Cottage, Studio + Sleeping Porch, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

The front yard is steps away from one of the world’s most beautiful sandy beaches. There is great snorkeling, swimming, boogie boarding right in front of the cottage, depending on the swell, of coarse. Surfers can paddle out to the break from the front yard. This is also a perfect place to relax and just enjoy the ocean views. Besides other great views there are SPECTACULAR sunsets just about every evening. There are also early morning “full moon sets”, and occasional rainbows out over the ocean. (Makaha is on the dry side of the island). Watch dolphins, sea turtles and spouting whales from the front yard. This is truly a gorgeous one-of-a kind place!

The cottage is clean with off white tile throughout. There are two queen beds; one in the main studio and another in a screened porch sitting/sleeping room. Visitors can hear the ocean lapping on the sand from both rooms. A bathroom with a shower/bath tub connects the rooms from a patio. The street-side patio is very private and screened in. There are tables and chairs on both patios as well as in the main studio. There is also a gas barbeque on the ocean side patio. Both patios are covered.

The kitchen is fully equipped with dishes and pans. There is a large refrigerator with an ice maker, a two burner gas stove, microwave, toaster, toaster oven, blender, coffee grinder and maker.

Located one hours drive from Honolulu/Waikiki/North Shore, Makaha is close enough for day trips, but far enough away to enjoy a more natural, peaceful and casual Hawaii far away from the typical tourist hustle and bustle.

Makaha is known as the jewel of the Leeward Coast. A visitor can enjoy an authentic island style vacation. Makaha is famous for it’s winter surfing and was home to one of the early big wave surfing contests; the Makaha International Surfing Contest that was started the early 50s. Because of the 'winter' north swell the beach sand shifts dramatically from one end of the beach to the other. During the months of September/October to May /June (this varies depending on the direction of the swell) there is a large sand beach in front of the house. During the summer months visitors have to walk down toward the point several lots for the sand beach.

There are also diving caves, turtles, dolphins, whales and spectacular sunsets. There is a golf course minutes away as well as the harbor where a visitor can take dolphin and whale watch excursions, and deep sea fishing charters are also available. Centuries ago Makaha Valley was home to a group of Hawaiians (and their ancestors the menehune) who lived solely from farming and fishing. There is a ceremonial lava rock structure (He'iau) that has been restored by the Bishop Museum and is interesting to visit. Other amenities are the majestic Wai'anae Mountains

It is an uncrowded area and usually always has a lovely breeze coming down the valley.

Keywords: Located on one of the world's most beautiful beaches (Makaha Beach), a visitor is able to relax and enjoy ocean sounds, waves and great ocean views. There are amazing sunsets that can be seen from the front patio and lawn as they are steps away from the pristine sandy beach and clear blue ocean. One of the best buys in Hawaii for ocean front stays

About the Owner

I am a retired high school teacher and textile artist (Hawaiian Wearable Art). My youth was spent surfing at Makaha in the mid-50s. I lived in the cottage for many years and taught at the local high school (Wai'anae). After retiring I dyed and printed silk and had a small workshop and boutique where I made and sold my clothing, sarongs, hats, and other creations. I have since moved to Honolulu where I live and have a mini rescue station and home for homeless cats. A lot of the money I receive for cottage rentals goes to feeding and taking care of cats and dogs in need of food and shelter. I still visit occasionally to swim and garden. The cottage is adjacent/attached to our family home where my sister Gloria lives and is the site manager. She is a quiet solitary person and is centered on the opposite side of the cottage. She will help out in an emergency, but not bother or invade anyone's privacy.

Location, Location, Location...

The best part about this place is the location. You are steps away from the beach and when I mean steps it is literally a stones throw distance from the back slider to the beach. And it is not a scrubby beach it is pristine gem of a beach which you can enjoy without having to make an outing out of it and most of the time you can count the number of other people on one hand. You could get back from a day out and just wander out to enjoy for a few minutes. If you are adventurous you can paddle out to the middle of the cove which contains coral reef and many colorful fish (look out for where the tourist boats drop their people on tours) that is how close and awesome this beach is, the sunsets are breathtaking. Additionally, you can hear the waves break and crash in sets all night long.

You do not get all this at the reasonable price offered without a few tradeoffs; that being said you are on the dry side of the island directly off the perimeter highway. The cottage is very open air and has several resident geckos (they eat the bugs). It is mostly local on the leeward side of the island, which means you have a drive ahead of you if you wish to visit many other tourist destinations on the island. Traffic can be little heavy at times and the locals have a interesting driving style which takes some getting used to. None of these elements were detractors from our enjoyment of the place.

We had one of the best vacations we have ever had here. When we were at the Makaha Cottage it was so relaxing and restorative.

Is this place for everyone, in a word NO. If you are looking for a resort feel or B&B type of place, look elsewhere. If you are self sufficient and want a really awesome home base in an wonderful location, with as much or as little support from your hosts as you want/need and can accept a few "quirks" which come along for the ride, this is the place for you.

Fabulous Makaha Beach !

  • 5 of 5
The cottage was rustic, funky, and charming, and the beach was incredibly beautiful. We went to Waikiki, Ko Olina, Pearl, and other sights, but every day began and ended with the beach. The sunsets were mesmerizing. After leaving the cottage, we visited four other islands, and Makaha had the best beach of them all.

Amazing Beach

This place is a gem. The beach house is not fancy, but it is a true Hawaiian beach house. I sat on the beach for days and usually had it all to myself or sharing it with only a few people. My husband could surf right off the beach. We had a great time; Gloria and Sean, the hosts, were fabulous; great people!. We met some wonderful people in this little town and enjoyed ever minute. Thank you!! Jane and Mac

Private, lovely get-away.

This Makaha cottage was exactly what we wanted...away from hustle and bustle and directly on the beach. If you want to hear the waves day and night, this is the place! And although you can't see the ocean from inside the unit, the shrubbery that obscured the view also provided privacy from those who were walking and surfing in front of the cottage. When we wanted to watch the waves, we simply brewed a cup of coffee, picked up a lawn chair, walked through the gate, and planted ourselves on the sand for as long as we wanted. Others have snorkeled here, but waves were high enough for surfers on our visit, so we snorkeled a bit south, around the breakwater at Pokai Beach, where we saw lots of fish and several sea turtles. If relaxing, beaching and snorkeling isn't enough for you, the north shore beaches and towns are only an hour away.

In addition to lawn chairs and boogie boards, some snorkel equipment is in a basket beside the house, but the flippers were either too small or too larger for me. Since we wanted to snorkel a lot, I bought a pair for $25 in Waimea and I was all set!

The kitchen is sufficiently equipped for everything we cooked, and we bought the best fresh papaya and pineapple I've ever eaten at the local grocery store. ...but I was glad I'd brought a small tupperware container and zip lock bags to keep them in after we cut them up.

The owner, Vicki, was very personable, efficient, and good to work with. Her sister and nephew who live in the house attached to the cottage, Gloria and Sean, managed to perfectly balance cordiality and allowing us our privacy.

Our only complaint would be that the screen for the sliding doors from the garage/porch into the unit is the wrong size, and since you have to pass through it to get to the bathroom, this was a small nuisance.

On our final morning, we stood in the front yard and watched a whale smack the water over and over again with its tail. What more could we ask?!

Owner's Response: Yes, I think the screen door needs to be fixed and/or replaced. I have not done this before because the a joining patio (room) is screened in and locked so the screen door is really not necessary to close. It is like closing one door between rooms-not really necessary under most circumstances. But, I will address this issue asap

We had a marvelous time at our seaside cottage rental on Makaha Beach. Not fancy, but clean and charming with an awesome view of the ocean. Extremely friendly owner who is easy to work with. Can't beat waking up each morning and having a seaside breakfast on the back patio. Time stands still.

Location

From the Owner

My mother bought this property in 1956. She went out to Makaha to surf and visit a friend who she met surfing at Waikiki. There was a for sale sign on the property nexr door. She took one look at the ocean and another look at the valley and said, 'this has to be mine.' She lived a wonderful long life there until her 99th year. She spent the last part of her life writing Haiku Poetry and can be seen on UTube-Betty Winstedt.

Activity and Interests

Surfing, boogie boarding, stand up paddling, kayaking, shelling, beach walking, tide pool and natural rock pool at opposite end of beach, close by weekly farmers market. Visit restored ancient Hawaiian he'iau (ceremonial monument)
