Overview

Property Details

Updated: Oct 14, 2014
House, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 2-6)

You could be in Tuscany atop this private 10 acre, modern sanctuary, but you are nestled in the heart of Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma County, 20 minutes from the town square of Healdsburg, 1 1/2 hours from San Francisco.

Arriving at the property, you drive up the hill and take in the striking architecture not visible from the road. The slot window in the front door only hints at the dramatic interior – rich materials, color and art. Inside you'll find the breathtaking, all encompassing views from every space – vineyards that wrap the hills, mountains in the distance, hawks that hover in the updrafts of the valley below. No need to go to Italy for this experience.

Designed by San Francisco architect Jonathan Pearlman, the design offers a “warm modern” ambiance. Specifically framed views of the vineyards, mountains and natural landscape expand the indoor/outdoor living experience. This home is well appointed for your extended visit.

- Floor-to-ceiling glass windows and walls, with retractable panels to extend indoor/outdoor living between the living, dinning and kitchen spaces

- Fully equipped kitchen, including all integrated Miele appliances

- Main House - 1st floor guest bedroom w/ queen bed & bath w/ shower; 2nd floor master bedroom w/ king bed & bath w/ separate shower and Japanese soaking tub

- Pool House - A pool house offers a private bedroom suite w/ queen bed & bath w/ shower, overlooking the pool

- 46” HDTV, with DirecTV; DVD Bluray player; Bose surround system (indoors/outdoors) w/ IPod docking station

- Modern lighting and plumbing fixtures, and hardware

- Exquisite Finishes: slate, concrete, Calacotta marble, Italian ceramic and glass tiles, warm woods and steel create interesting textural combinations

- Modern Art Collection: abstract pieces that will inspire you

- 10’ X 48’ salt-water, heated black-bottom, glass-tiled pool/spa; outdoor shower (in-season heating included: usually May 15 - October 15; off-season heating usually October 16 - May 14 is optional w/ daily surcharge; actual weather dictates the season)

- Extensive patios surround the pool/spa and a 2nd story deck with floating, clear-glass panels overlook the vineyards - perfect for morning coffee or evening cocktails

If you can pull yourself away from the sanctuary of our hilltop, the town square of Healdsburg is filled with great restaurants, art galleries, shopping and entertainment. 80 wineries reside within the Dry Creek Valley, with additional wineries nearby in either the Alexander Valley or Russian River Valley. When you find your favorite libation(s), purchase and return home to settle in. And if you’re here in the Fall, don’t miss Tamara, the tomato lady, and her stand on Westside Road; her choice varietals will please the pallet too!

Our home is a wonderful retreat, best suited for sharing among individual friends and/or couples.

About the Owner

One Sunday afternoon, my partner and I were at the West Portal movie theater in San Francisco and I was pouring through the “Real Estate Times” rag during previews when I saw a picture of THAT view; I said to Jonathan that if the “real view” was anything like the picture, that’s a sweet property.

The next weekend, I visited friends in Sonoma County and I drove up to the property just in time for the sunrise; it was a quiet, tearful moment, one that I will never forget. The very next day, I asked Jonathan to return with me, and 2 months later, we owned the property! This was November 2002.

As an architect (Jonathan) and designer (Alan), our design process took a few years to settle upon a “final” master plan. I believe we nabbed the last construction loan available at the time, and embarked on our build-out in September '09, completing our home in September '10. I also lead the endeavor as the owner/general contractor.

We have been very clear from the onset of pursuing the project, specifically, that we create a sanctuary for whomever we had the pleasure to share our home with. It is with a heartfelt invitation that we hope you have an experience, privately or collectively, that nurtures and sustains your spirit; welcome.

Alan & Jonathan

I can't even begin to say enough good things about the Mill Creek House! I have been fortunate in my life to have stayed at some of the most incredible places in the world, and Mill Creek rates right up there with the best of them. It feels like you're at the Top of the World because you are looking out over the tops of trees and looking Down on big birds flying. The house is exquisite and the grounds are beautiful & peaceful. Just sitting out by the pool and listening to the soft whispers of the trees is wonderful
We were welcomed with wine and host d'ouerves and the coffee machine, etc. were first class.
This, obviously, is a home built by thoughtful and talented men and I feel very fortunate to have experienced it.

HEAVEN on earth!!

  • 5 of 5
As avid (UK) fans of California generally and repeat visitors to the Sonoma and Napa valleys over the last 10 years or more, I can honestly say that this was THE most wonderful place we have ever visited in this area.

For work and for leisure, my husband and I travel extensively and are lucky enough to have stayed at many pretty amazing establishments in Asia, the Americas, Northern and Southern Europe and beyond. Travel and luxury and appreciating our surroundings is "our thing". We would come back and stay in a heartbeat – it would be fair to say that this lovely retreat is quite firmly now in our top 5 list of our most favourite places anywhere!

The comments that precede my review echo 100% our own experience. The property is luxurious and so highly equipped, yet feels very homely and relaxing - you will want for nothing (except to stay longer of course!!). We too enjoyed the privacy, the amazing setting, surroundings and breath-taking, changing views and internally, the architecture and design. And, yes you've guessed it, we too cancelled our local dinner reservations in favour of cooking at home because it was just too much to miss to not be there to drink it all in! In terms of the local area, the property is well situated for touring the area and there’s plenty choice when it comes to great wineries and eating opportunities, whether casual or formal dining or food outlets to bring fab food "home" :-)

Come once and

a) you just won’t want to leave - evidenced by our own decision to extend our stay (thank you Alan - you gave up a night of your birthday celebrations for us which was very generous spirited of you indeed) and
b) you'll want to work out when is the soonest you can come back.

Alan could not have been more welcoming or accommodating. He greeted us on arrival to show us around and left us some lovely treats of wine and nibbles to get us started on our vacation. An added lovely touch - one of many.

I cannot recommend this property and its owner(s) highly enough.

Lovely, lovely, lovely - when can we come back please....?

Hidden Gem

  • 5 of 5
I highly recommend this property. This home is a hidden retreat in wine country. The property is in great condition and met all of my requirements for the weekend: private, luxurious, great kitchen and incredible setting. We ended up spending more time at the property than planned because we just didn't want to leave. The property owner was very professional and greeted us upon arrival to show us around. Will re-rent in the future.

At our recent visit at what we now call "Healdsburg's Hilltop Haven!" we were stunned and amazed by an extremely beautiful setting in wine country, at the crest of a small hill west of Healdsburg. The place is very private as we never heard neighbors and couldn't see anything beyond the sheer beauty of California's northern forests and vineyards. To top it off, the home is nothing short of spectacular. If you like light and windows and modern/contemporary look and feel, you will be right at home in this oasis! One of the highlights of the house, is that the main area has 3 floor to almost ceiling glass panes that are about 12 feet in length, and wrap around the kitchen and living areas. These open to the outdoors making the home feel like you are in a semi outdoor kitchen and living area. If you want to close them, you can and get air through higher smaller windows with screens. The efficiency of the home is great! Also, amenities were quite plentiful, and the owner personally greets you and spends about 20 minutes going over a few things in the home! The treatment and amenities are better than we have had in some of the high end resorts!

This place is great for vacations with friends or family! Our advice is to make sure to plan your trip so that you are able to spend some time at the house relaxing and enjoying. We ended up canceling a dinner reservation and cooked and ate at the house all three nights. One last thing, it's not a house to be loud, obnoxious, and "party." It's an oasis for good times, sharing, and relaxing! If you plan to party, please go somewhere else. The artistry, cleanliness, & beauty inside and out must be respected and preserved!

A Little Slice of Heaven!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed here for our 16th wedding anniversary and it was wonderful, even better than we had imagined! I knew from looking at the photos that this was not the usual "cutesy" vacation rental and it did not disappoint in person. Alan was there to greet us upon arrival and he gave us a quick introduction to the house and left us with an array of wonderful wine and snacks -- the perfect touch. During our stay, we had wonderfully warm weather (in the 90s) so the pool and hot tub were well used, the perfect spot to stay cool and gaze at the beautiful view. Being so far from town, it is quite dark at night and the stars are amazing, we even saw the international space station cruise over on it’s orbit as we lounged in the hot tub. Inside the house, every eventuality has been thought of. I like to cook, and every pot, pan or tool I needed in the kitchen was at my fingertips. Even the bathrooms were fully stocked with mini-sized amenities (soap, aspirin, razor, toothbrush/paste, etc.), just in case I had left mine behind. One word of warning…once you arrive you will not want to leave, so bring enough food to last you several days. Thank you for our wonderful stay, we can’t wait to come back!

Purely magical

  • 5 of 5
The photos in this listing are just the beginning of one's experience. Once you begin the journey to get there is quite another! Driving to the property, you pass acres of vineyards, beautiful Pacific Madrones and California Oaks. Then you arrive to the diamond in the rough atop the mountain, and wow! The home is nestled onto the land surrounded by the beauty of the natural landscape.
We sat on the patio every morning to sip our coffee and watch the slow dance of the fog roll below us weaving through the vineyards in slow motion, making its way to the edge of the horizon. Windows and vantage points placed throughout the home will remind you where you are: a place that will invite you to leave behind all the busy sounds and energies of a bustling world, and settle into the beauty, the solitude, and the many many comforts and amenities this home offers.
Jonathan and Alan have created not only an architectural beauty, but, have taken such great care to make sure that you are nurtured while you experience your stay. Our time at the mountaintop was the perfect place for us to spend time away from our busy lives, enjoy spectacular beauty and landscape and to also enjoy the great cuisine in nearby Healdsburg and Geyserville which are at your doorstep …. well, not exactly (remembering that you are on the mountaintop:))...but very close by. Thank you, thank you for opening your home to us.
