Jim was a great host

Great Home - nice master bedroom and bath.
We were two couples with two smaller toddlers.

Jim provided us with great directions to his home with step by step turns.
We really liked the carved doors and outdoor terraces of the home.

The best stay ever

  • 5 of 5
I usually don't write reviews but this one deserves one. This is a beautiful proprty (probably the best we have stayed at). It is in the middle of a forest with amazing views of the lake. The staff are some of the nicest people we have met. We had them come and cook for us every day and it was to die for. We had mangoes for every meal. The cook even organized a trip for us where the kids got to milk the cow and drink the milk after. They will never forget that. When we left, one of the kids forgot his trousers and the staff mailed it to us internationally without a charge. We had such a good time that we will definitely be going back and we almost never go to the same place twice.

It's all about the view!

It's all about the view!

We stayed at Casa Ceiba for 4 nights in January. The view of Lake Renal was amazing! My grandson loved the pool even though the water was chilly. The hot tub needs to be run around 45 minutes before sitting in it to warm it up. We saw lots of humming birds and a few toucans and other birds I couldn't identify. We heard Howler monkeys but never saw any. You definitely need a 4x4 to get up the steep and rocky road to the house. Make sure you call Allen, the house manager, before arriving so he meets you there with the keys. He will set up any tours for you and arrange to have Emilce cook, clean or do the laundry if preferred. We had her cook one breakfast and one dinner which we loved both. Close by, right up the hill, is a great restaurant. Allen can make reservations for you. The house is about 1/2 hour from La Fortuna so plan accordingly for groceries. There is a small general store in El Castillo but not a big selection of groceries. Lots of hiking close by. Sky Adventures zip-ling is great. Go into La Fortuna and enjoy some of the hot springs. Tabacon, beautiful but expensive. Los Lagos cheaper and less crowded.

Simply Amazing!

  • 5 of 5
I stayed in Casa Ceiba with my daughter and partner. Sadly the house was fully booked and we only got to stay one night in this outstanding property. The views are breathtaking, the majestic volcano to one side and the lake on the other side colide in this amazing form of nature. We got to see the sunset and that was just priceless. Since we had only one night at the house we spent the entire time at the pool and the jacuzzi sipping cocktails while listening to howler monkeys, crickets and cicadas.
The house was really clean and the property is well maintained, the kitchen is perfect for entertaining and well equipped, we had lots of fun preparing dinner. The wooden rocking chairs in the main balcony are perfect to enjoy the views as well. We found everything we needed and more. We truly wished we could have stayed longer. I really recommend this house to anyone who is looking to get away from it all, loves to be one with nature and is willing to go the extra mile to have more privacy and freedom from the more commercial places. We had a unique experience and we hope to come back very soon!

Away from it all

  • 4 of 5
Just the two of us stayed here for 10 days. It was certainly more house than we needed, but we felt at home and loved having the pool and hot tub. The views from this house are incredible and were made more so by the variety of bird species the frequent the area. If you want to get away from it all, this is a great place to stay; you're simultaneously close to a lot of parks and small towns but not surrounded by tourists. We had two days without power and no communication, but that's what you expect when you're this far into the rainforest in the rainy season. We took this as an opportunity to do some nearby hiking and patronize a local restaurant that had a generator. Cerro Chato was our favorite nearby hike. We were disappointed that we couldn't do our own laundry and a little surprised by the road conditions leading up to the house (a 4x4 is a must), but we had a great stay.

My family stayed at this home for a week over a month ago. I have addressed concerns with the owner and since he has never responded, followed up, or changed the ammenities and information listed, I feel that I should warn other potential guests of the misleading information advertised with this home. Daily house keeping is advertised and this is not true. During our week stay, Emilce came twice. I contacted the property manager as well as the owner about this and was told daily house keeping is no longer provided unless requested. I then requested it as it was very important that we be able to wash laundry as we always pack light when renting homes with laundry machines, and the laundry room at this house is kept locked and only accessible by the housekeeper. When she did come on day 3, she arrived with a hand crank portable washing machine and explained that the truth was the washing machine in the laundry room had been broken for some time and had never been replaced by the owner. She said the only way for us to wash our clothes and the house towels and linens was to let her do it since it is a crank machine. This was a mistake as our delicates and underwear came out torn and chewed up. The other issue with not having daily cleaning service or any manual about upkeep of the home was the trash and waste disposal. There are very tiny waste buckets in the bathrooms and all toilet paper must be put into the waste buckets. These began to overflow on day 2 as did the kitchen trash since we were cooking our meals. This home does not supply hair blow dryers, and again, we did not pack those as every home I have ever rented at this price range always has those basics. Many of the screens are torn or separated from the doors and need maintenance. The paint on the pool also needs maintenance. The photos for this home need to be updated as they are going on 3 years old and vegetation is vastly different. This is a lovely home, in a spectacular setting with amazing views. It just needs maintenance and management. I cannot forgive the false advertising though, particularly when there has been plenty of time to correct it.

Owner's Response: I have made a request to VRBO not post this review since this guest booked my house via AirBnB (under a different name) and for some reason this guest has been posting negative reviews on every site that I have my home listed on. (Check her original review at ). The claim of false advertising is erroneous. BASIC housekeeping is provided on alternate days and the laundry access is clearly stated as only available when my housekeeper is present since the utility room is kept locked when she isn't there. The "hand crank" machine described by this guest is a NEW non-automatic washing machine that I purchased at the request of my housekeeper since she is the one who washes all of the towels and linens. This is a manually operated machine that probably is not suitable for guest self service. Basic housekeeping means sweeping and trash removal; it does not mean laundry service, dishwashing, bed making, etcetera. Emilce sometimes performs this basic housekeeping when guests are not there. I suspect that the root cause for this vindictive review may be that she is seeking some kind of compensation for clothing that she claimed was damaged by my housekeeper who did laundry for her (at no charge) but I have not taken the bait so now she is posting reviews on every site she can find. I have chosen not to engage in a confrontation with this person but there were numerous violations of my rental agreement. Extra undisclosed guests were on the premises that were not paid for (AirBnB rate is calculated based on the number of guests so understating gives a lower rate). The sheets in one of the bedrooms were so soiled that they had to be disposed. This guest also stole pillows from the same bedroom. I'm not sure what feedback or dialog she is looking for but the review is clearly inconsistent with ANY of the other reviews and guest experiences. She also seems to have taken up the role of vacation home consultant with all kinds of advice on home maintenance and how I should update the photos to show the beautiful landscaping and advice on how to paint the pool. I have chosen to absorb the costs incurred by the damage caused by this guest and to ignore the violation of the rental agreement but if this review gets posted then I have no choice but to defend myself and let other potential guests know that this reviewer has some sort of ulterior motive or agenda she is pursuing. I now regret that I did not withhold the security deposit.

From the Owner

You'll hear many stories about people that visit Costa Rica and experience an epiphany or an awakening. That's what happened to us. We began searching for land in Aug 2010 and found the Old Ceiba Tree lot. A year after beginning construction, the house is nearly finished. There is an energy that one can feel when you are there; it's indescribable but undeniable. Once you experience it, you'll be going back over and over.

From the Owner

We designed the home to bring the outdoors and indoors together. There are floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors that open to lake and volacano views. The cool mountain breezes flow thoughout the home. The temperatures average about 75°F year round so no airconditioning is necessary. We get our pure crystal clear soft water from a mountain spring ('naciente') that is about 6km in the virgin cloud forest. At night the temperates typically drop about 10° and in December and January you might even need to put a fleece on to stay warm. Being on the edge of the Monteverde Cloud Forest, we get a lot of rain but if you wait an hour the weather will change and when the sun pops out be careful because you can get a sunburn even when the sky is overcast (ask Josie). Each room has a terrace facing the lake/volcano side of the house. We love to enjoy the unbelievable cooking of Emilce, the former owner of a restaurant in Fortuna (Vaca Muca). She has the ability to take just about anything that's in the refrigerator and turn it into a meal that you'll never forget. Our favorite is 'pescado al ajillo' (corbineta or tilapia filet sauteed in fresh garlic) served with home fries, mixed vegetables (be sure to ask for chaote, cauliflower and carrots) and 'patacas' (plantain chips). Be prepared to rise early to the sounds of howler monkeys that frequently spend the night in our guarumo tree (a favorite hangout for all kinds of monkeys and birds) or the cacaphony of our flock of loras (red-lored parrots) that reside in the remaining branches of the 500 year old giant Ceiba tree that has unfortunately reached the end of it's life but still stands majestically on the west edge of our property. It's a local landmark that can actually be seen in satellite photos. We have a hiking trail that connects to the Linda Vista Hotel that winds past the Ceiba and down through the forest. Another trail has been cut farther up the hill that leads all the way down to the river for a refreshing dip.
