Villa, 5 Bedrooms, 5 Baths, (Sleeps 15)

Enjoy the luxury of outdoor living in serenity and seclusion, in this amazing compound boasting multiple living areas for multiple activities.

Nestled on a 7.5 acre property, with over 200 meters (675 linear feet) of beach frontage, at the most private sector of Playa Grande’s four mile long beach within Las Baulas National Marine Park, this spacious compound is just steps from the water’s edge and offers views of the beach and spectacular sunsets from virtually every vantage point.

The very large swimming pool (where you can actually swim laps and children can actually play), is only steps from the beach and conveniently located between the Tiki bar, the main house and the guest house - all surrounded by beautiful gardens planted with palm trees, fruit trees and flowers that attract monkeys, exotic birds , iguanas and many other sorts of wildlife from the park .

With three master suites and two regular bedrooms (all with adjacent bathrooms, air conditioning and TV), a fully equipped ocean view kitchen, three dinning areas and indoor and outdoor living areas, Casa Velas is the ideal vacation home for groups of one or more families.

The Villa is designed in a way that integrates the different activity areas yet allowing for space and privacy among its guests.

If you plan your trip between October and March you will have the privilege of witnessing the majestic Leatherback Turtles nesting , sometimes right in front of the main house.

Daily housekeeping , gardener and 24 hour security are provided ; our amazing private chef is also available at your request - all contributing to give you the experience of fun , play , relaxation and pampering that defines Costa Rican living.

A five minute walk will take you to the estuary that separates pristine Playa Grande from Tamarindo - where you will find an abundance of restaurants , shops and nightlife. A panga will take you across for a small fee.

Love Nature, Live Nature, Enjoy the Costa Rican Experience !!!!!

Wonderful Beach House Getaway

  • 5 of 5
We rented Casa Velas for most of January 2015 and had a wonderful time. The perfect beach house. While not lavish it provided us with a wonderful place to enjoy the most wonderful Costa Rica beach, Playa Grande. We were three couples that enjoyed the best of outdoor living while staying there.
For information the pool is spectacular and wonderfully maintained by Luis. Dimensions of the pool are 14 feet X 29 feet. The shallow end is 3 feet deep going to about 4 feet deep.
Anna did a wonderful job of pampering us with house details on a very regular basis and cooking the most wonderful Costa Rica meals imaginable. She is a gem!
We can reiterate all of the other reviews as being very accurate.
Pura Vida!!

Family Celebrations

  • 5 of 5
I honestly cried when we had to leave...this is how much I loved Playa Grande and Costa Rica. In the fall of 2013 my husband and I chose Costa Rica to celebrate our 40th anniversary and various birthdays. The search began for the perfect home for our daughters, son-in-laws and grand kids ages 15, 12, 9 and 15 months. We found the perfect home in Playa Grande which we rented during Thanksgiving holiday 2014.
From the begnning Ana was great to work with. She answered all of our questions and returned our emails immediately. Nova was equally helpful and closer to arrival we were put in contact with Margie who was also great to work with.
The house looks fabulous online but we still kept thinking "Would it be the same once we got there?" Yes it was and we LOVED IT!!! Just perfect and as other reviews have mentioned, Anna does a fabulous job cooking and we highly recommend this for future renters. As we have a 15 months grandson going into Tamarindo for dinner was not an option and Anna was a blessing. The dinners were delicious and any fish we caught she prepared fabulous meals for us that evening. Luis was super also...that grounds and pool were kept up and he was wonderful to be around. If you are not a Spanish speaker you might consider a translator on your smartphone. Anna and Luis speak a little English but a translator might come in handy.
A previous review mentioned the strong ocean wave action. We did not find this to be a problem but I believe this could be seasonal. The beach is gorgeous!!! Shells of various types and sand dollars everywhere!
Activities...between Ana and Nova, they will assist you with anything you can imagine. Our family of ten were kept busy almost everyday. Several learned to surf, we are still speaking about the all day adventure tour and how many of you have seen a crocodile jump up to grab a piece of chicken within two feet of you? Don't worry though as your are safe.
I could go on and on but I believe you can feel my enthusiasm for how much we love this home and Costa Rica. If you are considering renting here, just do it..you won't regret it. Happy and safe travels.

The best vacation ever

  • 5 of 5
When renting online you of course pay attention to the description, but also the reviews. After reading the reviews, I thought - how could I go wrong. I was right - this place is a wonderful.

This property is cute, eclectic and very rustic. All of the bedrooms have AC, but the main living area didn't. I think the idea is that if you have the front and back sliding doors open, the breeze cools off the living area, however our group was a little crab, hermit crab, lizard adverse so we opted to keep the doors closed most days. This sometimes made it a little warm, but doable.

As others have said, Ana and Luis are really wonderful. They speak very little English, but we were able to communicate the big stuff just fine. For the cost, you can't beat having Ana available to cook for you. Our group had her make all of our meals and it was absolutely fantastic.

Luis was also very good at keeping the pool and property well kept. He cleaned the pool and raked the beach every day. He was also on hand when a little crab blocked me from going up to my room one evening. Having him around made me feel very safe - he rushed off anyone who tried to come on property and solicit the group ( Ana was also very good at that as well).

The only challenge was getting to/from Tamarindo after dark. The water taxis work fine during the day, but at night, there wasn't anything to get to on our own. One night we hired a driver to take us out, but it cost about $100RT ( I told my friend it was an expensive bar crawl). I saw other reviews on the Bula Bula and the Wilmart, but we didn't have any instructions on how to get there, so we relied heavily on Nova for our needs. It would have been nice to have this information written down for little things that we needed like extra water, or soda. I would highly advise against swimming the estuary as there are salt-water crocodiles and apparently they hunt at night. There is a grocery store (Auto-Mercado)in Tamarindo; the ATM dispenses colones and US dollars.

Future renters who want to do things in the evening may want to consider getting a car. We saw other tourist who did that and they got around just fine, but as others have said, the roads are bumpy.

Nova did a good job with making arrangements to and from airport and with our excursions. There were a couple of hiccups, here and there, but nothing major that would needs to be written about. Overall we had a great experience!

Absolutely PERFECT!

  • 5 of 5
Twelve of us stayed here for seven nights. We ranged in age from 17-59. Everyone had a fantastic time for several reasons: 1. The house is perfect for enjoying outdoor living in Costa Rica. The beach, the pool and the outdoor seating areas were perfect for lazy days on Playa Grande. If you like camping and resorting, this place will be a slice of heaven for you! 2. The location is perfect. You are close enough to get to Tamarindo easily, but you feel worlds away. Most of the time we had the beach to ourselves! If you like surfing or boogie boarding, it is perfect. Experienced and novice surfers will love it. We were able to stroll down the beach at night too, which was delightful under a full moon. 3. The FOOD experience. Nova bought our food for us, and Ana did all the cooking and cleaning up. What a treat!! The best part is that Ana is an EXCELLENT cook. I would come back here just for that. We went out to eat twice and regretted it both times. We all sat around and said, "Ana could do this SO much better!"
Thank you Casa Velas for an absolutely magical vacation. It's going to be hard to beat this one!

Awesome Private House right on the Beach!!

  • 5 of 5
Our group of 15 stayed here for 8 nights and absolutely loved it. It is certainly off the beaten path and we loved the seclusion, yet it was a short walk to Tamarindo with all the amenities. the house was well equipped for everyone and the rooms were a good size all with a/c. We had Ana cook our suppers and she was simply amazing. She doesn't speak any English, but we used Google Translate and managed just fine. It was so nice to come home and have an awesome meal prepared that fed our whole group.

the pool was very refreshing and large. It was kept very clean. We loved the outdoor eating area(we ate outside every night). The wifi was excellent. We used Donny with Get Lost in Costa Rica for our excursions and he was excellent. Monkeys right on the property several times.

All in all, it was an amazing vacation and we would love to go back to Casa Velas. It was rustic, authentic Costa Rican, which we loved.

It is a Gem

  • 5 of 5
Casa Velas is a Costa Rica gem in Playa Grande. We were a group of 15 from ages 6-80 and we just got back from two weeks in Costa Rica. We stayed in three different houses and Casa Velas was our favorite. The house easily fit our group and we did not feel cramped. We loved the outdoor spaces to eat and relax. Being on the ocean and having a lovely pool was delightful. We played in the ocean and enjoyed the quiet beach area. Everyone tried to ride the waves with surf boards and boogie boads rented from Frijoles Locos Surf Shop- www.playagrandesurfshop.com. On the first day there we were lucky to see Howler Monkeys, a Raccoon and a coatimundi all in the same tree on the property. The kids had plenty of crabs and iguanas to keep them busy. We hired Ana to help us with cooking and cleaning and everyone loved her meals and help. We did one tour with Javier Vargas from www.lovingcostarica.com and this is one of the highlights of our entire trip. Javier was prompt, considerate and very personable. He kept us entertained and informed the whole trip to and from Palo Verde. He and the boat driver Luis made sure we saw tons of wildlife and we got up close and personal with Monkeys, Crocodiles and iguanas. We would highly recommend Casa Velas as a place to stay while in Playa Grande and Javier Vargas as a tour guide.

The dirt road to Casa Velas is a little long and bumpy. Tamarindo, a bustling surfing town, is an easy walk through forest path or down the beach but you must either hire a boat ($1 per person) or swim to get across the estuary and our group did both. The hotel Bula Bula and a small market are about a 10 minute walk if you need some supplies or a bar restaurant near by. There are a couple of other beaches just north of Playa Grande that we drove to where the surf was a little calmer but it is best to go near low tide. We had the power go out on us twice thanks to storms so make sure you have flashlights with you. Wifi was inconsistent due to the Internet provider. Hot water was nonexistent in the kitchen.

Location

From the Owner

My husband inherited the property from his family. Initially there was absolutely nothing so we would go camping. It was fantastic. Casa Velas was one of the first constructions in Playa Grande. When the first house was built, regulations did not require that there be a setback from the public area, so it was built as close to the beach as possible. We later opened up the house to to keep the feeling of outdoor living that we love so much. We have traveled around the world and have not yet found a place quite like our beautiful Playa Grande.

Amenities

From the Owner

No other house in the area is as close to the ocean as Casa Velas. We do not walk to the beach. We can be in the comfort of the villa and be steps from the ocean. The large swimming pool, also steps from the ocean, has the compound wrap around it - very convenient to watch over the younger guests. Space, space, space.
