4 Bedrooms + Other private rooms w sleeping, 4 Baths (Sleeps 11-15)

Capture the Sunset. Relax on the deck with a drink and your loved ones while watching the sun set behind the beautiful Carolina mountains. Spend your vacation in this spacious house on the side of Sunset Mountain, overlooking Asheville. We are 3 minutes from Asheville, 10 minutes from The Biltmore Estate, 4 minutes from The Grove Park Inn and all that Asheville has to offer. This home will accommodate a large party without feeling cramped. It has an abundance of off-street parking, is very private (yet close) and is located on the original carriage road from Grove Park Inn to the Seely Castle. Seely Castle is just across the street and is the castle that Fred Seely (E.W. Grove's son-in-law) built after he finished construction on the Grove Park Inn.

Things to do: Downhill skiing,Cross Country Skiing, Spelunking, Hiking, Golf, Shopping and Racquetball. Fully equipped kitchen with eat in table and breakfast bar. 8 person hot tub located on lower level and enclosed in gondola for protection and child safety. HBO,Showtime, and more available. Garage: The upper garage is available for use. The lower garage is used for storage. Huge amount of off street parking. Parking for RV/Boat/Trailer ( sorry not class A). Wood Fireplace: cozy fireplace in lower master suite/ firewood is provided.)

Why this house!: New on the vacation rental market. We both grew up in the Asheville area and certainly there is no nicer place to live or vacation than in Asheville. This has been our home for the past 9 years, but with all of our children grown and gone we no longer need the space and are moving into a somewhat smaller house. We plan to travel some and having a smaller house to care for on a routine basis will work better for our situation.

Sophie's Retreat is convenient to all that happens in Asheville. We have enjoyed living in this wonderful house and will certainly miss the convenience. It will however make a great vacation rental with its 3 fireplaces, many rooms, plentiful parking and decks that go on forever. Please enjoy!

Additional Information: We purchased Sophie's Retreat as our principle residence in 2002 and chose the location for the views and the convenience.

Sophie's Retreat is extremely convenient and is right in the middle of everything important going on in this area. The house has views, is very spacious and convenient. The house was bought to live in and recently converted to a vacation rental. There are 4 ski areas close by, on the same road as the famous Grove Park Inn( don't miss their Sunday brunch) and 3 minutes from downtown Asheville where one can find shopping (especially craft and specialty vendors) and a great selection of restaurants.

Dogs welcome. This reminds me of an old joke that goes like this: A man wrote to a small hotel he planned to visit on his vacation. He wrote 'I would very much like to bring my dog with me. He is well groomed and very well behaved. Would you be willing to let me keep him in the room with me at night. An immediate reply came from the hotel owner who wrote: SIR: ' I have been operating this hotel for many years. In all that time I have never a dog steal towels, bed sheets, pillows, silverware or pictures off of the walls. I have never had to evict a dog in the middle of the night for being drunk and disorderly. I have never had a dog run out on a hotel bill. Yes, indeed your dog is welcome at my hotel. And if your dog will vouch for you, you are welcome to stay here too.'

About the Owner

We both grew up in the Asheville area and certainly there is no nicer place to live or vacation than Asheville.

It will however make a great vacation rental with its 3 fireplaces many rooms, plentiful parking and decks that go on forever.

Where did Sophie come from - well Stephanie's grandfather didn't particularly like the name Stephanie, he preferred Sophie and called her that. Stephanie was always pretty much a tom boy and loved to help her grandfather on the farm. She loved to go with him in his wagon to the store and to do various chores on the farm. She was always Sophie to him.

We enjoyed living in this house, especially the closeness to town and watching the wild life in the yard. There was almost always a gentle breeze in the summer and quite relaxing to sit on the deck and watch the sunsets. In the winter, it's like a winter wonderland when it snows - so quiet and serene. We were quite fond of building a fire in the fireplace and just relaxing during snow periods.

We hope you enjoy the house for your vacation and hope you will make a stay at Sophie's Retreat an annual event.

Please enjoy!

Guestbook comments from the owner

A great big thanks for letting us use your house for our stay. It was extremely convenient to Grove Park Inn and much more "homey". We had lots of room and really appreciate the high speed wifi as many of us had to work at night.

We will definitely stay with you again next year for the conference.

Many thanks

Asheville cycling trip

  • 4 of 5
We had a great time in Asheville. Everything was as described in the house description and pictures. Charlie responded quickly to any questions or issues that we had. Excellent customer service!
Our holiday purpose was an early season bicycling trip to bike ride where there was lots of hills. Asheville did not disappoint and despite the cool weather our expectations were exceeded.
The restaurants and brew pubs are too
numerous to mention and we weren't able get to all the places we wanted. It's good to have a list for next year!

Owner's Response: Thanks Scott for the good review. I guess 5 star reviews are getting harder to come by. The verbage seems to indicate absolutely no problems, at least there were no problems or concerns brought to our attention. We pride ourselves in addressing any problems immediately. Nevertheless Asheville is a great biking area both unpowered and powered. It is especially suited to two wheelers since we have a heated, well lighted double garage for tune ups and storage.
We thank you for choosing to stay at Sophie's Retreat and hope you will return again next year.

Great House! Great Location!

  • 5 of 5
We had a great time and the house was beyond our expectations! So comfortable and roomy! The homey touches were so nice. One afternoon we decided to stay in and play board games --- it was an awesome family moment with our grown children! It was so nice to be able to bring our dog with us! At night, the view is especially spectacular --- almost like the city turns on its lights just for us! Will definitely be back! The location was too perfect --- close to everything, but still so quiet with a rural feeling.

AMAZING Trip! THANK YOU!

  • 5 of 5
I apologize for writing this review a little late, but I cannot thank Charlie enough for helping us find the PERFECT home for our stay. The house was huge, gave us plenty of room to sleep and also had a ton of communal space. The view is amazing and we were just sorry we didn't have more time to enjoy it. The house is perfectly located 5 minutes from downtown, but set high enough so that you feel like you are miles away. Charlie did a wonderful job of helping us with information on visiting Asheville and he was incredibly accommodating with all of our requests.

I hope to visit Asheville again soon -- and I would definitely stay at one of Charlie's properties and highly recommend that you do too!

Owner's Response: Thank you for such a wonderful review. We love to hear that our guests have enjoyed their stay in the Asheville area. We try our best to make our guests feel at home here and help them maximize their vacation. Since we both grew up here and still live in the area, we feel well qualified to recommend places to go and things to see. Asheville is a dynamic area, changing every day and although we are not travel agents, we keep our eyes open and ears close to the ground as to what is happening. We are happy that you enjoyed your stay and certainly do hope you will stay with us again.

Perfect Home Away From Home!

  • 5 of 5
This was the perfect location for most of our family to gather and get organized for a family wedding, as well as to celebrate my sister's birthday! The house was clean and very comfortable. My mom was wishing she could take the entire kitchen home with us - yes, it was that great! The owner was great to work with throughout the entire process from first finding the property to our follow up conversation after we arrived back home. Everything that he promised was as promised and he even gave us a little history of the area and the house itself. The physical location was easy to find with his directions and gave us easy access to major roads leading to all the wedding events. We are all hoping to take another trip back to the location - this time when we can all just relax and enjoy the beauty of its location and the warmth of the home. It truly was a Perfect Home Away From Home for us!

Review of house

  • 4 of 5
The house overall was in good shape. A bit strange, for in order to take the trash and recycling out to the garage you had to go through the master bedroom, bathroom, walk in closet, then open the door to the garage. We laughed about this quite a bit. One word of advice, don't have a fire while you are hanging out in the hot tub. The cover over the hot tub holds the smoke in. The view, which appears would be gorgeous is blocked by the trees, owner stated he would be cutting them down some during the winter months. The house being right in Asheville was prefect for our trip.

Location

From the Owner

We purchased Sophie's Retreat as our principle residence in 2002 and chose the location for the views and the convenience. Sophie's Retreat is extremely convenient and is right in the middle of everything important going on in this area. The house has views, is very spacious and convenient. The house was bought to live in and converted to a vacation rental in 2009. There are 4 ski areas close by. Our house is on the same road as the famous Grove Park Inn( don't miss their Sunday brunch) and 3 minutes from downtown Asheville where one can find shopping (especially craft and specialty vendors) and a great selection of restaurants. The house if quite large and well suited for large groups with lots of room to spread out and have room to oneself. Our favorite of all was to take off on our motorcycle to the parkway for a short ride or a picnic after work or on the weekends.

Activity and Interests

1.3 miles from downtown Asheville/ 1/2 mile from Grove Park. The house is centrally located to the Asheville. One can easily be in downtown Asheville in less than 5 minutes. There are many restaurants, grocery stores and craft pubs located within several minutes of the house.

Other Activities: Kayaking, Wildlife Viewing, Hot Air Ballooning, Boating, Snowboarding, Rock Climbing, Health/Beauty Spa, Miniature Golf, Shopping

Golf: There are many courses in the area ranging from highly rated and pricey to less expensive. Our municipal course is surprisingly well groomed and affordable. Black Mountain is also a great, affordable course. Grove Park Inn course is one of the top rated in the area but is usually somewhat pricey. One can see this course from the house.

Ski: There are several ski areas within easy driving. Which one you choose depends on skiing ability and other factors. The larger areas are Beech and Sugar Mountain, are 1 1/2 to 2 hours away and tend to cater to more advanced skiers while the closer areas are Cataloochee and Wolfe Ridge. These are more family oriented and both have tube parks for those who don't ski or board. Both of these are about a hour away. There are other areas like Ober Gatlinburg and Appalachian that should be checked as well.

Charlie has been on ski patrol at Cataloochee for a number of years and is of course somewhat prejudiced but feels that this area is far superior to the others over all unless you are a very advanced boarder or skier. We have awesome snow making capability and are usually the first area to open on the East Coast. We also have the most professionally run operation and are the most family oriented. This is not only my opinion but am told this by customers every time I ski.

Amenities

From the Owner

The most unique benefit of this cabin is it's proximity to town and the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is at a higher elevation than the city but still has all of the protection and amenities of the City of Asheville. The cabin is well suited to large groups with lots of room to spread out and not feel cramped. It really is the perfect vacation cabin!
