Landmarked Townhouse Gem On Best Upper West Side Block! 7 NIGHT MINIMUM STAY

THIS IS A 7 NIGHT MINIMUM RENTAL. Beautifully restored but with all the modern comforts, this historic home was built along with 5 others in a row in 1886 by noted Spanish architect, Rafael Guastavino and is featured in several self guided NYC architectural walking publications. Located on a quiet, friendly, tree-lined street near the Museum of Natural History - 'Time Out Magazine's 'Best 50 Blocks in NYC' publication ranked our block #10! The home has just undergone a complete historical restoration of the front facade, bringing the home back to its original glory! Our 4 story, 5 bedroom, 4.5 bath home is the perfect respite from a busy day of sightseeing! Walk up the ornate stoop (great for sitting on to meet the neighbors or just watch the world go by) to the parlour level entrance and enter a wide open space that includes a light-flooded living and dining room that continues back through a large open pantry and breakfast bar to a large, fully stocked gourmet kitchen that overlooks the back gardens. Through the french doors, an ornate iron stairway takes you to the garden where you can dine alfresco on pleasant evenings. A teak dining table and chairs plus a covered living/lounge area provide ample seating for a festive BBQ (gas and charcoal). Back in through french doors at garden level is a home theater/den with a 52' flat screen television, reclining theater seats, a queen air mattress with bedding and an elliptical machine. There is also a kitchenette with sink, wine cooler and 2 drawer under-counter refrigerator and cabinets with BBQ supplies. A small half bath in the hallway outside of the den and a stairway leading up to the parlor level completes this floor. NOTE: we do have a long term tenant in a studio at the front of the house who is quite friendly and helpful; however there is a door in the hallway that closes and locks for complete privacy if you desire it. A beautiful carved mahogony staircase takes you up to the third level which contain master and guest bedroom suites. The master bedroom towards the back of the house has a king bed, love seat, television, walk in closet and tiled bathroom with a clawfoot tub, two person shower, and marble sink. There is also an ornate iron catwalk through the french doors that open onto a large deck overlooking the gardens. The guest suite has a king bed, lounge chair, television, tiled bathroom with shower stall and large bay window facing the street with its beautiful trees (3 seasons!) and the 8 additional row of Guastavino brownstones directly across the street. Up the final carved staircase is the fourth level that we call 'the kids floor' with 2 twin bedrooms and one double bedroom, a tiled bathroom with tub/shower, a tiled bathroom with shower stall, a laundry room and an open 'common room' which leads to a small deck also overlooking the gardens. There are ceiling fans in every room; central radiant heating and zoned air conditioning throughout the house. May not be suitable for groups with very young or infirm members.

Greta location and everything you need

  • 5 of 5
What a great place to stay, we travelled from Australia, 8 adults and 2 children. This property had everything you need, The location was fantastic and fairly quite, though close to everything and a short walk to the subway, which took us everywhere we needed to go. We had trouble with the heating and rang the owners who helped us straight away to try an rectify, it still didn't work but the owners sent someone around straight away to get it going. Great service, highly recommend this to anyone with an big group of travellers. Thanks, great place, great house, just perfect

Historic Townhouse for History Buffs

  • 5 of 5
It didn't dawn on us until we were sitting in the Registry Hall on Ellis Island looking up at the massive tiled ceiling that we had seen that ceiling in book on the mantel in the townhome we were staying in. Upon a little more research and with the help of articles on the piano and book on coffee table that the townhome was build by a rather famous and influential architect/build Rafael Guastavino. After building these townhomes on 78th Ave, he went on to build many famous buildings including Carnegie Hall, Boston Library, Astoria, etc, etc.

Ok, so if the history lesson doesn't impression, the townhome will. It's been wonderfully restored with modern updates and necessities. It's four levels each have distinctive touches that make the visit interesting and enjoyable (only caution is the stairs are steep, so if getting up and down stairways is an issue...this may be a difficult setup). The parquet floors are preserved showing old world craftsmanship (though creaky, but what do you expect from 130 year old floors).

One block off central park, 1/2 block from Museum of Natural History, it location is perfect to catch subways or buses to where you want to go in the city. Neighborhood is quite.

We've been going to NYC annually for past 15 years, staying in hotels, which are nice, but this is hands down the best spot we've stayed in. I could go on, but this place is indeed as advertised....a landmark masterfully restored.

An amazing trip in an amazing house!

We stay for one week in this house and it was absolutely perfecr in every way. We just had a little issue with the bathroom which has been sold within the day thanks the efficiency and marvellous organization of the owner.
We were 4 couples and the house thanks to its 3 twin rooms and the den was perfectlely equipped and scalled to host us.
The neighborhoud is very nice with lots of proximity stores and 2 sub station.
The kitchen is gorgeous, the room are large and comfortable as well as the different bathrooms.
Everything was perfectly clean and the laundry was sufficient.
We strongly recommend you to have a close look to this house if you are planning to stay in New York and to discover it in one of the most pleasent and american way!

Spacious, beautiful home with amazing amenities!

  • 5 of 5
We absolutely LOVED staying at this beautiful gem of a home! It is huge, great amenities, clean, comfortable, and the perfect location. We absolutely loved the backyard space and enjoyed eating dinner out there every evening. The kitchen was phenomenal to cook in! They have everything you need to make yourselves right at home in the kitchen. It is truly idyllic. It was fabulous being on the UWS right by the Museum and so many great restaurants and several train lines.

The bedrooms are beautiful and beds are incredibly comfortable. Bathrooms are also amazing! There is so much living space that we had plenty of space even though we had many of us staying! We felt incredibly safe and enjoyed every aspect of the stay. The home feels like a quiet refuge in the middle of the busyness and fun of the city! We feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to stay in such a luxurious home and thankful that the owners welcomed us!

The owners were amazing to work with and our stay could not have been more perfect! Thank you for an incredible experience! We cannot wait to come and stay again.

A spectacular home base for enjoying the UWS!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our 9-day stay in this gorgeous townhouse. We love New York and had wanted to experiment with “living there” beyond our usual weekend-long hotel stays. We quickly identified the house as the most spectacular option on the upper west side, and our stay included having my best friend and her husband stay with us the first weekend, preparing a dinner party for six later in the week, and enjoying time for just the two of us.
The house was meticulously clean, smelled great, and was well-stocked when we arrived, which we appreciated very much. We currently live in a contemporary, loft-like condominium in downtown Cincinnati, so spending time in a turn-of-the-century New York townhome with gorgeous floors, woodwork, and period bathrooms, was a welcome contrast and treat. The only potential negative for some might be the verticality of the house – it is four stories, with no powder room on the main level. I welcomed the opportunity to get my steps in all throughout the day, but my husband who’s recently been through spinal surgeries didn’t find that so easy.
I recommend the house to adult groups of friends or couples, and probably families with a little older children, just because it’s such a vertical home. We thoroughly enjoyed our time as temporary UWS residents, grocery shopping, going to many nearby restaurants and identifying our favorite morning coffee shop, taking long walks in the neighborhood and Central Park, and attending performances from Elvis Costello at Carnegie Hall to The Realistic Joneses play on Broadway, to Birdland, to Bemelman’s Bar at the Carlyle for cocktail hour. I also appreciated that Pure Yoga is about a block away, and purchased a week’s pass with which I sampled four different classes. The homeowner provided a very thorough guidebook with useful information and recommendations for shopping, restaurants, entertainment, and emergencies – everything we might need. She could not have been more accommodating.

An amazing vacation and an amazing townhouse

The property was perfect for a family of 7 even though you could technically have a couple of more. Very well kept, the kitchen and dining living areas were so comfortable we had to pull our kids out to go out. Could not be in a better neighborhood. we had a small issue with plumbing in the kitchen that was taken care of immediately by the owners. Wonderful service, would come back again for sure..
