Enchanting 2 BR, 1 BA Rainforest Mountain House

Your own Costa Rican private hilltop house located 25 minutes from the town of La Fortuna and Volcano Arenal. This beautiful retreat is about 2 and 1/2 hours from San Jose (main airport) and about 3 hours from the Pacific beaches. This well-built and locally decorated home sits on a hill overlooking its own tropical fruit and flower garden. Just beyond the exotic garden are beautiful horse pastures, a whitewater river and the jungle of the federally protected Children’s Eternal Rainforest which offers endless hiking trails and birding opportunities. Wake up to the magical sounds of the Costa Rican Rainforest (howler monkeys, gentle rain, and the songs of over 123 species of birds seen on-site). Brew a pot of locally grown fresh Costa Rican Café, and step out onto the large deck to enjoy the 270° view and lounge in one of the 2 hammocks provided.

This house is very peaceful and remote yet it has the wonderful feature of being within walking distance to the ecotourist destination Chachagua Rainforest Hotel. This unique setting offers total privacy with all the comforts of a first class lodge. The conveniences offered by the hotel include: English-speaking staff on property at all times, cell phones in case of emergencies, night watchman, laundry, restaurant serving delicious local Costa Rican cuisine, fully stocked bar, beautiful outdoor swimming pool, massage therapists, tropical gardens,, access to rainforest hiking trails, rental horses and tours. We consider this to be the best of both worlds: the security and convenience of a hotel yet the quiet remoteness of a private home.

The house has 2 bedrooms. The master bedroom has a nice queen size bed and its own porch with superb views. The guest bedroom has two beds, one double and one twin.

There is 1 bathroom with beautiful private shower that overlooks rainforest. Colorful hand painted murals cover three of the walls within the house and illustrate forest scenes (done by a talented local artist). There is a great kitchen with all the tools to cook a healthy meal. There is also a family room that opens up to the best porch in the world. The house is an awesome place to relax. Guests can spend countless days just sitting in the hammocks, eating fresh fruit and watching the toucans, parrots, hummingbirds and countless birds that visit the garden at the house.

Over the past 10 years we have planted many fruit trees. Fruits include mangos, oranges, figs, coconuts, rambatans (chinese leechis), guanabanas, tamarindos, bananas, plantains, limes, water apple, coffee, and cacao (chocolate). All ov which is available to you when it is ripe!

Not only is the house a great place to chill out, but it is in an ideal location to use as a home base when you go on adventures.

Things to do in close by La Fortuna are:

Watch lava flow from the crater of Volcano Arenal (one of the most picturesque volcanoes), visit a 100ft waterfall (Catarata La Fortuna), bathe in natural hot springs, fish and windsurf on Lake Arenal, whitewater raft, explore the Volcano Arenal National Park, take a wildlife/bird tour to Cano Negro, go on a caving tour, dine at many restaurants, dance at the local discothèque (Volcan Look), get cool souvenirs, get money from an ATM, or use the internet. Also, you are less then a 4 hour drive to a variety of nice beaches on the Pacific coasts as well as the enchanting cloud forests of Monte Verde. The Caribbean coast is only about 5 hours away.

Whatever your questions might be about the house, general area, or Costa Rica, I would love to answer them. I lived in this friendly and peaceful community for a year when I first went to Costa Rica in 1998 to be an English Teacher.

Cozy and secluded

  • 4 of 5
We just returned from a 3 night stay at this great little place. Our family of 4 was a perfect fit for this home. The views from the porch are amazing and seemed to change each day depending on the time and weather. As others have mentioned a 4x4 is needed to get to this home. I would recommend a 4x4 for any significant travel in Costa Rica. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking and we cooked dinner and breakfast every day. There is no full sized oven but there is toaster oven that worked for our needs. The screened windows combined with ceiling fans allowed for great breezes throughout our stay. Having access to the resort amenities came in handy, although we did not use them as much as I thought we would.
Overall we had a wonderful stay and would recommend this home.

Beautiful, Relaxing Slice of Nature

  • 5 of 5
The place is a gem. It's private, has all the necessary kitchen goodies, and the views are gorgeous.

Having access to the Rainforest Hotel facilities was convenient, David helped us find things to do and the restaurant was perfect for our first night. They let you run a tab for the duration of your stay too.

We arrived in the early evening, so it was dark and I highly recommend getting there in daylight as the roads are windy around Arenal. It's a solid 4-5 hours from Liberia.

You should rent an SUV or AWD for the last stretch of hill up to the place. Unless you travel light, then you could park at the hotel and lug your stuff up (about 700-1000 meters.)

The birds were great in the morning. Toucans, hummingbirds, etc. You're in the rainforest so expect lots of bugs in-and-out of the place. But the place was clean, and they left us a welcoming fruit basket to start our stay.

Wish more of the fruit was in season on the property, only limes at the time. We wish we had stayed longer, I'd say 4-5 nights is perfect for the area around Arenal and La Fortuna. Although this could easily be home for months...

Blissed in the mist

Just left this gorgeous place yesterday...really, really sad to go. After having re-read the other posted reviews, there is not much to add...this place is THE place if you want to unplug from all the distractions in your life and plug into a rainforest retreat. The Resort is unseen from the house, but only a short hike down the hill...It can be a little challenging to get to this place from the paved road so...learn from my mistakes :)...Make your first arrival during daylight hours; Do rent a 4x4 to provide safe traction and clearance over the rocky road; the resort gate is locked at 10pm, so let the staff know if you are arriving after that time; and bring lots of food...it's not easy to run out to the store, plus once you get there you may not want to leave :)

PS...we already miss Cabela, the sweet dog who will check on you throughout your stay.

Amazing Rainforest Escape

  • 5 of 5
We spent four days and three nights at this amazing property. Everything is as advertised in the listing and photos: secluded, beautiful, access to a first class hotel/resort, hiking trails, birds, animals, and much more. Our family of four (2 adults, 2 kids ages 7 + 11) had ample room to live, sleep, cook, and relax on the deck and hammocks. The house was clean, and stocked with all needed kitchen equipment. Towels provided and a shower with hot water. We were there during the rainy season, and believe it or not it rains quite often during the rainy season. With that being said, we were not denied the beauty and activities of the area: hikes, hanging bridges, waterfalls, hot springs, bird watching and animal preserves all less than an hours drive, and we only scratched the surface. The hotel close by offered suggestions, directions, guided tours, access to their natural spring water pool and a full service restaurant.

Understand that you are in a secluded rainforest retreat, there are bugs of all shapes and sizes (just like anywhere in Costa Rica). But if you are looking to stay in a home that is away from the hustle of tourism this is your place, it was a truly peaceful escape. I would recommend this property to friends, family and anyone looking to experience a quiet retreat. The owner answered all inquiries in a timely fashion and was helpful with directions and information.

Thanks for a wonderful stay!

Recently stayed on our honeymoon

  • 5 of 5
We recently spent a week at this beautiful rental home. Jan 2 - Jan 9. The owner is honest - property was well described and all transactions went smoothly.. The home is very nice. It is equipped with all you will need for your stay. FYI it doesn't have tv or internet but there is so much to see and do, you won't need it. If you want to check your email/internet or watch tv, it is easily available at the hotel located within walking distance of the house. The Chachagua hotel/resort was an awesome amenity to the house. They have a swimming pool, restaurant - serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, bar, and friendly staff for any questions or to schedule tours. Tours such as Arenal volcano, hot springs, hanging bridges, waterfalls, river rafting ect.

There are many things to do on the grounds of the home or hotel as well at no cost. Such as the 2 ponds are stocked with fish. 1 has Talapia and the other has Guapote. The hotel will provide the bait. I was able to catch about 10 talapia in less than 30 minutes. Take them to the grill. Yum. They have trails through the rainforest. The natural landscape is full of interesting plants, trees, fruit, birds. It's truly amazing how fertile the land is. The home is very quaint and relaxing. It is set in the trees with the birds. You can cut some fruit and leave it on the feeders off the balcony and many colorful birds will come up for you to take pictures of the various species. As far as seeing La Fortuna area, it's about a 30 minute drive. It's reasonably close when you take into consideration the privacy this home offers. This home allows you to feel like you are living as the Ticos do but also allows for amenities that the tourist enjoy. It's an awesome place to visit. Our stay was absolutely perfect. I would certainly recommend this vacation home and we can't wait to go back. Pura Vida!

Toucans on the patio

  • 4 of 5
Well equiped house in a beautiful location. Good service from the owner. That's exactly what a chalet in the mountains should be. We saw 2 Toucans coming to the patio while we were playing cards! I would recommend this property to my friends. Pura Vida!

Location

From the Owner

I fell in love with this house on my visit this spring and ended up buying it, I am continuing to rent it and have the same delightful caretakers as the prior owner. There is a lot to do and see in the area. Unfortunately when I took over the listing all the info and good reviews got blocked out but there is a book with information and reviews by previous visitors in the house.

Activity and Interests

Car: recommended

This wonderful house is located near Volcano Arenal east of La Fortuna.

This map shows it in the town of Chachagua, But in reality 2km away and is adjacent to the Children's Eternal Rainforest.
