About the Owner

I was born and raised in fabulous Sussex County and spent my summers 'at the beach' in my grandparents' cottage on Hickman Street, where Daddy still lives today. We rode our bikes on the Boardwalk in the mornings. Mommie packed us lunch and took us to the beach every afternoon. We swam, hunted for shells, sunned, read, napped under the umbrella and returned happily 'brown as berries' (sometimes, red as lobsters). My brother was genius at skim boarding. We showered off the day outside in the Sand Shower - Awesome! Daddy always had croquet set up for a nice game before dinner. Evenings were spent on the Boards at Funland, eating Dollies' popcorn, ice cream or chocolates at Candy Kitchen. When we were teens, there was volleyball under the lights on the beach. When my own 4 children were young, I wanted them to share the Rehoboth experience. I had the great, good fortune to buy a wonderful home on Pennsylvania Avenue. Later the Oak Cottage was purchased and lovingly renovated and refurnished. Vera Bradley bedspreads, beautiful dishes, original art, central air-conditioning and a huge porch on which your entire family can stretch out, relax, dine, snooze, read, play games, make the Oak Cottage a home I can share with others looking for a classic, family beach vacation.

Did I mention we love to dance!

Guestbook comments from the owner

My husband and I stayed in The Little Cottage to celebrate our 20th anniversary. It was just the right size for the two of us! The new layout of the kitchen was bright and appealing. We enjoyed breakfast, and jigsaw puzzles, using the bar stools at the counter. The kitchen is not fully equipped, but by planning ahead, it met all of our needs. The bathroom/dressing room is huge, complete with a deep claw foot bathtub that lent itself to long candlelit soaks. The owner had planned ahead by providing candles, bath salts, etc. There was a separate shower, a vanity, and abundant shelves and drawers for storage. One of our favorite things was the large outside sitting area with comfortable lawn chairs and a table to eat meals, in a backyard with trees. We greatly enjoyed our stay at the cottage!!

Oak Cottage

  • 5 of 5
Three generations of our family just spent a wonderful week at this Rehoboth Beach House. The house and guest cottage were beautifully decorated, with extras that made it look like a lived in home. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes, cutlery and cooking items. The lot was shaded by trees, and had lots of comfortable, welcoming outdoor furniture on the porches. It is located very near the beach and within walking distance of the boardwalk, which the grandkids loved. Great experience for everyone and we hope to come back again in 2015!

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure meeting you and your family. The children always enjoy the Boardwalk (children of all ages - 1 to 100) and especially going to the rides at Funland. I'm glad you enjoyed the kitchen. I think the dishes are so pretty! One guest loved them so much, she asked for the pattern name and bought some for her kitchen at home. I try to have everything that you might need right there at your hand. You just cannot beat the porch. There is room for everyone, and as you say, it is very welcoming. It's nice to have such a short - less than half block - walk up to the beach. You can see the sand as soon as you walk out the front door. Please come back next year. I'll be looking for you!

Pictures do not do these cottages justice

  • 5 of 5
The cottage and little cottage are everything described. The HUGE wrap around screen porch is perfect and where my family spent the week, when we were not on the beach. The home is very well equipped yet just a short walk to many restaurants and night life in town or on the boardwalk. We parked the car when we arrived and never moved it. It is a perfect location if you are looking for a week at the beach (less than a block away), or a lazy week on the porch. The street is very quiet and you would never know you are so close to all the action which made our young adult children very happy. There was so much to do. We ran or biked every morning on the many trails. Henlopen State Park is very close and has great trails if you want to get away from the busy Boardwalk. Debra is absolutely gracious and wonderful. She was very attentive and responded to our questions before arrival. I recommend renting sheets and towels as part of the rental package. They were very high quality and made the packing so much easier. We definitely plan to return.....if Debra will have us back. We had a wonderful week.

Owner's Response: Of course, I will have you back! It was really fun meeting you all and I invite you to come back soon. Thank you for writing this wonderful review. You have described the porch, beach, and neighborhood beautifully. You can't ask for a better location in Rehoboth Beach. Like you, many of my guests have enjoyed the Cape Henlopen Trails for running, biking, walking and bird watching. Here's a link - http://www.destateparks.com/activities/Trails/maps.asp - that gives information about all the trails and provides maps as well. I'm glad you enjoyed the linens and you are right about saving on the packing. By the time you get all the sheets and towels in the car, there might not be room for you:) Thanks again for choosing the Oak Cottage and please come back soon!

Wonderful Family Getaway with Older Children!

  • 5 of 5
As kids get older, it's more difficult to agree on a location that will suit all. This home is only six houses or so from the beach, making it perfect for not only easily hauling chairs, coolers, footballs, volleyballs, towels, etc. but very close to the Boardwalk. We hardly had to use our car, which was a plus!

Our oldest daughter, who is a young adult, stayed in the separate little cottage with her friend. They had the best time and enjoyed their independence in this spacious addition. The screened in porch on the main cottage is very large and where we ate all of our meals when not going out. I didn't find any other homes in this price range that offered a screened in porch this large with the combination of being so close to the beach on the North end.

The interior of the home is tastefully decorated and furnished. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed and then some. The beds were very comfortable! The only thing I would change is the size of the Master Bath, which is small. This is expected with a home built in the 1920's. In the big picture, very little time was spent in the Master Bath, so we easily adjusted.

Finally, the owner of this home was very gracious and only a phone call away if we ever needed anything. We didn't; however, it was nice to know that she was so attentive.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the wonderful review. It was a pleasure meeting you and all your family. I know how difficult it can be to find the "perfect" vacation spot for all ages. I'm so happy to hear that the Oak Cottage was that place. It always interests me to hear how different families use the Little Cottage. Some have grandparents who like their peace and quiet to escape the early morning chatter of little ones but still enjoy going up to the Oak Cottage for all the family activities. Others have the teens or college aged adults stay in the Little Cottage as a place of independence and a bit of freedom. Some guests have multiple siblings with their own children and let the couple with a baby stay so as not to disturb the others with middle of the night feedings or early morning rise of the little one. It seems to work well in so many ways. I agree the location is unbeatable. It's close to the boardwalk, downtown and only takes a couple minutes to be on the sand watching the waves. You really don't need a car unless you want a trip to the outlets or a big grocery store. The master bath is definitely on the small side but it is cute and functional. It has a nice new shower and tile floor and, as you say, very little time is spent there. With the very large, 2 person sized outdoor shower with 2 shower heads, it's hard to imagine not loving a bath outside in the shade of the trees everyday. Thanks so much for the great description of the kitchen and decor. Come back soon!

Best of the Best

  • 5 of 5
Oak Cottage and guest house is the perfect location and setting for a trip to the beach. The cottage is absolutely charming and we loved the linen service option. Seven of us were there for a girls weekend and loved it so much that we booked for the next year as soon as we returned home. Although we were there for a girls weekend, I plan to return with my family.
Debra is incredibly helpful. She not only made the rental process easy, but told us about activities that were going on during our visit and even returned items we left after our visit!
When we were at the cottage we spent most of our time on the fantastic porch. The house and guest house feel very secluded and quiet and yet you are within walking distance of all Rehoboth has to offer. When we arrived, we parked the cars and did not use them again until we left.
Over the years we have stayed at several places in the Rehoboth and Bethany area and this is truly the best.

Owner's Response: I believe you are so right. The Oak Cottage and the Little Cottage are in the perfect location! I book many, many girls' vacations in the spring and fall and I loved meeting you and your friends. Lots of homeowners tell me they use a lock box system so guests can let themselves in and so the homeowner doesn't have to be bothered. I think that is wrong. I want to meet my guests. We have so many email and phone conversations before check in and I love to meet everyone. I think the personal attention is expected and I enjoy making everyone feel welcome. I appreciate that my cottage was chosen and do my best to be helpful but not bothersome. I'm glad you liked the linen service. I think it adds an extra special touch to the cottage and you don't have to pack and carry all those sheets and towels. Best of all - no dirty laundry to carry home. Personally, I love sliding into cool crisp sheets especially after a long travel day. I am delighted you are returning with your family next year. Thank you so much and thanks for the nice review!

Perfect for Everyone

  • 5 of 5
This is my second year here and it had to be fantastic for me to come back a second time, with all the other places to rent in Rehoboth. Last year it was just a girls get-together after 40 years of being apart and raising families. This year we planned to stay 3 nights in stead of the two we did last year. Then I thought - wouldn't it be a nice place for a weekend with my husband before the girls got here? So, I rented it for a week. Then, I thought my mother (who loves the beach and just lost her husband last month, my father, after 62 years of marriage) would like to come, too. So, I rented it for one more night, my daughter brought her grandmother to the beach for 3 nights, and we all had a wonderful time. It was great to see my mother so happy after all she's been through. I even got her to the beach. This year Debra offered linen service, and that was a time saver for all of us. We did do some cooking this year, after all the kitchen is fully equipped. Also, there is a new deck and set of stairs out back. We again were wowed by the wrap-around deck, had coffee out there in the mornings, and were able to sit out back in front of the cottage. I can't say enough good about this place or the owner. She is very particular about every aspect and wants her guests to feel comfortable and at home while on vacation. If you are in doubt, stay here, you won't be disappointed.

Owner's Response: Thanks for so many nice comments and compliments! It was great to see you back again this year and I love that you brought your husband, mother, daughter and then all the girlfriends were able to come for a special reunion time too. What a fun time and good planning on your part to organize the trip for everyone. I am so pleased with the new deck. I think it adds a little something-something! You know me - always trying to make it more comfy and fun. Lots of folks have asked for the linens and I'm happy to make up the beds and put nice towels in the bathrooms. Much less to pack, haul and unload when you are all ready to start the vacation. Just climb in those smooth, cool sheets and off to dreamland. Thanks again and come again soon!

Absolutely lovely cottage and perfect location!!

  • 5 of 5
We rented the cottage for an off-season weekend in April and just loved it. The cottage is absolutely charming, beautifully decorated, very clean, well-maintained, with lovely amenities. There's a fabulous screened in wrap around porch, and lovely back yard. We had two couples renting the property, but could have easily fit two more couples or children if you have a larger group. The smaller cottage on the property is just precious and would be great for one couple to rent on it's own. The beach is just 5 houses away from the cottage, and walking into town or the boardwalk is just a stones throw away. We enjoyed being a few blocks away from the mainstream of Rehoboth and being in this charming neighborhood. Debra was absolutely fantastic to work with! The cottage is a gem! We can't wait to come back!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the wonderful review and all your nice comments! We loved meeting you and having you as a guest at the Oak Cottage. Looking forward to your return in the near future. I know you really enjoyed the Little Cottage so come stay for a gorgeous autumn vacation. Happy Easter!

Location

From the Owner

You will love this cottage because it is not the Four Seasons Hotel. It is an old style, comfy, charming, classic beach cottage. You will live on the porch. Everyone does. It's addictive. The yard is large and private. You are not jammed up against the neighbor's house. Plenty of room to play. I always wanted my children to get away from the TV, video games and 'go be kids.' Yours will be free from the entertainment world and go explore. You will unwind and relax. All that said, there is central air so no noisy window units humming all night. There are TVs in Little Cottage, Master Bedroom, Living Room and one Guest Bedroom for times you feel like watching a movie or checking out the news - try not to do it. You have a nice partly sunny, partly shaded yard and a cool, screened porch on which to enjoy your coffee, cocktail and dinner. BBQ some Delmarvalous chicken or steam up those Blue Crabs. We have such delicious local produce and seafood. Or, take yourself out to one of the many local restaurants - Seafood, Sushi, Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Pizza, and even British cuisine. This is the most idyllic beach town ever, with all the memories of your childhood and everything you want within your reach.
