3 bedrooms, 2 ½ bathrooms, sleeps 7

This is a very central, but private, location in the small fishing village of Tarcoles. It's an oceanfront property with a beautiful view of the Pacific and you are able to watch magnificent sunsets from the large covered front porch or raised gazebo. Scarlet macaws fly over morning and evening going to and from their feeding grounds and often spend time throughout the day in the trees on and around the property. You can walk on the beach for miles, sometimes without seeing another soul! Less than a 10 minute drive to the north is the Tarcoles River where you often see huge crocodiles basking in the sun.

The house is very comfortable and has a lovely bar on the front porch. Both front and back have large covered areas to sit under and relax, after a busy day of sightseeing. As an added bonus, our English speaking manager is available to help you out with car rentals, tours or anything else that you need.

Professionally managed with a personal touch by a property owner who cares!

Area : Our manager is very helpful. She will even stock the fridge before you arrive!

You can buy fresh fish for your supper, right off the boats, from the Cooperativa only a two minute walk down the road or, if you prefer, you can go to one of the many restaurants within a few minutes drive. For all your grocery needs, Jaco boasts a new, very modern grocery store.

We are five minutes from Carara Biological Reserve where you are able to hike for hours and view the nesting boxes of the macaws. You will also see many other varieties of birds and animals.

We are only 20 minutes north of Jaco, a major surfing area, and an easy one hour and 45 minute drive north of the beautiful Manuel Antonio Park where you can see white-faced and spider monkeys swinging through the trees, or perhaps a sloth, moving in slow motion through the branches.

If you are looking for a home away from home, where you can get in touch with nature & see the real Costa Rica, look no further than 'Casa Sammie.

Amenities and Activities: We now have a raised gazebo at the side of the house for amazing views of the Pacific & the sunset. At the back is a large covered patio and a beautiful private pool. We've recently added a bodega next to the house with an additional bathroom and a roomy bedroom that sleeps 2 more people. Very nice & private.

Phone, Satellite TV, Full Kitchen, Microwave, Coffee Maker, Refrigerator, Blender, Toaster Oven, Cooking Utensils provided, Linens and towels provided, Clothes Washer, Charcoal Grill (BBQ), Maid Service available for a small fee, Hot Showers & hot water in the kitchen, Air Conditioners in two of the bedrooms.

Activities: Hiking in Carara Park, Golf, Fishing, Wildlife Viewing, Horseback Riding, Sightseeing, Swimming, Surfing, Birdwatching, Zip Line Canopy Tours, Butterfly Farm, Gorgeous Waterfall - hike to the bottom and swim in the natural pools, Crocodile Tours.

Area: We are only a 1 1/4 hr. drive from the airport in San Jose and, as we are in a central location, it is easy to take many tours and excursions

Tours, Shopping and More Photos : Don't miss a tour with Tico-Style Tours. Gino is a neighbour who will take you - fishing for a day; to beautiful white sand beaches for a swim; snorkelling, where you will see an amazing assortment of tropical fish; jigging for fish; touring the coastline; diving for lobster, which he will cook for you, along with the fish that you've caught, on a grill at a private beach; to visit a waterfall; or, he will put together a tour including all or any of the above. His wife, Maria, is an excellent cook who will deliver your supper right to the house or come in and cook for you. We highly recommend them. You'll have a true Costa Rican experience!

There's a modern grocery store just 15 min. south and Jaco (20 min.) has many great places to shop.

We have lots more photos of the house & surrounding area that we'd be happy to share with you. Just click on the link below for 'more photos of this home and area'. You can also check out our video online by clicking on the 'virtual tour' link below.

Visit #6 - still as exhilarating as visit#1

  • 5 of 5
We have just returned from our 6th visit to Casa Sammie - now feels like home but never grows old! #6 was as memorable as #1, already looking forward to #7. The Casa Sammie pool is still the highlight of the visit. A dip in the pool with a full moon directly overhead - an experience you should not miss. Feeding the iguanas at the end of the pool (they love papaya) is still great fun. Scarlet macaws put on afternoon performances in the big tree near the pool. A new birding highlight at Casa Sammie on visit #6 - a pair of gray-necked wood-rails passing through the backyard and across the pool deck at 6:30am. A thrill to see this elusive bird. For the first time we got to eat bananas from the backyard - bananas from the grocery store will never be quite the same even if they are from Costa Rica. Hoping that on the next visit we will get to eat a pineapple from the backyard. Fresh fruit from the stands along the highway north of Tarcoles was excellent - already miss our daily fresh fruit smoothie for breakfast. The watermelons were exceptionally good this trip - going to be hard to enjoy an Ontario grocery store watermelon. And finally, the lobster dinner prepared by Maria - words can't describe it, you need to experience it! Maria you are a wonderful cook! We re-visited our favourite Costa Rica excursion - Discovery Horseback Tours ( Enjoyed the Jungle Spa ride again and an awesome new early morning ride along a deserted beach. If you have never been on a horse before but would like to try it Discovery Horseback Tours is the place to go. Now for the new excursions on visit #6. Big thank you to Patri for suggesting a new location for zip lining - Vista Los Suenos at Herradura. The tractor and wagon ride up the mountain was different and the 12 cable flight down was amazing. The second last cable was the steepest and fastest zip line ride we have been on. Doka Estates coffee tour ( - 2 hour drive northeast) was interesting and educational - learned how coffee gets from a cherry-like fruit to your cup. Tour at Villa Vanilla ( - 2 hour drive south) was also a great outing. Learned amazing things about vanilla (the seed pod of an orchid), cinnamon and many other spices.
As I write this at 11pm on a very cold, wintry Saturday night in Ontario the memory of the moonlight swims in the Casa Sammie pool makes me feel a bit warmer. We shall return to refresh that memory.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for this wonderful review. It's great to hear that you're still finding new activities to do and experience, even after many visits. We're at Casa Sammie about three times a year and, you are so right, every trip brings something new - a different bird, a new friend, an exciting tour - it never gets stale. We look forward to having you back anytime!

Lucky #7 - Pura Vida indeed!!

For our 7th stay at Casa Sammie we opted for something different-we visited during the last two weeks in November-tail end of the rainy season and we loved it. Yes it rained while we were there, mostly in the afternoon, but the rain never interfered with the enjoyment of our trip. We planned our outings for early morning, which we usually do anyway and we were not rained out once. Did not try dancing in the rain-did try swimming in the rain in the Casa Sammie pool, a wonderful experience though it cannot surpass a full moon night swim. Went for a walk in the rain-a refreshing experience. So if you are planning a trip to Casa Sammie and December to March are booked-try November, you will enjoy it! For this trip we had our friend Sandi join us for her first trip to Costa Rica. One of the pleasures of Tarcoles is the ability to mingle with the locals in a non-tourist setting. Sandi is an avid bingo player so on a Sunday afternoon we went to a fundraising bingo at the Tarcoles school. To be able to make a small contribution to the local community while having an enjoyable outing was heart warming. Special thanks to Lourdes for translating during the bingo games. Having Sandi with us for her first visit gave us an opportunity to re-experience our first trip to Costa Rica in 2007. We did the Jungle Crocodile Safari boat trip again-it was better than we remember from 2007. We had a knowledgeable guide, saw Howler monkeys for the first time, lots of birds and of course crocodiles. We found a great guide, Maurice Vazquez, for a trek in Carara Park. The best way to experience the park is with a guide. Maurice took us on a trail in the north part of the park which offered great opportunity for wildlife viewing - saw Howler monkeys again. Maurice did a great job taking photos through his spotting scope using my Blackberry camera. Keep in mind that these two great outings are only a 10 minute drive from Casa Sammie! Maurice Vazquez: great knowledge+good English=excellent guide. We left his contact information in the Casa Sammie book. Maurice also contributed to a new #1 highlight for our Costa Rica vacations. Maurice took us on a night hike on Playa Heramosa. While a thunderstorm raged far out on the Pacific we got to see a sea turtle laying eggs-repeating a ritual that has gone on for thousands of years. An experience hard to describe in words. What Costa Rica has to offer within a short distance of Casa Sammie never ceases to amaze. We shall return!

Owner's Response: WOW! What can we say but a huge Thank You for another wonderful review. You are exactly the kind of people who we try to attract - people who are not nervous to get out into the community, and surrounding countryside, and experience the "real" Costa Rica. We really appreciate that you took the time to write this great review and certainly look forward to your return visit.

We miss going to sleep by the sounds of the Rainforest, waking up to the Macaws in the Almond tree, being in the pool while watching the hummingbirds get nectar from the flowers that surround it. Priceless are the sunsets we watched from the gazebo. We found that regardless of how many travels we take, the time we spend at Casa Sammie & what this beautiful place has to offer us = Priceless!
We bought fresh snapper & sea bass at the cooperative. This is a small village, when the people know if you are looking they will find you. Thank you Ramon & Wilbur for finding us with lobster that we could enjoy on our last night  We loved grilling out by the pool watching the crabs come out of their holes.
This year we traveled to Dominical, Uvita, Puntarenas, Quepos and 3 times to Orotina which we have found to be a nice little city full of surprises. A park in that city (Parque Jose’ Marti) has sloths that we couldn’t believe were there just hanging out! We frequented La Puesta Del Sol in Herrudera. At the only yellow light, drive toward Pacific @ the end of the road. Enjoy charter fishing boats, locals as well as Los Suenos guests that wander off the resort property. Chepe’s is a great place that we walked to many evenings after sunset. I found Chepe’s to have the BEST ceviche I tasted during this trip. I took big orders home to have as appetizers before dinners. In Orotina there’s a great place after you exit into the city called Barra 750 #2. Its chef driven; the food is great & well priced. We went back to Los Congo’s. You might see the hollering monkeys but if not; the live music and food are worth it.
We took an adventure where the sign along the highway says: Pura Vida Gardens & Waterfall. A small road that leads to the highest waterfall in Costa Rica. You can drive to the top or stop at the entrance to the trail leading to the vista point. It’s breathtaking!
A chef at heart, I was like a kid in a candy shop with the new oven/range & thought it was a birthday present! We are sad @ the loss of Sammie. A sweetheart that greeted us when we came home & guarded the casa at night. We truly love Casa Sammie, treasure our time there & can’t wait to come back. Anyone who’s hit this site while looking for a casa in Costa Rica stop looking because you found the perfect location & casa to fill your dreams of living Pura Vida! Patri, our dear friend, we miss you & can’t wait to see you next year! Til próximo año Lynn y Larry no podemos esperar!

Pura Vida !

This was our first time travel to Costa Rica and Casa Sammie did not disappoint. It is so peaceful and relaxing. Patri, the manager, was very informative and helpful throughout our stay. It's a great central location to take day trips such as Manuel Antonio National Park, local beaches and Jaco. The property is beautifully maintained and very comfortable. For a dinner out, Steve and Lisa's has great pizza and the fresh fish at the Cooperative is delicious on the b.b.q. I definitely recommend this vacation rental to friends and family.

Paradise - Exceeded our expectations!

Continued - Part 2
Another unexpected little gesture that was very warming and gives us a feeling of acceptance. We certainly were not regulars at Chepes Bar but did have a few meals there and spoke with the waitress and owner. On our last day the waitress sent down a plate of fish appetizers to the house, again another totally unexpected act of kindness that added to our overall love of the area and people.
Casa Sammie was perfectly located and the house was clean and well equipped for everything you need. The many locations at the house to sit and enjoy your surroundings from the pool side, gazebo, or the front sitting area. Quite frankly it was hard to read a book with so much to look at from the macaws and other birds, plants, flowers, lizards, frogs, absolutely breath taking.
We were so sad to leave and definitely plan on returning.
Thank you Lynne and Larry for sharing your little piece of paradise with us and for entrusting your property to Patri to manage any affairs in a friendly and professional manner. Pura Vida!!

Owner's Response: We are so very excited to get this wonderful review. You are exactly the kind of guests that we try to attract, and love to have stay at our home away from home. Getting to know the local Costa Ricans and participating in the village life is what it's all about when you stay at Casa Sammie and that's also what can make your holiday such an enriching experience. You've given future guests a really good idea of what life is like in Tarcoles. As you stated, we try to make sure that our guests get as much information as possible before leaving so that they know exactly what to expect and hopefully will not have any unpleasant surprises. However, as you said, it's great to have some pleasant ones! We are very happy that you had such a good time and that you took the time to let others know about it. You are certainly welcome back any time. Hasta pronto, Lynn and Larry

Paradise - Exceeded our expectations!

Part 1
We (2 couples in our fifties) arrived at the airport and were greeted by our driver (arranged by Patri), he shared useful information about the local culture and pointed out landmarks along the way. Immediately after entering Casa Sammie any inhibitions we had were quickly drifting away, the accommodations were exactly as we expected from pictures and information on the website. Even arriving after sunset we still were overwhelmed by the tropical beauty of the property. We had made arrangements with Patri to have some groceries when we arrived so we were all set for a couple of days to just sit down and relax and take in the absolute beauty of the flowers and plants, the grounds were intoxicating.
Our first day we walked around the town and felt very comfortable and quickly made acquaintances with the locals at Chepes Bar and the grocery store. A bond with the resident pet Sammie (dog) was made and she soon accompanied us for walks down the beach. We had brought some dog treats from home so it wasn’t hard to become a hit with the local dogs.
Early in our vacation we met Gino and took his hiking, fishing, snorkeling, and lobster on the beach tour. This was definitely one of the highlights of the trip and we had a delicious meal prepared by Gino’s wife Maria. We quickly connected with this hospitable and lovely family.
Patri arranged a crocodile, Jaco beach and zip-lining tour for us, all the tours she recommended were provided by reputable operators and we definitely appreciated her coordinating this for us.
One day when out for our daily stroll we suddenly were right in the midst of quite the down pour, as my husband and I took shelter under a banana tree we were beckoned over by a family who provided us shelter until the rain subsided. The family couldn’t speak English and our Spanish is very limited. We had an enjoyable experience and it was the little unexpected events that added to our holiday. My husband would mix up a beverage each night and head to the water for sunsets, two locals would be fishing for their dinner off the shore each night and offered the fishing pole to my husband.

Owner's Response: As there are two parts to this outstanding review, we'll respond at the end of "Part 2" shown above.

From the Owner

After travelling throughout Costa Rica for 4 years we decided to buy in Tarcoles. Our decision was based on the fact that it's one of the only places left where you see the beautiful Scarlet Macaws every day. Another important factor was that it's located just over one hour from the San Jose airport, which makes it very handy for us, and our guests, to get to. It's also centrally located for easy access to many of the attractions that tourists want to see.

Activity and Interests

Car: recommended

We are located 1 1/4 hrs. drive west of the international airport in San Jose, in the town of Tarcoles. It is about 20 min. north of the major tourist city, Jaco, which is known for its great surfing. As an alternative, you can also drive from the international airport in Liberia, Guanacaste to Casa Sammie in 2 1/2 hrs.

We recommend that you have a car for more flexibility in visiting the many natural areas and parks within an easy drive of the house, such as the Tarcoles river, Carara Park and spectacular waterfalls. Manuel Antonio Park, a beautiful reserve where you can see monkeys, sloths and iguanas is a scenic 1 3/4 hrs. drive south.

From the Owner

As we're in a small fishing village, not a tourist town or gated community, you will have a chance to see what life in Costa Rica is really like. You'll see fishermen walking down the road with their daily catch, kids playing soccer just down the road, locals swimming in the river at the end of the road, Peepo getting a load of sand with his team of oxen, as well as many other local sights. We have lots of birds, iguanas, butterflys, etc. who come to visit daily, as we've spent time improving the gardens around the pool and at the side of the house in order to attract them. You'll always be surrounded by flowers as you float in the private pool or walk through the property. The views of the sun setting over the ocean, from our raised gazebo, are truly stunning. Many guests have told us that it's the 'room' that they use the most.
