About the Owner

My wife and I lived in this property for 24 years and loved being there. We would still be living there if not for the fact that our only child, a daughter, settled in western MA and started producing grandchildren. I worked in media and owned a small publishing business with visitor magazines on multiple islands for almost 20 years. Before that I was the Sales Manager of KMVI radio station, now part of the Pacific Radio Group. Currently I am an underwriting salesperson for New England Public Radio broadcasting out of the 5 Colleges at UMass in Amherst.

Tanya was a planned unit development and association manager, highly qualified to manage condominium associations as VP and General Manager of the Maui branch of the largest property managment company in Hawaii. At the end of her career, she left property management, went back to college and worked as a teacher with Hawaii Job Corps. Now she's retired and takes care of our grandson every Thursday, an activity she thoroughly loves.

We will never stay in downtown Kihei again!

  • 4 of 5
We loved this condo - homey accomodation, friendly full-time residents, well maintained gardens and pool. We enjoyed walking over to Buzz's Wharf in the mornings, walking over to Sugar Beach and spending time at Haycraft Beach - just a quick walk away. It was central to Kihei, Lahaina and Kahului. We spent the last week in Kihei and really missed Maalea and it's quiet evenings. We will be back as soon as we can. Thank you David!

A fantastic vacation at the Island Sands!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed in unit 203 at the Island Sands for three weeks in March, 2013 and thoroughly enjoyed our vacation. The condo was exactly as described and pictured. It was clean and very well-maintained. The remodelled kitchen and bathroom along with the washer and dryer in the unit made for a comfortable stay.

The flatware and dishes had a tropical pattern to them and along with the comforter in the bedroom and some artwork throughout the unit provided a subtle (without being too over-the-top), lovely reminder of the tropical destination that is Maui. The view from the lanai was very relaxing and private; we were able to watch whales from the lanai every day.

We took pleasure in meeting other vacationers/condo owners at the Aloha Friday morning get-togethers by the pool as well as the Saturday evening appetizer socials. The community at the Island Sands is a friendly bunch and we felt welcome there. The location is very central to many other parts of the island and that was a definite plus. A 15 or 20 minute drive would get you to Kahului (the airport, Costco and other shopping), Kihei, Wailea or Lahaina.

Ma'alaea is a quiet area and that is exactly how we like our vacation time. It doesn’t have the hustle and bustle and traffic of Kihei, yet it’s close enough that you can easily get there when you want to. We liked the condo so much that we have already booked our time in unit 203 for February 2014!

Beautiful condo, great location

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at Island Sands #203 from 5/20-6/1 and found the condo to be comfortable, cozy and extremely well equipped. We really enjoyed watching the sunrise from the lanai overlooking Ma'alaea Bay! The location was excellent, close to everything and very quiet. Never used the air conditioner, we let the trade winds cool us! The grounds were fantastic, colorful flowers everywhere you looked, and well maintained. It was so great to be gone having fun in Lahaina, at Makena State Park or driving the Hana Highway and know we had a comfy place to come 'home' to. Thanks for sharing your piece of paradise with us!

Central Maui Condo Maalea

  • 5 of 5
This is a lovely condo. Beautiful views, very nice condo. Fully equipped, and very clean. We were very happy here. The photos and description fully matched the accomodation. The owner was very helpful in our email exchange. I would recommend this accomodation, but I will caution with my recommendation that this is a very windy spot on the island. Where this matters is that the condo has a louvered window in the bedroom, and both nights of our stay were very noisy due to the wind literally whistling through the small gaps of the window. It doesn't seem like a big deal, but the noise kept us awake off and on. I see that some of the neighbours have changed out the louvers for other options, likely to reduce the noise. I noticed in the guest book in the condo, that this was an issue for other guests. If this was changed, the condo would definitely be without any issues. There is a beautiful beach nearby within walking distance, and some great restaurants at the wharf. We stayed in Kihei and Lahaina during this vacation as well, and this condo was in a good location to connect with some of the island activities (we did the drive up the Haleakala mountain for sunrise, and also did the Hana highway from here). This is a pretty central location for many activities. Thanks to the owner for sharing this space. Mahalo.

Owner's Response: Mahalo for your lovely and thoughtful review. I know sometimes Maalaea is a bit windy! We had a glass block wall installed inside that window about 15 years into living there. When it was no longer our permanent residence, the association required that we return it to the original confiuration! That was several hundred dollars to put it in and more to take it out and make it look like new. We'll see if we can find some way of baffling the louvers. Come again soon!

A great choice for an affordable ocean view in Maui

  • 4 of 5
My wife and I stayed here for a week and we loved it. The view from the lanai is great. The condo is not large, but works fine for two people. The grounds surrounding the resort are immaculate. The beach gear stored in the closet was a nice extra (chairs, boogie board, snorkel equipment). We weren't sure at first about staying in Maalaea, but it actually turned out to be very well located - just a short drive to Kihei and not very far from Kaanapali / Kapalua area. The wind was a bit of an issue, especially at night, but the lanai is well buffered from the wind and it died down quite a bit about halfway through our stay. The resort is whisper quiet and very relaxing. Don't miss free coffee and donuts by the pool on Friday morning. Also, there is a very nice beach just five minutes down the road. All in all, this was a very nice place to stay. Wish the bed was larger and a bit more comfortable, but overall we had no complaints. You will enjoy your stay here and the great view from the lanai.

Nice condo, quiet location and a lovely view....looks exactly like the photo. Need a car if you want to get around as the immediate area has limited activities. However, Kihea is very close by and Lahina is approx. 15-20 miles away. Complex kept clean and grounds well manicured. Perfect for 2 adults, or 2 adults with small children but could see it getting a bit crowded with 4 adults. Otherwise would recommend this property.

From the Owner

We were renting 506 in Island Sands, a 2 bedroom, prior to 1986. When 203 came on the market, we decided we loved the complex and we really liked the view from that side and height of the building better so we put in an offer that was accepted and lived there from then on. Maalaea is just a wonderful place to live. It is close to everything yet fairly private. The building is concrete so you don't hear the neighbors like you might in a wooden building though sometimes it's challenging to hang a picture on the wall! The beach is an easy walk down the street and so is Maalaea Harbor and the Ocean Center.
