We've been to all side of the island and stayed at all levels of accommodations but I would give this one our top choice due to all it has to offer (great beaches, best views, size and comfort of accommodations, privacy and reasonable rates. We have been here multiple times and for good reason. The owner is a delight to work with and is very understanding of your needs or requirements. we must give them our highest recommendation if your looking for a very positive memory of Kauai!!

Great Weekend Getaway - Relaxing - Awesome View

  • 5 of 5
Even though a resident of Kauai, and Moloaa Bay is right out my back door, a group of us chose to take a weekend and getaway from the normal. I heard of this island style plantation cottage from a friend who saw the cottage. There are accommodations for 8 to sleep comfortably, space to cook for the same and plenty of room to eat inside or outside overlooking Moloaa Bay. We were out and about during the day, but gathered at night for dinner and and evenings under the stars. The heavens were beautiful! No moon, and very little residential lighting. I counted the shooting stars. The light breeze kept the mosquitoes away.
The house is built on an elevated area and has one of the best panoramic views of the bay, and probably one of top views around the island of Kauai. Couple that with the private, secluded location, and you have a relaxing and enjoyable weekend getaway: PERFECT for what we were looking for.
Moloaa Bay is not that well visited, as access and parking is limited, but this cottage provides your own access and parking: better than most visitors will ever have. Even though considered "beachfront" the drop to the beach is steep, so you will need to take a two minute walk down the sloped drive to where you have an easy access to the beach - no need to drive. In the water there is an area that is the calmest for easy swimming and suitable for kids, and a more wave crashing, rip current area for the stronger swimmer. Be cautious, though, it is not a lifeguarded beach. At either area the beach is awesome.
There is a hiking trail on the opposite side of the bay which is easy at first but you will end up climbing lava boulders. You can turn around anytime you like. There are great views from all around the bay.
Moloaa Bay is considered North Shore but from there you have easy access to all areas of the east and north and it is approximately 30 minutes (traffic dependent) from the airport.
The photos and descriptions are accurate and the property was clean and well maintained. We had no need to call the manager as everything worked properly. It's not the Ritz so don't expect high end appliances and furnishings; it's a cottage. The setting and privacy more than makes up for more lavish environments. The entry can be a little bit bothersome, as you have to go through 3 gates, but the end of the road is worth it.
ENJOY your stay in paradise!

Location location location is right. If you want an amazing secluded vacation, this is the place for you. It is extremely private and has all the accommodations. New windows and full kitchen, you will feel like you are at home. An AC would be nice but the breeze was good and has tons of fans. Kid friendly too. This was our second time at this house and we will defenatly go back again, worth every penny!

This property is in a beautiful location.

The house is older but it is pretty nice. It sleeps a lot of people which is nice if you have a big group wanting to stay in Kauai. The house has a beautiful view of the bay. In the bay you can swim, snorkel or explore the reef that is there. It does have a full kitchen so you can make your own food if you chose to.
There was some gecko poop around the house but that is common for Kauai because there are so many gecks.
All in all, this is a nice place to stay.

Owner's Response: unbelivable after all the hard work put into the house. It was spotless when they arrived.

My wife and I have stayed at this rental for extended times over a period of many years. The location is truly unique, one of the best on the island: 180 degree views of the entire bay, complete privacy, right on the shore, yet well above most tsunamis, nice breezes.
The house is old, has termites, but is dry and comfortable, with lots of view windows. Often there have been problems with the refrigerator and kitchen sink leaking onto the floor and other plumbing issues. It may be a disappointment to someone who is used to the upscale accommodations that are normally provided at this price.
Although there is easy physical access to the beach at the foot of the driveway, that requires crossing the private property of neighbors, and they have often objected to this. The nearest legal access to the beach is a walk of over a quarter of a mile away.
The bad news is that the utilities and maintenance are unreliable. On one visit, the power was off due to non-payment—on another the propane, on a couple of others the internet. In each case we had the bother of reinstating service, as well as paying several hundred dollars. The owner promised to reimburse us for these expenses, but did not.
On several occasions the owner booked other people at the same time as our reservations, so others were disappointed and had to make other plans on short notice. On one occasion the owner told us we would have to arrive two weeks later than our reservation, so we were the ones disappointed. The owner promised to reimburse us for the cost of changing our airline tickets, but did not. On our last visit in early 2014 we had an explicit written agreement that specified utilities be maintained, as well as “customary maintenance and yard care” and that the property be provided to us “in a clean and well-kept manner, e.g. grass mowed.”
When we arrived, the house had not been cleaned in two months, there were rodent droppings on the stove and countertops and in the kitchen cupboards, the kitchen sink leaked onto the floor, one shower was inoperable because the handle was broken, and the lawn hadn’t been mowed in 5 months. We cleaned the place ourselves, and had the lawn mowed at our expense.
Despite these difficulties, we have returned repeatedly because of the beautiful location. We have repeatedly tried to educate the owner that an agreement is not something that he can arbitrarily change when it suits him, but without success. We will not be staying there again.

Owner's Response: "BEWARE OF PEOPLE WHO USE HOME AWAY/VRBO AS A BULLING PULPIT!!". THESE PEOPLE DID NOT BOOK THROUGH HOME AWAY OR VRBO. How was it even possible to post a review??? These people have made threats in the past and are unscrupulous. This matter will be turned over to the legal department. They should not be able to post a review for their stay when they were not on vacation NOR DID THEY PAY ANY MONEY FOR THEIR STAY. The vacation rental was on hold and was not available for rental from Dec. 2013 to july 2014. They were responsible for maintaining the property during their stay. They also left the house unclean and we had to pay a cleaner at our expense. They claimed to have permission to park their car on the neighbors land for months while they were on the mainland, and trespassed on our property to get there. We called the owners and they said permission was never given nor did they even ask. It is unfortunate they are still hold bitter feelings because they wanted to buy this fabulous property and lost out. This is a personal matter and so many things that was said are NOT TRUE.
All bills are paid and up to date .And this [property is a legal vacation rental (TVR) Not all the homes advertised are. I hope Home away and vrbo revises their policy so people who truly book, stay and make payment through them can post a review. The place has never looked more beautiful. We made lots of improvements during our stay of this year including new windows and French doors opening up from the kitchen/dining area to a outdoor seating area with panoramic views of the ocean. We also installed French doors in the front bedroom to take advantage of the trade winds. We also did lots of trimming of shrubs and trees for a even better spectacular view. Which was hard to improve on. We expanded the front yard so that now you have a very spacious area on 200 plus feet of ocean frontage.. We also added a 60in. tv for adults and a 36in. for the kids. And a new large capacity front load washer. And we have Wi-Fi. We have a great staff of people taking care of this property. It's unfortunate that this disgruntled couple posted this unwarranted review in hopes of influenceing you not to book this location. The couple may never find a property as awesomel as this one. We do hope they find their own piece of paradise. Watch for the most current reviews to be posted soon, and judge for yourself. I can promise you this, you will not be disappointed with this magical place!

From the Owner

This property is the trump card of Moloaa Bay. This is the only home on the bay used as a backdrop for Gilligans Island filming. This property is unique in the World. I have been offered Millions of Dollars for this property, and I tell them this property is PRICELESS.

From the Owner

Location, Along with being the most private location on the Bay. No other home has a view like this home. The view of the reef along is magical. Because of the unique location you never have to worry about a rogue wave taking you out while your sleeping. It happened before all the homes on the bay were swept away except mine. Why? because my home sits on a bluff out of the way of danger
