Absolutely Awesome!

  • 5 of 5
Had an absolutely fabulous time staying at Casa Ceiba.

House was great and help from Kelly (conceirge) and Emilce's cooking were outstanding.

Staying here was one of the highlights of our trip to Costa Rica having close access to variety of activities from zip-lining to ATV to horseback riding. Lilander's Appalosa stables and horseback riding excursion to "secret" waterfall will be something we will never forget and would highly recommend.

Views from home and variety of flowers and wildlife were truly beautiful.

Thank you!

Perfect Paradise!

  • 5 of 5
We (my wife, our four college age kids, and myself) had a fantastic stay at Casa Ceiba. We all agree that our stay was too short and we did not want to leave when it was time to continue on our trip of Costa Rica.

Jim was excellent with communications prior to, and after, our arrival; and his driving directions from San Jose were spot on. We even managed to find the place after dark!

When I asked Jim about local restaurants, he was happy to provide a list of choices. But he also said his preference was to have Emilce and Luis do the cooking. We chose that option and are soooooo glad we did. They are a wonderful couple, and having breakfast and dinner prepared each day at the house was perfect. The food was fantastic! This option also allowed us more time to relax at the house and enjoy the beautiful view.

Alan, the property manager, was a big help with making arrangements for any planned activities we chose. During our brief stay we managed to go zip-lining at Sky Trek, soak in the hot springs at Los Lagos, climb Cerro Chato and go horseback riding at Charlies place up the road. We started and ended each day with a relaxing swim in the pool.

It was a perfect paradise. Thank you Jim, Alan, Emilce and Luis!

Peaceful World

  • 5 of 5
We found this to be a very peaceful place to relax and wonderful location for some adventure. We didn't hear the sounds of any machinery, only birds and howler monkeys. We like watching the howler monkeys play in the trees about 50 meters away. We got used to their "wake up call" at around 5 am as the sun started to rise. The property manger, Allan, was very helpful and set us up for horseback riding and lunch at Charlie's place about 1 km away. We also took advantage of the Eco Zoo and Butterfly Conservancy also within 1 km. Allan also steered us to a great hot springs, Los Lagos. The meals prepared by Emilce and Luis were fantastic, so we had them prepare for us 3 out of 4 nights we were there. The other night we went to Rancho Margo, a 400 acre self sustaining ranch, that is only 15-20 minutes away and we would highly recommend. Rancho Margo's brochure says "where the middle of nowhere is somewhere special" and we would totally agree. The owner, Jim, sent us very useful directions and a listing of area attractions/adventures. There were six of us staying - me, my wife our two sons in their early to mid 20's, my younger son's girlfriend and a niece in her 30's. We had a fantastic time. The only small issue is that the hot tub was not heating which we would have liked especially after the horseback ride and hike to the waterfalls. Overall, I would highly recommend this lovely home.

Owner's Response: Thanks Paul for staying with us. It is always a pleasure to hear that our guests enjoyed the El Castillo area as much as we do. We'll be sure to pass along your comments to Emilce and Luis about the meals that they prepared during your stay. I'm sorry to hear about the problem with the hot tub not heating. Apparently the heating element failed and we couldn't get it serviced before you departed. It has since been repaired and I am arranging to have spare parts on hand in case of need for future emergency repairs. Thanks again for the positive review and for choosing our place!

Beautiful house and amazing views of volcano and lake

  • 5 of 5
My family absolutely loved our stay at Casa Ceiba! I loved waking up each morning to the sounds of the howler monkeys and the birds. The pictures really don't show how breathtakingly beautiful the view of the lake and volcano are from the house. We had originally planned to stay 3 nights, but added an extra night and I am so glad we did. Daily we saw green parrots, toucans, hummingbirds, oropendola and many other birds. I wish I could remember the name of the large black/brown bird that sounded like a helicopter each time it flew over. We heard the howler monkeys every morning and watched several coati jumping around in a tree the day we left.
Zip lining at Sky Trek (just down the road) was a highlight. While riding the tram up we also saw 3 howler monkeys sitting in a tree right next to the tram. We also loved and would highly recommend driving and hiking at Rio Celeste (also saw howler monkeys in the trees along the road on the north side of Lake Arenal). We stopped and ate at the Gingerbread on the way home would absolutely recommend dinner there. Fantastic food, service and a unique experience. Also absolutely loved our home cooked meal by Emilce and Luis. Our kids are picky eaters and I was afraid they wouldn’t eat much, but all four of the kids ate everything and said it was the “best chicken ever.” My husband and I had the tilapia and it was fantastic! They were so kind and warm! We also really enjoyed hiking to the waterfall from the trail up the road. Again, loved that we were the only people around and had the forest and waterfall to ourselves.
I was originally worried that being outside of La Fortuna would be inconvenient. Not at all the case for us. We loved being away from all the resorts and our kids enjoyed having an entire house and pool to themselves. We went into La Fortuna to go to the waterfall and picked up groceries from Super Christian on the way through town, but otherwise enjoyed being between Lake Arenal and La Fortuna as we spent most of our time on this side of “town.” I loved how safe it felt and that we could enjoy the smells and sounds of the forest by sleeping with the windows open.
Casa Ceiba is an absolutely beautiful house that I would recommend to anyone going to Costa Rica. I hope that we can return another day. Thanks Jim, Allen, Emilce and Luis for making our stay in the La Fortuna/Arenal area amazing!

Owner's Response: Dear Janet: We were also glad to have your beautiful family stay at our place. It sounds as though you managed to squeeze quite a number of the unique activities and attractions that El Castillo has to offer in the four days that you stayed. Many of our guests say that they would like to have stayed longer than they do and even a week isn't enough to get everything in. I'll have to check into the "helicopter" bird that you mentioned and get back to you with the name. I wonder if it might have been the wild turkeys, although those usually don't fly too far from the trees. Thanks again for choosing our place and we hope to see you in Costa Rica again some day!

Casa Ceiba

  • 5 of 5
We had a lovely stay at Casa Ceiba--it was clean, had a fabulous view, and accommodated our group of 6 adults and one infant very comfortably. We managed a hike to Cerro Chato, dinner at Rancho Margot, and split up for canyoneering and hanging bridge tours. We loved the contrast of the Arenal area from the heat of Dominical--refreshing to have rain showers and cooler temperatures in the mountains. Beautiful home, colorful plantings, quiet, neighboring farm entertained us (as well as an anteater, howler monkeys, variety of birds). Recommended.

We enjoyed four nights at this amazing home. Our favourite part of our stay was waking up to the beautiful view of the lake and volcanoe, having coffee down by the pool and soaking up the sun by 7am. Jim provides excellent directions to his home making it very easy to locate and his activities, restaurants, attractions list filled our days. We were disappointed we did not have time for Emilce cook for us. Allan was very helpful and informative. The house is beautiful, people are great, highly recommend staying here. Thank you Jim, wish we would have had more time in your area.

From the Owner

You'll hear many stories about people that visit Costa Rica and experience an epiphany or an awakening. That's what happened to us. We began searching for land in Aug 2010 and found the Old Ceiba Tree lot. A year after beginning construction, the house is nearly finished. There is an energy that one can feel when you are there; it's indescribable but undeniable. Once you experience it, you'll be going back over and over.

From the Owner

We designed the home to bring the outdoors and indoors together. There are floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors that open to lake and volacano views. The cool mountain breezes flow thoughout the home. The temperatures average about 75°F year round so no airconditioning is necessary. We get our pure crystal clear soft water from a mountain spring ('naciente') that is about 6km in the virgin cloud forest. At night the temperates typically drop about 10° and in December and January you might even need to put a fleece on to stay warm. Being on the edge of the Monteverde Cloud Forest, we get a lot of rain but if you wait an hour the weather will change and when the sun pops out be careful because you can get a sunburn even when the sky is overcast (ask Josie). Each room has a terrace facing the lake/volcano side of the house. We love to enjoy the unbelievable cooking of Emilce, the former owner of a restaurant in Fortuna (Vaca Muca). She has the ability to take just about anything that's in the refrigerator and turn it into a meal that you'll never forget. Our favorite is 'pescado al ajillo' (corbineta or tilapia filet sauteed in fresh garlic) served with home fries, mixed vegetables (be sure to ask for chaote, cauliflower and carrots) and 'patacas' (plantain chips). Be prepared to rise early to the sounds of howler monkeys that frequently spend the night in our guarumo tree (a favorite hangout for all kinds of monkeys and birds) or the cacaphony of our flock of loras (red-lored parrots) that reside in the remaining branches of the 500 year old giant Ceiba tree that has unfortunately reached the end of it's life but still stands majestically on the west edge of our property. It's a local landmark that can actually be seen in satellite photos. We have a hiking trail that connects to the Linda Vista Hotel that winds past the Ceiba and down through the forest. Another trail has been cut farther up the hill that leads all the way down to the river for a refreshing dip.
