About this property

Quaint Fishing Cottage

Secluded from other vacationers the cottage is located on a 1/3 acre peninsula immediately off Route 15. Conveniently eight miles south of Smiths Falls and 45 minutes from 1000 island bridge. The cottage has a private dock and a gated lockable entry. There is a second dock and parking space used by patrons of the island cottage.
Currently priced in American Currency. Please add 20% to listed price to estimate actual cost in Canadian currency. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Gorgeous Canadian sunsets, and lots of room for the kids to play!

This cottage is a very good value. Its a nice property and quaint cottage located on the west side of highway 15 there is a nature trail on the opposite side of the highway. You can kayak under the highway on Otter Creek to take an adventure into an everglade like winding waterway that goes on for about 1 kilometer with birds, beavers, turtles, large frogs, and many other creatures to observe.
Being next to highway 15 can cause road noise which many people get used to but some may find it undesirable. Since there is not a beach and the water depth does not get past 3 meters deep for about 100 meters from shore better swimming locations may be found using the kayaks or by renting a boat at lens cove in Portland.
This is primarily a fishing cottage with no neighbors where you can be as loud as you wish.

Good stay, room for improvement
Check in seems a little glitchy as you have to get the keys at a nearby campsite. Even though we advised what time we’d be there, no one was around and no one picked up the phone when we called upon arrival. It all worked out, but a few “now what?!” moments. This is definitely a cute little cottage. They’ve done a good job with a small building. Space wise, two couples on vacation would be pushing it. Air conditioning was awesome. Bell Internet was great. New appliances (stove & fridge) - also great. The bathroom seemed newly done and the shower stall was spacious and gets two thumbs up. Just FYI, there is no room to put groceries. Every cupboard and drawer is packed. So many pots and pans that they even filled the oven. Huge aluminum foil roasters, an old George Foreman grill, on and on. So that’s great, if you need to pour 20 cups of coffee (I counted the mugs) or if you need 7 mostly melted spatulas all at once. ;o) One wine glass, but lots of plastic cups from the 70s. We had to leave all of our dry goods (snacks, crackers, potatoes, onions, sugar, peanut butter, breads, etc. in Rubbermaid bins in the second bedroom). One good go through by someone with some common sense would eliminate the unnecessary kitchen stuff and create some storage space for renters! The bedrooms are far too narrow for night tables but a corner shelf on each side of the bed would help with somewhere to put eyeglasses or a water glass, or a book when nodding off. Be aware that although not stated in the VRBO listing, you have to bring drinking water (which, once we saw the hose out in the shallow, murky, weed filled pond, we also used for coffee, washing vegetables and brushing our teeth) It’s mentioned in the info sheet you get once you book. But once you get there, there’s no water cooler to dispense the water if you buy a 5 gallon jug. So buy a pump, too. The BBQ worked, but was a shambles. Hopefully that’s next on the list for replacement. No swimming here. Although shallow (~2’ at the end of the dock), there’s a good foot of mud in the lakebed and the water is completely weedy. Weeds growing and weeds floating. Messy for the boat motor. The dock is narrow (not suitable for sitting) and FYI has no cleats for your boat ropes. The public boat launch is just up the shoreline, so it’s quite convenient. Otter Lake is great, we enjoyed our days out on the water. We enjoyed our stay & had a good week overall. Thanks Brett!

Nice cottage and location
The cottage was in a good location and very private. The cottage and property were very nice and the road noise was not an issue. The beds were comfortable but the bedrooms themselves were narrow making it tricky if you had to get up during the night and try not to wake up the person beside you. Fishing from the dock would be great for little kids as the were lots of sunfish. You pretty much catch one with each cast. Apparently the bass fishing this summer was excellent but only if you had a boat. Overall, I would have given it a 5 star rating except for two things. The fishing kayaks and lifejackets were nowhere to be found. It is possible they were in the shed but none of the keys we were given would open the lock. One key fit the lock but would not turn the lock cylinder. The other issue was the wifi would not work. Our computers and phones said connected but no wifi. Tried turning the modem off and leaving it for 5 minutes and putting it back on every day but never were able to connect. Had to use our cell phones as hotspots to connect laptops. Luckily we only went on the internet while having breakfast in the morning to catch up on the news and again for a while in the evening.

Paradise for our dogs
We chose this cottage because of the fence and water around the perimeter to keep our dogs contained and safe from the highway. The cottage itself was clean, tidy and well appointed but quite small and suited 4, comfortably, 6 would be a squeeze. The air conditioning and appliances were new and worked very well. The view of the lake superb and the kayaks made it all accessible. The loons, heron, mergansers and other wildlife were intriguing. However, we really found the constant noise from the highway, because it is so close and so busy, very distracting. Our home is in a quieter neighbourhood than this cottage. We were also disappointed that we couldn’t swim from the dock because of the weeds, although this didn’t bother our lab. We met the owners and found them to be considerate and conscientious.

A little piece of paradise!
On arrival, I was dismayed to discover the proximity to Hwy 15. Within a short time, the cozy cottage, proximity to the lake in a secluded private bay won me over! What traffic? Goose families parading by the shore! Otters cavorting next to the dock...truly idyllic! The sunsets were worth the price of admission. The cottage is beautifully renovated (the workmanship is superb)! Enjoy your stay!

About the host

Hosted by Bret Hartman

Host profile image
My name is Bret Hartman and I'm the trustee for the property. This cottage is a fantastic place to have a great time with friends and family.

Why they chose this property

There are no neighbors to disrupt your privacy or good times. There are many places to visit for example historical Perth is a 15 minute drive. Portland and the Big Rideau is a 5 minute drive. Ottawa is about a 45 minute drive north. Driving to Ottawa is a great day trip where you can find anything your heart desires.

What makes this property unique

This Bay is a wildlife mecca. It's the best fishing on the lake hands down. The most experienced fisherman on the lake travel to this bay to do their fishing and you can cast a line right off the dock and kick back. The cottage is situated right off of highway 15 making traveling easy. Across the street is a hiking trail where you can observe the everglade-like nature preserve that is visible from our google map of the cottage.
