Herb's Home was perfect for our NOLA vacation. The house is located in a picturesque New Orleans neighborhood walking distance to most places, including restaurants, grocery stores, coffee shops AND just a 5 min. walk to Jazz Fest which was amazing to be so close to all of the action. We took short taxi's rides to all of our favorite Music Halls, hung out in the back yard and really enjoyed the place!!! Getting to know Herb was awesome too, he knows everything about the city and it was really helpful to have some local advice.

exploring the big easy

the location of the place is excellent. not far from city park and close to the french quarters. the place itself was very comfortable, and spacious. Herb is an excellent host who is very informative about the city and will go out of his way to help you out. the only thing i don't recommend, is using the stove. i found it rather dangerous.

Owner's Response: Wow! After forty-two 5/5 rated reviews, we finally got a 4/5 review! Granted, 4/5 is still "very good"; but we must take exception to the 4-burner gas stove and oven being "rather dangerous". I got the feeling our guest was used to electric, but we all cook with gas in New Orleans. While the stove is probably older than was our valued guest, it was thoroughly checked out by a licensed plumber just five months ago, and it is not dangerous. Besides, seldom do folks visit New Orleans to cook, with all our world-class restaurants and cuisine. We did, however, have a set of parents as guests a few years back, visiting their children and grandchildren here, who cooked Thanksgiving dinner for six on this same stove! All I had to loan the Mom/Grandma/Chef was an extra round glass oven-proof pie dish, a few larger serving dishes and a larger 4-cup measuring cup! Everything else was there - down to Saran Wrap, aluminum foil, Zip-Locs, tea kettle, you-name-it. Same with the bathroom.
Anyway, all comments have some meaning; and, as a result, we are lining the wall/backsplash around the stove with stainless steel, which will aid in cleaning and perhaps give the added feeling of "safe". And cooking and stoves aside, our young guest truly impressed me with such eagerness to explore The Big Easy.
We welcome all feedback, both positive and negative; this allows us to improve. And we appreciate being told if something is not right; and even better yet, if a guest has any thoughts, suggestions or recommendations as to how we may improve. We just added all new beautiful sturdy cast aluminum patio furniture throughout the tropical yard because a plus-sized guest had a "dance" with a "Home-Depot" patio chair earlier this summer. The furniture cost was almost half our annual profit! But the yard looks awesome! Which reminds me, I must upload current photos. So many guests comment that the photos don't begin to do justice to The Lagniappe Suite, the garden room and the large lush tropical garden with a fish pond. Speaking of the lush gardens/patios: many years ago, after checking in and seeing the yard, two guests decided to have their wedding here instead of in a park.It was spectacular! And we have honeymoon, anniversary and birthdayer guests all the time. And now today, more and more parents who come to visit their youngsters who have settled here. If it's not a special event or holiday, we generally extend a discount to repeat guests visiting family here in New Orleans.

NOLA Sweet Spot!

  • 5 of 5
Wonderful location, wonderful host, quaint sweet spot in New Orleans. Near the park or a quick cab ride to the French quarter you just cannot beat this apartment. Take a bath in the clawfoot tub after a day of sight seeing or relax in the garden in back. Herb is terrific, he tells you the best ideas and where to go for anything and everything. For the price and location you just cannot beat this place. We love it there and would gladly stay again!!!

Perfection in NOLA!

This place is a true gem! Herb greeted us warmly, showing us around our "home away from home", letting us know we could use the darling backyard and the bikes and recommending places to eat and things to do during our stay. He had coffee and cream and a nice selection of beer in the fridge, wine bottles to purchase and a beautiful basket of fruit on the table. The studio was completely equipped to meet our every need and the location is peaceful and tranquil but within walking, biking or short driving distance of everything. City Park is just a breath down the street, and while you can no longer "take a streetcar named Desire and then transfer to one called Cemeteries and ride six blocks and get off at - Elysian Fields”, you can take the Canal line and transfer to St. Charles! A small market around the corner from Herb's house and fabulous restaurants within a few minutes' stroll make it easy to stay put and explore the beautiful neighborhood. The studio was clean and spacious, and Herb was an unobtrusive but most generous host. Begin your day at Morning Call in City Park for coffee and beignets. Ride the bikes on the beautiful path to Lake Pontchartrain (the city is amazingly bike-friendly). Stop along the way at the Grow Dad Youth Farm to see the amazing things young people are doing in the city. Walk around the Bestoff Sculpture Garden and then come back to this cozy studio for a glass of wine in the back yard before heading out for a marvelous meal at Lola's or Drago's. Finish your evening by hitting some of the jazz clubs on Frenchman Street. We completely enjoyed our stay and were totally charmed by our accommodations. We cannot wait to return to a city that you cannot help but fall in love with.

If you haven't been to New Orleans, you may not be familiar with the term “lagniappe.” It basically means, “an unexpected and special little something.” In his 1883 memoir, "Life on the Mississippi," Mark Twain called lagniappe “a word worth traveling to New Orleans to get; a nice limber, expressive, handy word....” When you stay at Herb's “Lagniappe Suite,” what you experience will let you know exactly what the word means.

My husband and I were impressed by the layout of the suite, the comfortable bed, the enormous closet, the spacious bureau, the make-up lights, the claw-foot bathtub, the generous number of towels, and the well-appointed, well-stocked galley kitchen. Everything was clean, neat and tidy. Because Herb greeted us so warmly, we felt right at home from the minute we walked in. If there's anything you want to know about New Orleans, ask Herb. As a lifelong resident, he is both knowledgeable and passionate about his city, and truly wants you to have the time of your life during your visit.

Grocery stores, coffee shops and restaurants are an easy five-to-ten minute walk from the suite, and City Park and the New Orleans Museum of Art are just a twenty-minute walk away. The suite is in a lovely neighborhood and is conveniently located for exploring various parts of the city. If you arrive with a car, there is easy on-street parking out front. There's also a lovely little park not far away. Not surprisingly, Herb is the caretaker for that park.

One unexpected and delightful perk—a lagniappe for sure—was having access to a seating area in the beautiful and lush garden out back. Another was finding a number of books on New Orleans culture and history right on the bookshelves in the suite. Still another was discovering a bowl of fresh fruit on the dining table. These are the little things that make a stay memorable and special, and for my husband and me, they defined “lagniappe.”

Absolutely no complaints!!

We visited during Jazz Fest and had the most amazing time. Herb was one of the most gracious hosts and went above and beyond to make sure our stay was a good one. NOLA has many wonderful friendly people but Herb is the best. He provided us with everything we needed for a fun weekend, even rides to the French Quarter when cabs weren’t available after the Fest. He was available when you needed him, but stayed out of your way to let you have your own fun. The apt was so homey with tons of character, very clean and stocked with plenty snacks and drinks. The location also can’t be beat - convenient walk to the festival or quick drive or bike ride to the French Quarter. The backyard was a lovely surprise. On a side note Herb is very green friendly which made the backyard an even more amazing place to hang out. We’ll be back next year!
