Cottage, Studio + Sleeping Porch, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)
The front yard is steps away from one of the world’s most beautiful sandy beaches. There is great snorkeling, swimming, boogie boarding right in front of the cottage, depending on the swell, of coarse. Surfers can paddle out to the break from the front yard. This is also a perfect place to relax and just enjoy the ocean views. Besides other great views there are SPECTACULAR sunsets just about every evening. There are also early morning “full moon sets”, and occasional rainbows out over the ocean. (Makaha is on the dry side of the island). Watch dolphins, sea turtles and spouting whales from the front yard. This is truly a gorgeous one-of-a kind place!
The cottage is clean with off white tile throughout. There are two queen beds; one in the main studio and another in a screened porch sitting/sleeping room. Visitors can hear the ocean lapping on the sand from both rooms. A bathroom with a shower/bath tub connects the rooms from a patio. The street-side patio is very private and screened in. There are tables and chairs on both patios as well as in the main studio. There is also a gas barbeque on the ocean side patio. Both patios are covered.
The kitchen is fully equipped with dishes and pans. There is a large refrigerator with an ice maker, a two burner gas stove, microwave, toaster, toaster oven, blender, coffee grinder and maker.
Located one hours drive from Honolulu/Waikiki/North Shore, Makaha is close enough for day trips, but far enough away to enjoy a more natural, peaceful and casual Hawaii far away from the typical tourist hustle and bustle.
Makaha is known as the jewel of the Leeward Coast. A visitor can enjoy an authentic island style vacation. Makaha is famous for it’s winter surfing and was home to one of the early big wave surfing contests; the Makaha International Surfing Contest that was started the early 50s. Because of the 'winter' north swell the beach sand shifts dramatically from one end of the beach to the other. During the months of September/October to May /June (this varies depending on the direction of the swell) there is a large sand beach in front of the house. During the summer months visitors have to walk down toward the point several lots for the sand beach.
There are also diving caves, turtles, dolphins, whales and spectacular sunsets. There is a golf course minutes away as well as the harbor where a visitor can take dolphin and whale watch excursions, and deep sea fishing charters are also available. Centuries ago Makaha Valley was home to a group of Hawaiians (and their ancestors the menehune) who lived solely from farming and fishing. There is a ceremonial lava rock structure (He'iau) that has been restored by the Bishop Museum and is interesting to visit. Other amenities are the majestic Wai'anae Mountains
It is an uncrowded area and usually always has a lovely breeze coming down the valley.
Keywords: Located on one of the world's most beautiful beaches (Makaha Beach), a visitor is able to relax and enjoy ocean sounds, waves and great ocean views. There are amazing sunsets that can be seen from the front patio and lawn as they are steps away from the pristine sandy beach and clear blue ocean. One of the best buys in Hawaii for ocean front stays
About the Owner
I am a retired high school teacher and textile artist (Hawaiian Wearable Art). My youth was spent surfing at Makaha in the mid-50s. I lived in the cottage for many years and taught at the local high school (Wai'anae). After retiring I dyed and printed silk and had a small workshop and boutique where I made and sold my clothing, sarongs, hats, and other creations. I have since moved to Honolulu where I live and have a mini rescue station and home for homeless cats. A lot of the money I receive for cottage rentals goes to feeding and taking care of cats and dogs in need of food and shelter. I still visit occasionally to swim and garden. The cottage is adjacent/attached to our family home where my sister Gloria lives and is the site manager. She is a quiet solitary person and is centered on the opposite side of the cottage. She will help out in an emergency, but not bother or invade anyone's privacy.

We loved the history of the cottage and Gloria and Sean were very friendly and helpful. Vicky was easy to deal with and helped us with any questions or concerns. She directed us to an awesome beginner surfing beach just 10 minutes away where we spent most mornings (army rest camp/pokai bay). Good snorkling there too!
It was the perfect holiday!
Great Beach, decent place, decent location
There is very good snorkelling off the beach - there are a few boats that take tourists from the marina to a reef in the direct vicinity.
The cottage is a cottage. There is wifi, a futon bed, a normal bed, fridge, indoor gas camp grill, outdoor bbq, microwave, small coffee maker and pots/pans/dishes. Lots of reading material and local music. Place includes its own bathroom and shower.
The owner's sister and grown nephew live next door in the attached main house - but they are helpful and mind their business when not approached.
There is a carport with room for one car. You'll need to rent a car as Makaha isn't close to much.
This side of the island is the poorest area and reminds me of mexico a bit but feels safe enough and we were never bothered by anyone.
You'll need to drive to any trendy foodfare, but there is a decent grocery store/liquor store/market/drug store within 10 minute drive and a couple local eateries which we didn't try out.
The place is about an hour from Waikiki, 30 mins from the Disney resort at KoOlena.
You CAN'T drive directly to the North shore along the northwest coast...there used to be a road there, but now there isn't. You have to go inland and up. It's only 25 minutes or so but we had visions of being closer which is why I'm including it in my review.
If you want a beach that is basically your own private beach where you don't feel like you have to hide your cell phone in your beach, then this is the spot. We fell asleep listening to the sound of the waves but the road noise is also there to compete a little bit.
There is a small patio just out the door that has some xmas lights for ambience where we would drink wine and listen to the waves. You can't REALLY see the beach from here due to the privacy hedge. We just moved the chairs 30 ft down to the beach if needed.
There are towels, a couple of boogie boards, snorkels, beach toys etc supplied. Ice cube trays in the freezer.
perfect private beach cottage
Location, Location, Location...
You do not get all this at the reasonable price offered without a few tradeoffs; that being said you are on the dry side of the island directly off the perimeter highway. The cottage is very open air and has several resident geckos (they eat the bugs). It is mostly local on the leeward side of the island, which means you have a drive ahead of you if you wish to visit many other tourist destinations on the island. Traffic can be little heavy at times and the locals have a interesting driving style which takes some getting used to. None of these elements were detractors from our enjoyment of the place.
We had one of the best vacations we have ever had here. When we were at the Makaha Cottage it was so relaxing and restorative.
Is this place for everyone, in a word NO. If you are looking for a resort feel or B&B type of place, look elsewhere. If you are self sufficient and want a really awesome home base in an wonderful location, with as much or as little support from your hosts as you want/need and can accept a few "quirks" which come along for the ride, this is the place for you.
Fabulous Makaha Beach !
From the Owner
“My mother bought this property in 1956. She went out to Makaha to surf and visit a friend who she met surfing at Waikiki. There was a for sale sign on the property nexr door. She took one look at the ocean and another look at the valley and said, 'this has to be mine.' She lived a wonderful long life there until her 99th year. She spent the last part of her life writing Haiku Poetry and can be seen on UTube-Betty Winstedt.”
