Beautiful Resort!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I visited Hopkins and stayed at Sarkiki Reef with 3 other couples. The eaccommodations are well designed, spacious, comfortable, clean and have amazing views from the decks. We loved the pool which is salt based and a lovely beach with a safe, shallow shore line. The people of Belize and Hopkins in particular are friendly and unlike larger resorts where you are closed off from the local community we felt like part of the community. Linda & Mike (and Cam) offer invaluable advice as to where to eat and who to connect with for various excursions. Manuel who works at Sarkiki is happy to be a guide on his days off and his brother Epi and the rest of the staff are friendly and helpful. If you are needing to watch a sporting event then Sittee River Marina which is near by is a great place to go with good food and cheep beer. It's also where we left from to go snorkelling with Patrick. I'm glad we spent 2 weeks because it always takes a few days to get the lay of the land when it's a first visit to a foreign place. We would recommend renting a car (we used Crystal Car Rentals) and though the highways are pretty good be prepared for rough roads (and mud if it rains) around the smaller towns. We would highly recommend the tubing in the caves (at Blue Hole) with the group that Cameron at Sarkiki set us up with - I was a little concerned with the idea of being in a cave, but I didn't have a problem at all :) We also loved Chef Rob's and Love on the Rocks restaurants (same owners for both) and when our Dutch cousins discovered they served dutch croquets (limited clientele) well we had to go and we devoured them :) All in all we would highly recommend Sarkiki - Mike and Linday and staff went out of their way to make sure our stay was comfortable and worry free. Thanks to everyone there!

Fantastic Vacation!

  • 5 of 5
This was absolutely one of the most amazing vacations we have ever taken...mainly due to the staff of Epi and Manuel, who are of Mayan heritage and very proud of it! Epi arranged a snorkeling trip with Patrick at the Sittee River Marina (1/2 mile away with a very nice restaurant), brought us back beer from town, and even washed our vehicle before we left!

We rented a car from Belize City and drove the almost 3 hours to Hopkins. The main roads are paved, so the trip was relaxing and we were able to just take in the countryside. Epi greeted us and showed us to our unit, which is rather modest in American standards but completely adequate (stocked with everything we needed). As it turned out, we were the only guests there for the entire 8 days. Therefore, we were fortunate enough to really get to know the staff. Manuel is an official tour guide, so we went on 3 different excursions with him. We hiked Antelope Falls in Mayflower National Park (there is a pristine swimming hole at the TOP of the waterfall--the hike is strenuous, but worth it when you get there!). We drove to Xunantunich, which is a very impressive Mayan ruin. What's visible is amazing, but what's incredible is what's under your feet that's not yet been excavated. Then he took us to his home area of Punta Gorda. It's just a completely different area from Hopkins. He took us to swim in the river, and we witnessed 2 ladies doing their laundry in the river with rocks. It's fascinating and humbling!

There are more restaurants than we could possibly eat at in the area. Tina's was the most authentic that we tried (had barracuda and gibnut!). We drove to Plancencia twice. This is a more "touresty" area, but a nice change of pace. Just make sure you find the "sidewalk" on the ocean side of the road. This is where a lot of the shops and restaurants are. My daughter is into geocaching, and we even found a geocache in Placencia! That made her trip.

I was so sad for this vacation to end. We had fabulous weather and a fabulous time.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoyed your vacation. Our staff is awesome and are very good at taking care of our guests. It is great that you had fabulous weather. You were concerned with the weather forecasts you were seeing just before you arrived, but these generally report Belize City and the weather varies throughout the country. As you note, our staff are proud of their heritage and are knowledgeable about the country. Ethnicity is diverse in the country and it is interesting to see the cultural differences in the various regions in such a small country. Mayflower National Park is definitely a highlight - we love the waterfall and swimming hole at the top of the falls. A few months ago, we did a hike to the lower falls which also had a great swimming hole and not as strenuous. There are still other hikes that we have not yet explored. There is also Ziplining at the same entrance to the park. There is much that Belize has to offer, as you note, it is fascinating and humbling.

Wonderful Vacation

  • 5 of 5
We had a fantastic time at the Sarkiki Resort. There were four of us and the condo afforded plenty of space - although we were outdoors most of the time. We used the front patio a lot. Christine and Jim were the perfect hosts, making our visit feel like a stay with familiar friends. They were right on it with suggestions/ideas/booking trips. The Belizians who helped at the resort were also very helpful and very friendly.
We rented a car in Belize, the drive to Hopkins was 2.5+ hours away, but we got to see a lot of the countryside and stop along the way to visit other places. Having a car in Hopkins, for us, was a necessity. We explored much of the interior and along the coast.
We fixed brunch at the condo and ate dinner out in town. There were plenty of choices with an affordable range of prices. We were never disappointed in our dinners.
The only drawback were the no-see-ums. Blood thirsty little devils - but only when the on shore breeze was gone. Baby oil helped to curtail their meals.
The beach was always kept clean and a nice place to swim as it was shallow for quite a ways out into the bay.
I have no hesitation in recommending the Sarkiki Resort to anyone looking for a quite place to relax and relatively nearby day trips.

A wonderful beach, great accommodations and as friendly a people as you would want to meet near a really cute little town. First time to Central America but well worth it. Having been to several Caribbean islands this was every bit as good as any of them only less expensive in pretty much all categories. Relatively easy to fly from Vancouver BC at very reasonable airfare. Lots to do if you want from great snorkeling out past the Cays, seeing Mayan ruins to hiking up to the falls amongst other things. On the other hand if you just want to do much of nothing with the hardest thing deciding where and/or what to eat, very much available with wide variation of places to eat. If you rent a car at the international airport versus taking a short flight to get to the resort, plan on a 2 1/2 hour plus drive but appreciated having the car available during the stay. Also, like virtually all the Caribbean, there are biting insects. Regardless, neither of these factors would deter from highly recommending this wonderful getaway where virtually no one on the beach or swimming in the ocean. Sure do not get that in most tropic getaways!

Tubbs family

We went as a group of 16, ages ranging from 55 to 2 1/2 and stayed for 10 days through Christmas and New Years. We needed three units to accomodate everyone. The property was amazing (the photos don't do it justice) and Mike and Linda and the staff were fantastic. If anyone in our group ever had a question they were very willing to help and they were able to make arrangements for tours. Even with the resort being full at times it never felt crowded. It is not necessary but I would definitely recommend having a rental car for the feedom to explore Hopkins or to visit other parts of Belize. The dirt road from the Southern Highway to Hopkins and from Hopkins to the resort was not for the faint of heart but is scheduled to be paved beginning in the summer 2014. However, there is plenty to do at the resort and the Sittee River Marina is within 1/2 mile and can be walked to. The only complaint from anyone in the group was the sand flies. They are viscious and mostly undetered by bug spray. Baby oil works the best but there is no escaping them on calm days. However, everyone gladly accepted the insects to be able to swim in the ocean. My four children (all under 10) would begin swimming in the pool as soon as they woke up and would stay out all day long. The ocean was gentle enough and shallow enough that they could wade out a long way by themselves without trouble though we always required an adult to be with them. As a group we visited the Mayan ruins, walked through Cockscomb Basin, went shopping in Dangriga and Hopkins, snorkeled/fished out on the reef with Patrick and his crew (which was amazing), caved tubed in St. Herman's cave (just show up at the entrance and hire a guide there for only $45/person to save money and the tour lasts for 2 hours or you can take the dry tour for the same price to hike through other parts of the cave to see pottery and other artifacts). There were many other things we would have liked to have done but ran out of time. The people that we encountered were always friendly and helpful and we never worried about our property or our safety and almost everyone speaks English to some degree so communicating is fairly simple. Everywhere accepts US currency at a rate of 1:2 but they will almost always give change in Belizian currency and the ATM in Hopkins is easy to use if you need more money. Overall everyone agreed that it was a trip of a lifetime and were sad (some literally shed tears) to see it come to an end.

Sarkiki a great getaway

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I stayed at Sarkiki for two weeks over Christmas and New Years and it was perfect for us. Linda and Mike were super helpful with recommendations for everything from car rental to what spices to bring should the local stores not have what we needed/ were used to. It’s a self-catering resort - which suits us – anything/or any advice we needed we were able to just ask.?Sarkiki is relatively new and our suite was great – it was a 2 bedroom and we slept in the upper room. The beds were firm – which we liked – and very clean. Every room has a fan and AC and there was no problem sleeping! Sometimes too hard to get up – but hey – isn’t that what vacations are for!? The kitchen was very well appointed – fridge, stove, microwave, toaster, coffee pot, kettle and of course a blender! The tile floors were cool on the feet and super clean. We would venture that Belize is not a wine drinking culture - the rum and beer are however, excellent! When in Rome….?Each suite – aside from the ground floor unit has 2 upper decks that were great for daydreaming and napping by day – and starwatching by night. The sky was super clear and on the nights with a good breeze to keep the bugs away - even better. ?3 linked pools - clean and refreshing – and at the most 10 steps from our door – not that big – but the ocean was no more than 50m away - very shallow here for a long way out ?The shower was more than fine – water temperature the same as at home. It took a little more time to get warm water to 2nd floor, but not much. Shower was tiled and clean. The towels were clean and thick. ?A word about Sarkiki – 5 years ago there was nothing here – none of the landscaping, buildings, pool, or infrastructure. Unlike a lot of places – they have put in a grey water recycling system and waste is dealt with onsite. It’s a refreshing change and important for us to leave a smaller footprint when possible - it’s obvious that they have become a vital part of the local community. ?We enjoyed the company of our gracious hosts as well as other guests when we went into town for some of the local fare - these were the food highlights for us – never mind the larger resorts. ?
Would stay here again in a heart beat,
other -
renting a vehicle a must - lots to see in the region, bring good bug spray, bring a camera - beautiful region
