Are you looking for a place to get excited about? Welcome to Flying Toucans... where the sights and sounds of wildlife, open-air tropical living and unforgettable views have all been captured in one special place.

(visit flyingtoucans.com)

Enjoy reading the reviews about this luxurious Costa Rican Villa situated on a picturesque point on the southern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. With lots of surrounding jungle, you have all the exclusive privacy needed to enjoy your home in peace...with the exception of some noisy visitors. Yes, the monkeys and the toucans can sound off at any time without first introducing themselves.

Superbly located in Costa Rica's Maritime Zone (within 200 meters of the shoreline), Flying Toucans is one of the very few luxury home rentals in the area that is on the ocean side of the main coastal road. This unique location combines breathtaking views of jungle-clad mountains, sandy beaches, and the tranquil Pacific Ocean with quick, level, convenient 2wd access all year long to shopping, activities and restaurants. If you like beaches, you are in luck as we have an abundance nearby. From the villa, take a short hike down to the point and discover two secluded beaches (one with its own 35' waterfall) or jump in your car and within two minutes be exploring miles of footstep-free sand.

The living and dining rooms offer the romance of open-air tropical living, blending the comforts of home with the nearness of wildlife. The living room or kitchen are great central locations to gather and enjoy all that Flying Toucans has to offer. Plenty of seating for everyone. Don't be surprised if a hummingbird or butterfly cruises through making a cameo appearance.

The large fully-equipped kitchen, with its' beautiful custom cabinetry, and casual eating area is integrated with the living room and the views beyond. Whip up a smoothie or a six course meal...your choice.

Did we mention the pool? Once in, you'll never want to get out of the infinity-edge pool. Just three steps from the villa, the turquoise tile blends into the dazzling coastline and the popular Uvita 'Whale's Tail', a unique place to walk and explore. It overlooks Ballena (which means 'whale') beach National Marine Park so keep your eyes open for Humpback whales and Bottle-Nosed dolphins.

There is a half bath downstairs as well as a laundry room with full-sized washer and dryer.

Two well-furnished air-conditioned master suites are located upstairs. (King bed in one, Queen and Double in other). Each of the suites incorporates the use of local precious hardwoods for the doors and vaulted ceilings. Relax in the comfort of air conditioning or open the windows and let the ocean breezes in. Too comfortable to get out of bed? Fine, enjoy the views from your pillow... now if you could just get someone to bring you breakfast!

Spacious bathrooms feature tumbled Colombian limestone showers and an openness that continues to let the outdoors in while providing all the privacy needed.

You will love taking advantage of the spacious terrace upstairs. It's perfect for wildlife viewing, whale watching, stargazing, photography, sunrises and sunsets, or just dozing off in the comfy hammock. Surrounding the villa are exotic heliconias, a variety of fragrant gingers, exotic palms, birds-of-paradise, fruit trees etc... not only for your enjoyment but to attract our fine feathered friends. Discover a flower you've never seen before or a flowery scent. Where is it coming from?

Been looking awhile for that perfect place for your special upcoming occasion? Eureka, you've found it! We look forward to hearing from you soon and having you as our guests at Flying Toucans. :) John and Mary

About the Owner

Greetings from our villa called Flying Toucans! We first visited Costa Rica in November of 1998 on our honeymoon. Having both lived on Maui for many years and traveled extensively internationally, we were interested in a new adventure and a memorable challenge. We had read about the country for several years prior to our visit and it sounded as though Costa Rica fit all of our criteria. After exploring the various regions of the country, meeting the people and having a delightful time we knew we were destined to relocate. As it happened, on this first trip, we discovered this one-of-a-kind property and purchased it. This set in motion our plans of eventually relocating. After more preparation, we made the move and actually lived in a tent on the property for several months while designing Flying Toucans. This allowed us to understand how best to showcase the awesome views and the wildlife while combining luxury with tropical living. Now that Flying Toucans has become a reality, we offer to share it with you. With years of experience in the luxury tourism industry, we believe we have created a truly unique beautiful place for you to call home while you embark on your own adventures. If you have been looking and looking for that special destination you will never forget, you have found it! Hope to see you here soon, :) John and Mary Reilly

Guestbook comments from the owner

My sister, Tamara, has given your house and property the ultimate recommendation. She has been struggling with what to come back as in her next life ... a beach dog or a whale. Well, now she's decided to come back as your home! ... We have rented 7 houses in the area over the past 10 years and Flying Toucans is at the top of our list.

There is a reason this house has all 5 stars!

  • 5 of 5
All of the previous reviews are spot on. An absolute paradise! I chose this house based solely on the proximity of wildlife. Within the first 30 minutes on the first morning I identified over 15 varieties of birds. There are dozens of hummingbirds on the bushes surrounding the pool daily. We saw so many toucans (or probably the same ones!) we lost count. We feared we would not see any monkeys or sloths after not seeing any for the first two days. Fear not! When the monkeys come... you will hear them! It sounds like a monkey army coming through the way the trees rustle and swing about. The white faced monkeys are feisty and sneaky. So entertaining! We spotted the sloth on day three and he stuck around for four days. After going to Manuel Antonio (an easy hour drive) we had a better idea of what to look for to locate sloths. They are very quiet and you have to have an eagle eye to spot them initially. Such odd and fascinating creatures.

The roads in the entire area are paved and the driving was very easy. It was an easy drive from San Jose and would definitely fly into there rather than Quepos (you will see what I mean when you see the Quepos "airport"). Cuna del Angel's restaurant (the resort down the road) was a Godsend on the days we were too tired to cook or drive any where. We also really loved Por Que No as well as Tortilla Flats in Dominical (a cool little beach bar). Definitely check out the ex-pat bar Jolly Roger - just across the road and up the "hill." Good times. Felt like Cheers.

As for local activities we highly recommend Diamante Verde ATV excursions. Close by and Karl was an awesome guide. If you want to offshore fish we hands down recommend JP Sportfishing out of Quepos (45 min drive south). Sailfish and Mahi mecca! Amazing trip and the hardest working mates that I have ever had!

I highly suggest taking a small wireless speaker if you want music by the pool. The wildlife will not be scared by the music at all! I was surprised about that at first, but we still saw the same number of birds and animals with or without the music. One HUGE plus about FT - the wireless at the house is excellent. We constantly had 4 devices on and we never had reception interruption. At night we even had two iPads streaming Netflix at the same time.

I cannot recommend this house enough. A great, quiet area to serve as a home base. Easy drive to major touristy attractions, but just far enough away to be in your own little paradise. Just book it!

Owner's Response: Thanks you guys for taking the time to write a review. As far as the abundant wildlife, we plant various trees and flowers around the home to attract them. When we first bought the property we never saw a sloth, now we have several, and Tarzan the sloth is the proud father of many of them. Glad you spotted them, they are elusive to many. And some guests call our home "Flying Monkeys" but we'll stick with Flying Toucans.
Come back and visit again soon!

Holy View!

  • 5 of 5
We just returned from vacation in heaven, and cannot stop talking about it!
The view, the wildlife, the adventurous excursions, the food, the culture, the house- all not to be believed. It is a 3 hour drive from the airport, but SO, SO worth the trip!
Aside from the obvious- the view, wildlife, house, we would highly recommend doing the whitewater rafting through Dominical Surf Adventures (our favorite excursion), set up by the fantastic manager, Daryl. Hacienda Baru, the local zip line, was perfect for first timers. The kayak tour to the caves at the beautiful Playa Ventana, followed by a waterfall visit and swim in Uvita was a great day, as well as walking the Whale's Tail, and strolling along Dominical beach.
When relaxing, we lounged in the beautiful infiniti pool and took in the nature- toucans, white faced monkeys, hummingbirds, other beautiful birds etc.
Unfortunately, we did not know to make a reservation to Cafe Exotica in advance (we were there during high season), so were unable to get a reservation, but a delicious consolation was Citrus.... really cool, rainforest chic, for lack of a better description, with delicious food. Por Que No? had fabulous views (ask to eat on the lower level near the water) and delicious food.
Fresh, delicious fruit can be found right on the highway just south of the villa- the best pineapple ever!
This is getting too lengthy, so if you are still reading this, just know that if you book here you can not go wrong. Your eyes will not believe the beauty around you!!
Thank you so much to John and Mary, for your vision, and for sharing your heaven with us! We will return one day!!

It's about the spectacular view!

It's about the spectacular view!

This was our first trip to Costa Rica and although I did lots of research prior to our trip, I wasn't totally sure what to expect. We arrived in the dark (and it gets dark at 5:30PM) so we couldn't appreciate the perfect setting of Flying Toucans until the next morning. My favorite part of our experience was the privilege of rising at first light and enjoying the sunrise every day (at 5:30 AM)on the balcony, appreciating the glorious colors of the sky as the tides came in and watching the tropical creatures as they came in to visit. Actually, the view is so spectacular at any time of the day with a constant show of wildlife, you will find it very difficult to leave when you have activities planned. This was the rainy season which I didn't fully understand but it was perfect for us -- on most days we didn't see rain until later in the afternoon or evening and when it rained, we quite enjoyed the experience of the tropical downpour.
Flying Toucans was perfect for the two couples on our trip and we loved that the living room was actually outside. Even the kitchen shutters opened to take in that gorgeous view of the infinity pool and the Pacific . Clearly the owner’s thought of every detail in design and location, the house manager came to meet us on our arrival in the dark and was a font of information about the area during our stay since he has been a resident for many years; he goes above and beyond to make your stay perfect yet he knows exactly the right balance between being available and giving you your privacy . We took a side trip to Manuel Antonio one day which we thoroughly enjoyed (the benefit of traveling to Costa Rica in the rainy season, is the crowds are much smaller). When we returned to Flying Toucans that evening after walking on every available trail, climbing every step and seeing lots of wildlife, the grounds person surprised us all with a Pipa Fria which I think was the most refreshing beverage I have ever tasted!
Having a cell phone for local phone calls was a nice feature and since we turned our USA phones off except for Wifi, it was something we found very useful -- thank you!
All in all, Flying Toucans made our first visit to Costa Rica, one we will never forget and we highly recommend this property. It really was paradise!

Owner's Response: Thanks Mike and Stephanie for writing a wonderful review. So many avoid the rainy season thinking it will ruin their vacation but those who come are delighted to find out how nice it is. We prefer it over the dry season as the mix of sunshine and afternoon thunderstorms is very refreshing. Come back and stay with us again when you get that itch that you just can't stay away any longer!

Paradise, As Advertised

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at the Flying Toucans in early June. We are a family of 4, including 9 and 11 year old girls. It was an experience of a lifetime! This property is spectacular and immaculate. It offers relaxation, incredible views, a wonderful pool, and every comfort you could wish for. There is an abundance of wildlife which is entertaining in itself. It's obvious that John and Mary have gone the extra mile. Daryl was a fantastic resource, and Joiner did a splendid job keeping everything in top notch condition.
Every previous review rates it a 5-star, with good reason. I second every positive comment that others have left.
Here are some extra tidbits that may help enhance your experience.
We had every intention to prepare our own meals, but quickly discovered that the local restaurants were fabulous and very reasonable. Specifically, Porque No, Exotica, and Parcella. Be sure to find these places in the daylight, as finding them at night can be tricky.
We flew in and out of Liberia, a 5-hour drive. The roads were surprisingly good, much better than I expected. Road signs could have been better. I recorded my rental car inspection as a precaution, just to avoid any unpleasant surprises when I dropped it off at the airport. We rented a Yaris, which was adequate for the driving we did.
The Whale's tail and horseback riding were fantastic. Lounging in the pool and admiring the views filled out our week.
A splendid vacation all around!
Thanks John and Mary! We've recommended Flying Toucans to our friends, and hope to visit again some time.

Yes, it's exactly how it looks in the pictures. Wonderful, private, immaculate home. John and Mary have dedicated a lot of thought and pride into this home and it shows.Sometimes descriptions seem too good to be true. Not the case here. My family thoroughly enjoyed our stay. I've rented in Central America for over 10 years and this home is a gem. Go ahead, book it!

absolutely fantastic

  • 5 of 5
It is really hard to write yet another review without repeating what other reviewers have said.

The property itself is immaculate, way above anything we have ever rented (we almost always rent a house on our vacation). As many have already stated, you could just stay there for the entire week, without going to the beach or taking trips and your vacation would be wonderful. Sipping cocktails by the pool while watching monkeys and listening to the ocean, all in absolute privacy (jungle is literally all around you) was fantastic. That said, we did the obligatory horse riding, zip line, beaches and restaurants - it was all very nice, but we were always so glad to come back to the house and jump into the pool.

We can't wait to come back

Owner's Response: Thank you Neven for the super review. I see that word immaculate often in our reviews... sure puts the pressure on! Our goal is to provide the recipe for the best vacation ever for our guests. Since most of our guests have to wait quite a while with high expectations before finally getting here really makes us happy to see just about everyone so overjoyed staying at FT. :)

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Quepos at 25 Miles Nearest Barpub : nice tropical outdoor feel at 500 Metres Nearest Golf : new course in San Buenas at 20 Miles Nearest Motorway : newly paved at 1 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : great food in a casual yet classy atmosphere at 500 Metres Nearest Ski : Taos? :) at 1000 Miles Nearest Beach : beautiful, down in front of villa at 300 Metres Car: recommended

The area between Dominical and Uvita on the southern Pacific coast is famous for its striking landscape where the mountains come right down to the water. Not subject to the north's dry, dusty season during the months of December to April, visitors to the Dominical region will enjoy the year-round greenery and lushness of jungles and forests.

While the rural airport in Quepos (30 minutes north of Flying Toucans) may be used, many guests choose to begin their adventure from the main international airport in San Jose (SJO) thus allowing them to see the varied landscape on the way down. The drive down to the villa is 3 hours, not including how many times you stop to take in the awesome views en route. Flying Toucans is six miles south of Dominical on a perfect road. If you can ever pull yourself away from the villa and view you will find abundant choices of dining, shopping, and activities close by.

Other Activities: Ziplines, nature treks, kayaking tours, white water rafting, atv tours

Golf: Besides the new golf course there's LOTS to do around here: Bird and animal watching, surfing, swimming, beach-combing, hiking, horseback tours to beaches and waterfalls, zip lines, day trips to Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park, butterfly farm, serpentaria (snake exhibition), ultra-light flightseeing tours, sport fishing.

About an hour north of us is Quepos (Manuel Antonio National Park). The casual village of Dominical offers international and local style dining, a bank/ATM, a bakery, small grocery stores, an English-speaking doctor and dentist, pharmacy, real estate offices, souvenir shops, internet cafe, surfboard rentals and visitor information and booking services for local activities. A 2-minute walk from the villa is a small and beautiful European hotel with fine dining and full spa services. The villages of Uvita and Bahia, 6 miles south, offer internet, shops, restaurants, beaches, boat tours, a butterfly farm and the lovely Ballena National Park, home of the 'Whale Tail' (as is seen from Flying Toucans). Obviously absent from our corner of the world are large numbers of tourists, suits/ties/pantyhose and traffic lights... come see for yourself!
