course) away. Shopping for groceries was also convenient with Safeway and Trader Joe's a relatively short distance.

We did choose to rent a car for several day trips out of the city and paid for the onsite garage space which was very convenient. But if you're just touring the sites in the city, don't bother with the car, you won't need it. There are several local rental car agencies if you decide to rent one at the last minute.

I should mention we are a family of four with two teenagers. The space of the apartment was great for us. The owner was responsive to any question and there were no problems with the check-in process. This is an old building as you would expect in the heart of San Francisco. Use Google street view to look at the building and around the neighborhood. The pictures on the VRBO website are very accurate. The kitchen and bathrooms were recently updated and clean which was very important to us. I did not give five stars for the following, easily correctable I should add, reasons: First, the living room rug and chair were filthy. As in disgusting to the point that we threw a blanket over the chair before we would sit on it. Second, the window in the bedroom that is near back porch did not have a lock. There was a burglar stop, but the window still opened about 8 - 10 inches which is enough to unsettle a teenage girl. Quite frankly, for the nightly rate we paid I would not have expected to have to point those things out.

Again, we would have given the fifth star if not for the issues above.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. But the rug and chair issues had been corrected even before we saw this review. We pride ourselves of how well we take care of our rental unit by keeping up with the routine cleaning and maintenance. The rug was ruined by the people who were there prior to you and we have taken it out weeks ago. The furniture had been cleaned. AS for the lock on the window- we will have our maintenance staff check it out and put in a lock if needed. We have not had any incidence in the building however we put our tenants' safety and security as top priority and will do what ever it takes.

This is a fabulous location!!! Right around the corner from the heart of the Italian section (and gelato), and just down the hill from the Coit Tower. We walked to Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf, the Ferry Building, all along the Embarcadero, Union Square. The apartment was big enough for everyone, and the location meant we could go out, come take a break, and go out again. We used the garage one night because we went up to Muir Woods and Point Reyes. We had a great time!!

Great apartment in a fantastic location

  • 5 of 5
We really enjoyed staying at this apartment. It is in a perfect location, quite possibly the best location in the city. We are one block below the Coit Tower and within one or two blocks of multiple restaurants and shopping in North Beach. We walked to the Ferry Building, Union Square, and Fort Mason from the apartment.
The apartment itself was wonderful. It is completely renovated and in great shape. It held our family of six comfortably. We knew beforehand that there was only bathroom but, since the shower was in a separate room, we were able to make it work. The kitchen/living room combo is huge and modern. On Saturday night, there was some street noise that we could hear from the front room, but that is to be expected in a big city. It was nothing out of the ordinary.
We rented a car for our vacation and kept it parked in the garage down the street a couple of blocks away. They were very easy to work with and were reasonably priced. Since we had a minivan, we chose not to use the garage attached to the apartment.
One activity I would definitely recommend is to walk the Filbert Steps on the opposite side of Coit Tower. It is not to be missed.

Location

Activity and Interests

Published by the San Francisco Chronicle: North Beach is that rare place - a neighborhood that manages to be a perennial hit with tourists, yet remains beloved by San Franciscans. It's best known as San Francisco's Little Italy, with its high density of check-clothed ristorantes, caffes and Old World delicatessens. It's also a popular pilgrimage for fans of the Beat movement seeking the old haunts of Kerouac and Ginsberg. However, North Beach is no relic as it has much to offer beyond pasta and poetry. This vital neighborhood is home to some of the liveliest nightclubs and bars in town. Small boutiques carrying handmade clothing and imported goods dot the streets, particularly on upper Grant Avenue. Though Italian restaurants appear to dominate the dining scene, there are plenty of other good spots to try once you've had your fill of lasagna, with menus featuring Japanese, French and contemporary fusion cuisine. City Lights, original publisher of Allen Ginsberg's 'Howl,' is still one of the best bookstores in San Francisco, and founder Lawrence Ferlinghetti can sometimes be seen strolling the neighborhood. Part of the old Barbary Coast, North Beach is steeped in the past - Grant Avenue itself is the oldest street in San Francisco. In the early days, North Point docks served as a gateway for immigrants from South America, Europe and the Australian penal colonies. It wasn't until the late 1800s that thousands of Italians made the area their stronghold and turned it into the local Latin Quarter. The Italian-American community can also be credited in part with protecting the neighborhood against the fire that swept the city after the 1906 earthquake. According to legend, some enterprising residents cracked open the barrels of red wine in their cellars and saved their houses by draping them with wine-soaked blankets. In more recent history, North Beach has produced some notable people, including baseball's great, Joe DiMaggio, who moved there at the age of one and grew up in a flat at Valparaiso and Taylor. Also, former San Francisco mayor Joseph Alioto was born in North Beach. Whether prowling for historic landmarks, sampling house-roasted espressos, shopping, clubbing or chowing down, you'll find North Beach has plenty to offer for both a leisurely afternoon visit and a night on the town. Take a detour off the main drag of Columbus and you're likely to run across some unexpected treasure of a shop, restaurant or spectacular view that only this San Francisco gem-of-a-neighborhood could offer.
