4 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Convertible bed(s), Sleeps 11

Buckhorn Lake Cabin is a beautiful, new log cabin built by my husband, and surrounded by pine trees and large wrap-around deck with view of Buckhorn Lake, a quiet, no-wake lake. The cabin is officially designated a no-stress zone. The 2,200-foot cabin sleeps 11, and has two full baths. It’s heritage living, but with all the amenities of home including dishwasher, microwave, jacuzzi, stone fireplace, heat, and air conditioning. The perfect place to get reacquainted with family, friends, nature and you. So grab some floats and tubes and jump into the lake, sunbathe, read on the deck, play music and board games in front of the stone fireplace, engage in a ping-pong tournament in the family room, create a great meal and enjoy one another, relax by the fire pit and roast some marshmallows, ice fish, cross country ski or take a walk and look at the stars or the wildlife.

Offically Designated No Stress Zone: The cabin is perfect for a romantic weekend, family gatherings, women’s or men’s get-togethers and spiritual or business retreats. Or come for a solo retreat and stoke-up your batteries. Located one mile from Hatfield, Wisconsin and 11 miles from Black River Falls, Wisconsin, the area looks like the “North Woods,” just closer! The cabin is approximately 2 1/2 hrs. from Minneapolis and Saint Paul, 3 hrs. from Milwaukee, 4 1/2 hrs. from Chicago, 2 hrs. from Madison, 1 hr and 15 minutes from the Dells. One mile away is Lake Arbutus, an 839-acre lake with boat and jet-ski rentals, boat ramps, picnic areas, beaches and playgrounds and an indoor roller skating ring. Discover treasures at the local Flea Market/Craft Show.

Great recreation on site or near by: There are loads of recreational activities available during all four seasons without ever having to get into your car. Just walk out the front door. Buckhorn Lake is across our road and is connected to a canal, linked to other lakes and the Black River. You can canoe, kayak, swim, fish, bike (we have a canoe, two-person kayak and bikes on site) and cross country ski or snowshoe for hours without ever having to get in your car. So throw your car keys away for a while and technology (if you can) and get to know your spouse, family and/or friends or even yourself better.

Don't worry about bad weather: Majestic Pines Casino is nearby, as is a affordable movie theater and antiquing and an affordable fitness center which includes a swimming pool/whirlpool and dry sauna; fitness room ,gymnasium 2 racquetball courts, and a 125 meter suspended walking/running track available. An indoor and outdoor water park is just 1/2 hr away.

About the Owner

My husband, with a little help from me, my son and some friends, built our log cabin over a two- year period. We bought the ten-inch logs from a local man who builds log cabins and owns a lumberyard. The logs were harvested from this man’s sustainable forest. We tried to incorporate recycled and reused materials as well as new green products, such as radiant-heat bamboo flooring. We are just starting to rent the cabin. We hope to find vacationers that will respect and appreciate all the hard work that went into creating the log cabin. We are told by family and friends that the place has wonderful karma. I am a writer and over a one-month period, I wrote a book at the cabin, which will be published shortly. My husband renovates old properties and sells or rents them and is an energy auditor.

spring break success

  • 5 of 5
We had a truly wonderful 5 day vacation here. Everyone had their own room to sleep in and lots of private space for my college aged son and his friend who came on the train from Minneapolis. We picked them up in Tomah, just 45 minutes from the cabin. We cross country skied from the cabin on 10 inches of fresh snow. A REALLY nice kitchen. Every aspect of the cabin was as described in the website. Beds very comfortable. The cabin was well stocked with board games and books and I loved that there was no TV! Leah was incredibly helpful will all of my questions before and during our stay. We will go back again for spring break and bring more friends next time!

Fishing Vacation at Log Cabin at a DRY LAKE!!

  • 3 of 5
The cabin is exactly as the pictures and the description say it is. The loft room upstairs is very neat. The ping pong table in the basement was fun to play on. Bikes were provided to ride around on. We didn't use the firepit but it was an nice private area to have a fire in. The bath takes quite a while to fill because its very deep. The jets were enjoyable. The kitchen has everything you would need to make any meal that you want.

A book of local things to do is provided and includes some maps of the area so you can find other activities and restaurants which is helpful when you aren't from the area.

The property was pretty clean - Little dusty with spider webs in some corners. Outside there is a lot of wood for indoor/outdoor fires and it's covered up to keep it cleaner.

This place would comfortably sleep 8-9 - The bed in the loft was uncomfortable and small more fit for a child but the living room had a futon which was nice.

We started planning our vacation in December 2013. Paid half of the balance upfront and then the rest about 30 days prior to our date of arrival. We found out (after paying the balance) that the lake we were planning swimming, fishing, and canoeing in was going to low. Well when we got there it was completely dry. We were disappointed to find this out especially after doing some research and seeing that it had been planned a little over 2 months prior to our vacation and we found out 3 weeks before. We felt that was information that had been withheld from us until after paying the balance and no discount was given.

There are a few other lakes and rivers nearby that we went to: Lake Arbutus, Trow Lake, Black River, and Wazee. The fishing was terrible at all of them. Wazee would have been good for canoeing but we canoed at Lake Arbutus.

We went to the Cranberry Museum in Warrins - They had wine sampling and icecream at the end. It was nice. If you have a big enough group and schedule ahead of time you can go out to the marshes which would be interesting to see.

Overall the cabin is exactly what it says it is but the name is a little deceiving because the lake is dry - it will be filled at the end of october.

Owner's Response: It sounds like you took advantage of the many the wonderful resources in the area and enjoyed our cabin. A North American Hydro representative, the company that owns the local dam, apologized to us for not notifying us about their plans to do maintenance work on the canal this summer, which affected our lake, but not Lake Arbutus, one mile away. We live 3 ½ hours away.

We found out recently from a neighbor about the water going down on our lake. This is a temporary situation and even though it is completely out of our control, we did offer you a discount that we hope you will take advantage of when the water levels come back up this Autumn. Lake Arbutus, the Black River (also one mile away) and Lake Wazee, do have great swimming, canoeing and kayaking and yes fishing, even though you had bad luck on your visit.

We normally don’t allow our kayak and canoe to be taken off the premises in a car, but because of the water situation this summer, we have reversed our position and you can now take the canoe and kayak on to other gorgeous local lakes and rivers, which there are many! We purchased two canoe car carriers, that we left up at the cabin and a canoe/kayak carrier to transport a boats on land for our guests. We hope all our guests take advantage of the beautiful canoeing and kayaking in our area, as you have. May the fish cooperate too!

Interesting fact: We heard that they took out 5,000 fish out of Buckhorn Lake before they began lowering the lake. North American Hydro will restock our lake after they complete their work this autumn.

My family enjoyed our stay at this cabin.

  • 4 of 5
We enjoyed the peace and quiet. It was a short walk across the road for swimming and kayaking. The surrounding roads were safe and enjoyable for bike riding. It was an easy drive to stores and restaurants. The cabin had everything we needed. All in all, we had a good week.

Our large group of girls stayed the weekend here and had a wonderful time. The cabin was beautiful, very clean and extremely well stocked. We spent a few hours on the lake, which was gorgeous, and enjoyed the grilling and ping pong! I will definitely recommend this cabin to friends, LOVED IT. Thanks so much for a great week end!

much-needed family getaway

  • 5 of 5
My family and I visited the cabin for two nights. It fit all eight of us more than comfortably and it never felt crowded. The kids really enjoyed the ping-pong and foosball tables. The adults enjoyed the peacefulness and tranquility of the location. The cabin was warm, cozy, and clean upon our arrival. It is clear that the host takes great pride in this property, which made us want to take good care of it as well. We were gifted with a lot of deer sightings out of the back windows, which was fun for everyone. The binder with information about surrounding restaurants and things to do was super helpful. We took a side trip to Norske Nook in Osseo, WI and came back to the cabin with full bellies and lots of pie! Yum! Overall, an amazing and much-needed family weekend that we won't soon forget. Thank you so much for sharing your space with us!

Lovely log cabin in the woods!

  • 5 of 5
We really enjoyed our time at this beautiful log home in the woods. The location is very private and peaceful, yet easily accessible and not isolated. Being from the prairies, we really appreciated the beauty of the surrounding forest. The log home is very spacious but cozy and home-like too. It has many artistic touches that give it a lot of character. (Like the Mexican tile in the main floor bath.) The wood stove/fireplace is amazing - it is so easy to use, and very efficient - and NEVER smokes!! It is the best-designed wood stove I have ever seen. The heated bamboo floors are lovely under your feet. We enjoyed many games of ping pong and Foosball, played board games, and went for a lovely walk on the frozen lake. It was a great place to get together with our extended family and relax and just enjoy being together!

Owner's Response: Jill, we appreciate that you noticed all the little touches we made to make our cabin extra special. It seems to attract extra special people too. We hope you can make your visit an anual event. Leah

Location

From the Owner

We bought land here because we wanted a place that we can get to for the weekend that wasn't a long drive, but looked like the North Woods. We have had a camper on the property for a number of years, and have spent wonderful times in the region. We can share information about great hiking trails, where to eat and shop etc. The Black River region is not as well-known as the “North Woods,” but it is closer, less congested and beautiful. My husband loves to come up just to smell the pines and watch the wildlife. We hope you will love the region too!

Amenities

From the Owner

There are so many choices of activities to do without getting in your car. It's so nice to drive-up and stay put. We try to keep the place a no electronic zone, although it is not easy. When we do however, we end-up reading more, playing cards and enjoy quiet thinking time, which is often elusive in our busy lives.

Notes:

  • We have an extra deep jetted tub large enough for 2 adults. I'm not sure if that is considered a jacuzzi or whirlpool. We also have a stroller, and portable high chair and games and adult and children books galore. There are a few steps to get into the cabin. We have purposefully kept the cabin a no electronic zone to provide an opportunity for both adults and children to have a unique experience. We leave it up to guests if they want to bring anything electronic. There is a portable ipod/CD /tape/radio player and clock radio with a CD player. The cabin is a great place to sing, especially from the loft balcony where you can really belt it out. Musical instruments are great to bring too.
