Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Kokomo is your state of mind in this secluded, peaceful, comfortable 1952 Tybee cottage located on Horsepen Creek. Enjoy your vacation while playing in the creek, fishing, crabbing, swimming or floating around. Add to your bird list while watching the entertaining varieties from the large screened porch or marvel at the dolphin and wildlife activity on the dock. Kokomo's large family friendly yard offers many opportunities for quiet contemplation, birding, fishing, swimming and water oriented activities.

This half acre property is hidden away on the backside of Tybee at the end of 10th Street. Kokomo takes advantage of cool ocean breezes and relaxing secluded tree covered hideaways. Your first sight of Kokomo begins to peel away the layers as you drive past the trickling fountain garden. Once you relax in the hot tub and garden after quiet meditation in the private labyrinth the vacation has truly begun. The large fire pit is especially designed for traditional oyster roasts and family get-togethers. The Tybee 'Redneck' Gazebo is a quiet place to watch all the activities or just another space for contemplation while you swing your cares away.

The cottage is easily accessible to all ages with ground floor entrances. All rooms have ceiling fans and cool tile floors. The newly added screened porch offers unbelievable sunsets, wildlife and bird viewing while watching the tide flow in and out. You will enjoy sitting in the gossip chair reading and watching the show or enjoying tea and conversations. The dining area offers a beautiful glass topped dining table that easily seats eight. The fully equipped kitchen features granite top counters, plenty of cabinet space, quirky tropical colors and inspiring views.

The living space is comfortably furnished with woven furniture from Indonesia, a 46' TV/HD/DVD player for watching movies or sport games. The 'Captain's Quarters' features a king bed with a private full bath, writing desk, reading chair, a view of the garden and sounds of the Atlantic Ocean. The 'Creekside Room' is furnished with a queen bed, reading chair and has a magnificent view of the marsh and creek, but you still hear the ocean. Our 'Ocean Room' brings the sound of the ocean in and has a set of bunk beds, a futon and 30' TV with a view of the garden and labyrinth.

Should you become ready for a change of pace, Kokomo is located just five quick blocks to the main public beach and within biking distance to anywhere on Tybee. We have many fabulous restaurants within walking or biking distance and we're located in the middle of the island. Just six blocks south to the strand, pier, and local shopping; four blocks north to the library, YMCA, Memorial Park/tennis & volleyball courts, and two blocks to the islands IGA grocery store. All the island churches are just in between. Savannah lies over the Lazaretto Creek Bridge just 20 minutes to the west and Hilton Head is beyond the next bridge to the north.

disgusted guest

  • 1 of 5
We r disgusted with thus house and the owners. We have just met with them after discovering mouse poop in our beds. Upon arrival in the house we discovered some poop by the garbage can, but wwanted to make the best off our vacation we tried to deal with it. It wasn't until the third night when I woke with mouse poop in my bed that I couldn't take it any more!!!! I took it in tissue down to Cecil and he said before we got there he had noticed evidence of mice in the pantry and he put all their food in plastic bags. There solution was to wash the sheets and call an exterminator. I did not want to spend the day with my family and the exterminator so we packed all of our stuff and notified them we were leaving. We spent an entire day out if our vacation finding a new house. All that was available was an apartment. We met with Elizabeth and she refused to refund us the days we had been there. Her response was if we would had come to her the first night they would have taken care of the mice then! But at the same she continued to say she cleaned before we arrived, not what Cecil said. He clearly stated he had seen evidence before we arrived. As we were finishing packing up and cleaning the cottage, I went to grab a dish washer pack and came face to face with the mouse in the sticky trap. They were co via ed that was the only one. Judging by the amount of poop we found upon packing up, it was impossible there was only one. Not to mention as we were pull in the sheets there was mouse poop between the sheets and mattress pad!! As we trying to receive our refund Elizabeth said she found that hard to believe. After a day of being g gone I walked Ber back to the room lifted the sheets ( which she had just washed while we were gone) and the poop Was still there! Not to mentioned. The mildew that I discovered on the pillow and blanket I had used on my son! Elizabeth's response ce was that that had been in the closet and there were more blankets in the house we cod have used!!!!!! This place was disgusting
I'm guessing all the positive reviews are from friends and family. I also wish I had read the review they are there the entire time!! No privacy at all!!! You are cometely babyset!!!!!!? DO NOT STAY HERE!! The owners appear sweat and kind but when something goes wrong they are not reasonable. They insist that the amount they gave us back was fair. I didn't plan on paying for nights I slept with rodents!!!

Owner's Response: KoKoMo does not allow uninvited guest, such as mice or pest. We use a professional service to ensure this. Ideal Pest Control does an excellent job, not only do they provide regular service, they will come immediately if a bug or critter is seen. Upon notification, the mouse was caught within hours. No evidence of others has been seen since.
KoKoMo is kept meticulously clean.
The owners live on the property. We reside on a 50' yatch at the dock about 200' from the house. We are available 24/7 in person or by phone.
KoKoMo is located on the backside of Tybee. It's a 3/4 acre private "nature preserve" covered with live oaks and cedar trees, Its being on the water and marsh adds to the natural appeal with many birds and much marine activity.
Peace and calm can be found at KoKoMo.

Just What the Dr Ordered

We sadly just returned from our 2 week stay at Kokomo. It was great. Elizabeth and Cecil could not have been more perfect hostess and host. The cottage was adorable and really clean. We would stay here again.

Thanks for a great vacation.

Best family trip

  • 5 of 5
Absolutely loved Kokomo cottage. Cecil and Elizabeth made me and my family feel so comfortable and welcome. The cottage is very comfortable with so many private spaces to relax and read. The creek is so much fun. We rented bikes and enjoyed exploring the Island and beach. Loved the personnel dolphin trip with Elizabeth and Zen. Looking foreward to visiting again hopefully in a month ending in R for the oysters.

Fun house, great owners.

  • 4 of 5
We enjoyed our time here. We had 4 adults, 2- 5year olds, 10yr old, and 1.5yr old for a 4 night stay here. We had a few minor bumps, but nothing major. The house has such a great yard and lay out for kids & older guests. The house is colorful & fun, with cute little trinkets all around. We did have to go through and "baby proof" things to ensure our lil one didn't break anything. The screened in porch & large yard was a life saver with kids. They created great play areas when not at beach. The yard is big enough that 1.5yr old can run around without getting close to dock or water. The inlet is a great swimming area for the kids. During low tide the sand bar makes for a perfect private "beach".
The house is only few blocks from the beach, which is totally walking distance. However if you have smaller ones this can be a bit difficult, trying to cross the roads, keep them safe, all while carrying your beach items. I recommend buying a beach cart. If you have a golf cart, bring it. Bikes were not practical for our family, with younger kids, and 2 elderly adults.
Our biggest problem was using the showers. The water pressure in the showers is not ideal. You cannot use both showers at one time, actually you cannot use any two water sources in the house at same time. If you try, the water only drips out of shower head, & the temperature is not consistent. One moment cold, the next very hot! Trying to wash off 4 kids after a beach trip was very stressful. During first use of shower, a giant wood roach crawled out of pipe. However, my husband has assured me this can happen with any older house, and does not reflect on the cleanliness of house.
The owners do live on a boat at the dock, but we never felt intruded on, and it never caused a problem for us. They are super nice & helpful. They do have a very large dog, Zen, a Great Dane, but he was EXTREMELY well behaved! Our family loves dogs, so he was a special treat for the kids. He didn't jump, lick, bark and was gentle with the kids. We even let him come into house with us so kids could enjoy him. The owners insisted it was not necessary, but Zen just laid around, & we enjoyed him.
Thank you for a great time at Tybee Island! This house is what you make it. You can sit back, relax, be out of crowds, and enjoy the privacy or you can be adventurous. It will work for most anybody.

Owner's Response: Jennifer, we enjoyed having your family stay at Kokomo Cottage. Thanks for taking such good care of the cottage. Also thanks for the information on the water. The city had a broken pipe and the pressure wasn't fixed correctly hence the poor pressure. We're addressing that problem. Look forward to your family staying with us again. Elizabeth

wonderful relaxation

  • 5 of 5
Just back from a week at Kokomo. It is a shame it took five previous stays at Tybee to find this place. All of the amenities, privacy, dock on the creek, fire pit, "redneck" gazebo, huge screened in porch and very comfortable. The owners were very gracious and shared their home with our extended family and we are very thankful. Location is perfect as you are close to everything but have so much space and privacy.

Kids fished and swam in the creek during downtime, and had plenty of space to play. Owners run a charter business and took us to "Little Tybee" which is absolutely pristine, saw dolphins, collected shells and had a blast!

Look forward to seeing Cecil and Elizabeth every summer for years to come! Thank you soo Much!!!

Location

From the Owner

Tybee offers one of the truly wild places left on the East Coast. We have an abundance of birds and wildlife living in our front yard. This quirky, friendly island welcomes all visitors alike and draws each into the web of island life. Just one visit instills the need to return. Cecil and I love to educate our guest about this fabulous eco-system that surrounds us. We have the ocean to explore and a very diverse estuary to experience the natural world's abundance. Kokomo is located on Tybee's main creek and the wildlife out your front door is astonishing. We see Dolphin, Otters and Osprey in the creek as well as many shore and migratory birds.

Tybee Island Charters offers guided offshore and inshore fishing trips, as well as, nature adventures from dolphin watching to fossil hunts. Ask about our special charter/lodging packages. We're out your front door!
