Nice place, could be much better
The renter has to pick up the keys at a gas station/market a ways away from the place, which isn't that big of a problem except that the attendants at the gas station knew nothing about the place. Plus, I had to call the owner to learn the process. I would think that the owner would tell us that in an email or a call, but I had to call her to get the check-in information. Once we figured out how to get into the place (not as easy as you might think), it was very nice. But, as an owner of some vacation rental properties myself, a few tips (hopefully taken as constructive criticism):
--Make the check-in process as clear and simple as possible and get the information to the renter as quickly as possible.
--Have a book or folder in the place listing things to do and places to go
--Get better wireless coverage. It was terrible. One access point for 4 units...?
--It's a beachfront property, so have some beach things available. Chairs, an umbrella, snorkels and masks, bikes, fishing poles, anything. People aren't going to take those things on a plane with them. The great thing about VRBO properties, typically, is that it is from a renter who knows the area and has those kind of things available. Give us newcomers some tips and spare us from $25+ rentals for beach gear.
--No plastic cups or plates. We appreciated the plates and glasses there, but we didn't have little children with us. Provide some non-breakable tableware that children or clumsy adults can use. It wouldn't cost much and you have plenty of room in the cabinets for them.
--If you are going to have makeup removal kits to keep women from using washcloths, great. Good idea, actually. But a total of two for a four-day rental? With two women there for four days, they were used up the first night.
--Let guests leave some certain food items there. Sauces, bottled water, spices, coffee, things like that don't go bad soon. VRBO places are great for the 'pass-along' elements like that. Embrace it. To say that all food items must be thrown out upon departure is over-the-top to me. If you don't want to keep them in the pantry or refrigerator, throw them out.
Small things, but they make a difference.
