Home 2 bedrooms / 2 bathrooms. Cabana 1 bedroom /1 bathroom

The first thing people usually say after arriving at the Posada Colonial is that 'The pictures don't do it justice'. We are confident from our reviews that you, your family and your friends will feel the same way.

We are central, yet secluded, with patios, balconies and grounds looking on to the world famous Arenal Volcano. This Almendro home has a wrap-around balcony, is gated and very private. We have wi-fi, cable and Sky TV, indoor and outdoor dining with flowers, birds and butterflies everywhere. It is a natural paradise.

We are near the charming town of La Fortuna, and our area is famous for its diversity of interests. These include bird watching, river rafting, jungle cruises, jungle canopy tours, butterfly farms, horseback riding, world famous spas and hot springs or relaxing and enjoying the best views of the spectacular Arenal Volcano. And because we are well located on the main road, all is within easy access. I encourage everyone who is planning on visiting to read the reviews of our home to help determine your decision for your visit to this lovely part of the world.

We have been a Bed and Breakfast for about 15 years, with excellent reviews in the guide books, Our housekeeper/cook Miriam is local, friendly, helpful and has developed a great reputation for her breakfasts, which you can read about in the reviews. She is the soul of the place.

Security: Although the property is on the main road, with easy access to all the local attractions, it is gated, fenced, on a partial rise, and thus very safe and private. The newly formed 'tourist police' make regular checks with all the property owners.

Beginning in the new year (2015) we will also be looking at long term rentals

About the Owner

I'm a Canadian who came here in 1993 for a combination of adventure and investment. I built a home in La Palma overlooking Arenal Volcano, and because of the shortage of places for people to stay gradually became involved in tourism. It has been a wonderful experience meeting people from all over the world. When it comes to the wonders of nature, everyone reacts in a similar way. Awe, respect, wonder and delight.

Two friends and I recently visited Arenal and stayed at this wonderful home just outside of La Fortuna. We had a great time, mostly because of the wonderful hospitality of the owner and his staff. The home itself is beautiful with wonderful views of the volcano and rainforest. Grant went out of his way to help us plan our stay: he helped set up various excursions and provided great recommendations on things to do. Miriam cooked amazing breakfasts every morning, and we couldn't have asked for more. It made everything so easy. If I ever return to Arenal, I will certainly want to stay here again!

We loved the property and the "rain forest" backyard, surrounded by beautiful flower bushes, tropical fruit trees, colorful birds and butterflies, even hummingbirds. We saw an interesting animal - Coati walking by in one morning. Excellent view of the Volcano Arenal from the porch while we enjoyed the Costa Rican coffee and delicious home made breakfast. It was truly a feel in the tropical heaven. You don't really need to travel to various Volcano viewing spot. This property gives the best viewing angle.

The house is in between Tabacon Hot Spring and La Fortuna. It is conveniently located within a short driving distance to almost every activity this area can offer, including zipline, lake water sports, volcano hiking, butterfly observatory, hot springs, waterfall, grocery, and restaurants. And yet, the location gives a healthy distance from the crowd that you can easily enjoy your privacy.

One of the highlights of our stay is the meal we had. Miriam came to cook breakfast for us every morning, from western style to local specialties. I never knew the combination of the rice and bean can be so delicious. It couldn't be any better to start a morning with the freshly cut tropical fruit platter. We loved her cooking so much that we asked her to cook a dinner for us in one of the nights. I can tell she put a lot of thoughts to it and designed a wonderful full course dinner for us. Even Mireya came to help preparing. They did such an excellent job. That dinner was one of the best meals we had in the entire trip. Thank you Miriam and Mireya.

We stayed for 3 nights, had a wonderful time, and wish it can be longer. I highly recommend this place and certainly will come back again.

Incredible Experience

We stayed here for 5 nights. It truly is a bird lovers paradise! The house is perfect but the setting is unforgettable. We took a Costa Rican bird book and identified over 30 species of birds from our porch! We saw a sloth (thanks to the property managers who pointed it out to us) just across the street. Really beautiful setting with many wonderful things to do a very short drive away. We did whitewater rafting, hanging bridges, hot springs, waterfall hike, zip-lining and more. We also found time to lounge and watch the birds.

One of the most incredible aspects of this house is the people. Miraim came every day and made unbelievable breakfasts. She actually IS everything people say she is in these reviews. Amazing food! Also, Mireya and Omar stayed in the casita on the property (property managers) and made sure that we had everything we needed. The owner called to check on us to make sure we arrived safely. Everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful,..... true pleasure to meet.

I want to live there!!! You will NOT be disappointed!

Bird lover paradise

We stayed for only 3 nights. This is a very nice place. The 3rd bedroom is above the carport. There are wrap around porches on both floors of the house. Part of our group are bird watchers and they had plenty of birds to watch. There was a pair of toucans that can ever day to the tree near by. Miriam made AWSOME breakfast every day. The only bad thing was the noise. There is traffic because of the main road and at night Mother Nature gets a little loud. If your a light sleeper bring some earplugs. But we enjoyed our stay and would stay here again if we ever come back.

Grant's home is fantastic. Everything you need to relax and enjoy your time there. It's completely private, yet located on the main road......this made getting around extremely convenient. Hot Springs and tons of outdoor adventure are within an easy walk or drive.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind words, Russ, and I'll certainly pass them along to Miriam. As you know we don't advertise at all so these reviews mean everything to us. Cheers, and I hope you enjoyed the remainder of your holiday in Costa Rica as much as you did in La Posada!

Excellent getaway spot!

Christine and Ian were awesome hosts that provided us with a wealth of information to help us decide on our desired adventures which we enjoyed oh so much. Miriam made an awesome breakfast each morning during our stay and is an excellent asset for this property. She deserves kuddos for her ability to cook and clean and perhaps an increase in her salary? :-) Thank you so very much for an awesome time.

Just perfect: house, gardens, service, all perfect

You cannot ask for anything more: reasonably priced, safe, convenient, would go back for Miriam's breakfast right now! Feed the birds and you will enjoy the company of more than 30 different types of birds during breakfast. Fast internet like we did not have in the entire country; this house provided the comfort we needed after one week roughing it out in Sierpe and Tortuguero.

There were 8 of us: two couples one each in each of the master bedrooms and 4 preteens in the adjacent cabina. We hiked to the top of Cerro Chato and swam in the lake in its carter, ziplined thorugh and over the canopy, walked over hanging bridges, and went to The Springs (2 days for one ticket). And more. Also, the steak at Cascajos is outstanding. The house is close to everything -restaurants, attractions, spas- but not too close. And it offers the best views of the volcano.

The owner is a dear and lives close by for anything you may need. Take advantage of this property before it is sold!!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for that!!

Miriam, as you know, really deserves a lot of credit for making this place what it is, and I'll be sure to pass along your compliments.

All the very best from both of us, and thank you again!

From the Owner

When I decided on Costa Rica as a place to live in and invest I knew very little about the country, apart from its positive reputation. It was only later that I realized I needed a 'where' in Costa Rica. After driving around the country for a week or so I arrived in La Fortuna and immediately knew that this was where I wanted to be. It was something I still can't explain. I built the home, which eventually evolved into a B and B, about two years after arriving. I drove a fifth wheel down here from Vancouver and lived in that until my home was complete.

Activity and Interests

Car: recommended

The area has many famous natural springs heated underground by the Volcano, and is also famous for its birds and other wild life, and its easy access to rain forests, Lake Arenal is the largest lake in Costa Rica and just a few minutes away by car.and is known for world famous rafting and wind surfing Of course there are canopy tours, horse rentals to the famous La Fortuna waterfall (and other areas as well). It's very easy to fill in an entire week enjoying all the natural activities in the area without doing the same thing twice.

From the Owner

The Nicaraguan and Costa Rican people Ive become friends with over the years have enhanced my life immeasurably. As well. the climate, the greenery, fresh air, the birds and, of course, the volcano, all serve to make this area a very special place in the world.

  • We have a housekeeper who will have everything prepared for your arrival. The house is situated on the Rio La Palma which is a short hike down to the bottom of the property. Across the small river, actually a large creek, is jungle. Monkeys visit regularly but at times known only to them. We have feeders so there are always plenty of birds around. Deer, wild boar, pesote, and other animals have also been sited. Of course there is an abundance of flowers as well. It s a very comfortable home which fits into the surrounding ambiance quite naturally. There are interesting views everywhere. It is private and enclosed yet near everything the area has to offer.
