Caribbean Paradise - Steps to Beach, Exotic Gardens, Wildlife

Property Details

Updated: Apr 20, 2015
House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 5)

This home is a nature lovers paradise! It is nestled in a beautiful garden full of flowers and fruit trees AND is only 200 yards from the warm waters of the Caribbean. The yard is so full of wildlife that you will see more animals, birds, and reptiles than you will in the Cahuita National Park. On almost any given day, you will see or hear toucans, iguanas, exotic butterflies, sloths, parrots, howler monkeys, agoutis, or tropical frogs. This home is very unique in Cahuita. No other home in our town will allow you such a personal relationship with nature. We are fortunate that a wild sloth that has chosen to live in our Almendra tree only 5 meters from the house!.

This home provides you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the real Costa Rica without sacrificing any modern conveniences. You will have a full sized kitchen with quality brand name appliances, wifi internet, a safe for your laptop and other valuables, an on demand tankless hot water, and an American purification system for drinking water.

If you choose to leave this Garden of Eden, within a 5 minute walk from the house you can – take a surf lesson, go horseback riding, snorkel, savor the delicious local cuisine of the Paradise Restaurant or enjoy the calming vibes at Reggae Bar.

Downtown Cahuita is a mere 15 minute walk away – just far enough to ensure your tranquility yet not so far that you will need a car. There you will find a mix of wonderful restaurants, shops, bars and tour agencies to cater to your individual needs.

And don’t forget the Cahuita National Park. There you can play on the beach, kayak or simply admire the acrobatic skills of monkeys as you walk through the jungle.

If comparing listings, may I suggest a few questions you ask the owners prior to making a decision:

1) Will I have to cross a highway from your home to reach the beach?

2) From your home, is the nearest access to the ocean made of sand or huge old coral formations?

3) Do you have a purification system for drinking water? Don't lose precious vacation time due to stomach illness.

4) Can I flush toilet paper down the toilet or will I have place it in a waste bin next to the toilet?

About the Owner

I went to university and spent my adult life in Los Angeles. My traveling outside the U.S. had been pretty limited. In 1996 I decided to visit Costa Rica. The wildlife, friendly people, and warm beautiful waters made me fall in love. From that point forward I decided to save money and move to Costa Rica as soon as possible. That was finally accomplished in 2006. I now allow people to rent my home not only to help provide me with income but more importantly share the true Costa Rica in a true home and community with others. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. PS That is Bruno in the profile picture with me.

A peaceful paradise

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I stayed at Troy's to escape the cold of Canada. It was perfect. We were looking for a place to relax near the beach, with lots of wild life but not too far from town. Troy is a very gracious host- meeting us at the house to explain what to do, where to go and basically just familiarize us with the area. We felt right at home instantly. The house is very well-maintained and provided us with every comfort we could have hoped for. The internet is super fast, filtered water and little things like a coffee grinder were all really appreciated. Cahuita is a very sweet little beach community. The kind of place where everyone says hello. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back. Thanks again Troy!

Totally Awesome

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I along with another couple stayed at Troy's for 12 day's. The house is awesome, very comfortable and clean. Waking to the sound of the howler monkeys is amazing. The beautiful birds in the yard are fun to watch while sitting on the porch in the morning sipping on a cup of coffee. The yard is beautiful. We never rented a car, it's only a 15 to 20 minute walk to town where there are plenty of good restaurants to choose from. There's a Reggae bar within a 5 minute walk from the house that's a fun hangout. The food is good, beer is cold and a combination of locals and expats. Everyone super friendly. We never felt unsafe even walking home from town after dark. Troy was the most gracious host we've ever encountered since we've been using VRBO. He answered all our questions when we arrived, was no problem reaching him if we needed something, and even sat and talked with us for a couple of hours on the do's and don'ts of buying property in Costa Rica. All in all the stay at Troy's was beyond amazing.

Owner's Response: Hi Joe and Julie!
Thank you for the nice review. It was fun getting to know both of you. I felt like this area was perfect for you. You made friends with everyone so quickly!
I hope you will become my neighbors sometime soon. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help make that happen.

Wonderfull place and experience

  • 5 of 5
I arrived in February in Costa Rica, I stayed with my husband in the beautiful house of Troy.
I was immediately seduced by the environment, the beautiful garden, the flowers of all colors.
Bruno the sloth from the comfort of a tree, displaying a teasing smile of welcome.
Everything in this property calls for calm and zen.
The house is just as welcoming, everything is what I needed, nothing is missing.
The importance there, it is only necessary to enjoy and relax.
The house is tastefully arranged, very clean.
Owner Troy is available, showing all the necessary information and to practice my stay.
In summary, my experience went wonderfully,
I relaxed, inspired by the magic of this place.
I leave Costa Rica with a souvenir colors and smells of this beautiful house, which I will talk to my friends with great pleasure.
Thank you to Troy,
Owner of the quality of services.

I’m sorry for my bad english, I come from Italy

Our favorite Costa Rican rental

  • 5 of 5
The 4 of us stayed at Troy's wonderful house- myself, my wife and two children 11 & 16. We have stayed in many rentals around Costa Rica over the last few years, so we had a good idea of what to expect. However, Troy's place exceeded our expectations. It is a beautiful house that allowed us personal access to the wonderful nature of Costa Rica as well as the warm Caribbean ocean. This, combined with the luxurious amenities of home made it the perfect place to visit.

From the very beginning to the end it was a truly unique and wonderful experience. Troy, the owner and property manager, greeted us at the house upon our arrival. There he took his time making us feel at home with the house as well as answered all of our questions regarding restaurants, tours, best places to snorkel, where to buy the freshest fish and from whom, etc. It was extremely helpful as he has lived in the area for many years and knows all the best local information.

My favorite memories here were simply spending time on the front porch admiring the naturally landscaped garden with the accompanying wildlife. It was incredibly relaxing and a true pleasure. My wife enjoyed reading/napping on the upstairs balcony hammock overlooking the yard. The sloths (there were three in the yard one day), toucans, parrots, agoutis, monkeys and exotic butterflies (all seen daily) are such a thrill to see. The garden is a paradise- filled with dozens of orchids, fruit trees and wonderfully fragrant flowers (my favorite was Reina de la Noche, each is almost a foot long!).

My personal thoughts when considering renting a home on VRBO and how this home compares. First of all, the water is safe. He has modern, very effective water filtration system. Second, the location is perfect! A two minute walk to the beach and a couple cute beach restaurants. Third, the internet and WiFi are super fast. Fourth, and sometimes most important of all, Troy is the owner/caretaker. This is often overlooked but I definitely notice a difference between caretakers and owners. Whereas many caretakers kind of go through the motions when checking in guests, owners tend to be much more caring and enthusiastic about ensuring your pleasant stay. Troy went out of his way to make sure every aspect of our trip was enjoyable.

Thanks again Troy. We will see you again next year!

Beautiful location, but house needs some TLC(tender Loving Care)

  • 3 of 5
We stayed here the first week of February, 2015. The garden is fantastic. The home is cute. However the mattress on first floor is only 2 inch foam and you could feel the board. The outside fan on patio did not work and Troy knew about it. I had to request a plastic table cloth as the cotton one was full of gecko poop. The cushions on the chairs outside are just pillows and full of mold. The safe is a big problem to get at especially if you are only 5'2". Troy never contacted us during the week and did not answer calls. I too am a VRBO owner and am perhaps a little too critical. If you are allergic to mold this is not the place to stay. The fixtures were filled with mold and had not been cleaned for some time. Cahuita is a wonderful friendly and safe village with wonderful food. The National park is awesome. If you like horseback riding go to Brigitte.

Owner's Response: Marcia, I am sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay at my home. This is the first and only negative review I have ever received. I am not sure how to respond to it as it comes out of the blue. It feels more like a personal attack than a review because your statements are either exaggerations or in many cases, completely untrue. However, I do feel it is very necessary to respond as I take my home and my guests happiness very seriously.

I actually had email contact with you nine times you during your stay. In my work as a travel agent I am on the phone and computer every day and am always accessible should a guest need to contact me. You never called me during your stay or I would have immediately responded.

My downstairs mattress is a standard 8 inch mattress, as is every mattress in my home. If I provided a 2 inch foam pad as a mattress I imagine one of the other 23 reviews, all of which are 5 stars, would have mentioned it.

I have never received a complaint about mold.

The outdoor plastic table cloth that you requested (and received, although if you weren't able to contact me and I never responded to you I am not sure how that happened) was given to you because you had placed the patio table directly under the outdoor lighting fixture. Gecko's are attracted to outside lights. No matter where you stay in Costa Rica, undoubtedly a gecko will park himself near the light in the evening to eat the bugs attracted to it. Slightly shifting the table so it wasn't directly under the light or wiping it off each morning easily solves that issue. I explained that to you when I gave you the additional table cloth.

The safe in the house is secured about 12 inches from the ground. To say it is a big problem because you are 5' 2" doesn't make any sense to me. I am not sure how to respond to that complaint as I don't understand the link between your height and using a safe.

Marcia I am sorry if you somehow felt offended by something I said or did. That is the only logical answer I can come up with for such a strange misrepresentation of my home.

If any potential guests are concerned about the mattress thickness or safe or anything else mentioned in Marcia's review, I will be happy to send photos prior to your reservation.

immaculate home and great surroundings

As everyone else has said this is a great house, clean, well equipped with everything we needed.
We loved all the wildlife and birds that visited the yard.
The veranda is comfortable and a great place to spend time and eat meals.
Troy was very easy to work with and went out of his way to provide everything we needed.
Unfortunately he double booked the house for some of the time but he helped find another house nearby and kindly helped us move. (The houe we moved to was unfortunately not as nice as Troy's as we had been spoiled by Troy's house)

From the Owner

I chose Cahuita after spending a lot of time in other areas of Costa Rica and Central America. I have found it to be what I had always envisioned paradise to be - sunny, warm, green, full of wildlife and culture.
