About the Owner

My name is John Zisa and I am proud of what has been accomplished at the Quarry House. I’m sure you will find interest as well as relaxation. When the house is not rented by vacationers I am here working on projects usually shaping something from stone or some other art medium for my clients or myself. I have a few intriguing projects around the property and plans for many more. I look forward to hearing from you and helping to make your visit an enjoyable experience.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our stay at the Quarry House was amazing! ♥

We enjoyed every miniute of it… the deer in the morning was probably the most amazing part although the trees and other wildlife were things we will always remember. Until next time, Quarry House, ♥

Great Christmas

  • 5 of 5
We had a great 3 night stay through Christmas while visiting Yosemite. The open kitchen, living and dining areas made activity and travel flow smooth for our 5 people. The house was well stocked and equipped.

Hmm, it could be better

  • 2 of 5
The house is in good condition like the pictures. Kitchen is fully equipped. However, there are a few other comments:
1) driving distance is 45 min from Yosemite entrance
2) Owner wrote down a list of chores needed to be done before we left: sweep the kitchen floor, put the dirty towels in the laundry basket in laundry room, put away clean dishes from dish washer, take all garbages outside. But the owner charged a good amount of cleaning fees. I rented other vacation houses before, other owners usually told you to enjoy your stay and not to worry about the mess afterwards. It's my first experience of working the routine chores like home.
3) The dryer doesn't work well.
4) One of the bedroom doors is a glass door. It's good for your kids stay in this room. We need to use a bed sheet to shield for privacy.
5) It would be nice if the BBQ grill, patio tables & chairs are clean to use in the backyard.

Quarry House in Mariposa

  • 2 of 5
Good: Open areas, storage, full kitchen,
Bad: water pressure (very low), long distance from South entrance of Yosemite, not AC (had a swamp cooler that only cooled the living room), pillows-hard, beds- some too soft, others very hard, tiles on the master bathroom are loose and very slippery,
Ugly: Wifi (spotty), outside areas not usable, window screens not fitting (bugs coming in), cleaning fees (after you pay, they tell you to do a list of chores that are not covered by the fees you already paid), dead dear in front of the house and no one removed it! I called the owner but he never replied my call. The smell was so bad that we had to sleep with the windows closed (on a hot summer night!).

Owner's Response: I always encourage guest to call me or email about any concerns they have. In most cases I can explain where things are or how to use something guests may not be familiar with. The cleaning fee with reasonable chores is common for this area and for vacation rentals that I have personally stayed at while on vacation. I wish that this guest could have had a better stay; this is a very special place to me and I look forward to sharing that experience with my visitors. The phone call I received was late at night and the night before check out. I personally inspected all of the concerns that the guest listed above. There is a loose tile on the bathroom floor, which is being fixed. The floor is no slicker that any other floor, and does have a mat down to prevent accidents. I could not find a dead dear or smell, the county usually takes care of roadside carcass removal on a timely basis. I could not find any issues with the wifi. The outside area is open and naturally landscaped with an outdoor patio dining set. The heat may have kept guests from using the outdoor areas, but we do have usable spaces. The window screens are all sized to fit and have no holes or gaps. Water pressure is great. The best access to Yosemite from Quarry House is to the Arch Rock Entrance Station on Yosemite's only All Weather Hwy - Hwy 140. If you would like to access Yosemite through the south entrance the best place to stay is in Fish Camp. Please read the previous reviews that state most of these things in good working order and are five stars.

Promising but disappointing

  • 2 of 5
We arrived around 7PM and the house was extremely warm inside. The only fan was the fan I brought from home. My family visiting from Florida were a little concerned about their safety junky cars outside and the area is out in the sticks. We made dinner and when we were cleaning up the dishes noticed the garbage disposal wasn't working and water was leaking from the dishwasher on the laminate floor. Then we discovered ants everywhere; on the kitchen counter, bathroom counters, and every else in the house. We found bugs in the sheets (no bed bugs). We had to finish washing dishes outside; the kitchen sink was clogged. The outside needs to be cleaned up sticker bushes knee high we were unable to walk in the backyard. I tried to contact the owner the evening we arrived but didn't receive a response until the next morning. He did apologize and had someone fix the garbage disposal that day. The ant problem however still remained. The inside garbage hadn't been emptied and the garbage cans outside were full. One bedroom had a glass door so the person staying in that room had to change in the bathroom. The beds were comfortable, plenty of hot water. Nicely stocked dishes and pots&pans. I don't think we will be returning to this rental!

Owner's Response: It's unfortunate that this group was unable to locate the cooling system and the ceiling fan controls. I try to provide the answers to frequently asked questions in the arrival information that I provide to each guest before they arrive. All other information is available in the Quarry House Binder readily available in the house. Additionally I am always available by phone. Its true I didn't get the message until the next morning about the garbage disposal. But that's part of living in the "sticks"; the cell service can be spotty in area's. Because of that I provide guests with a local and long distance land line phone service at Quarry House and without additional charge. The garbage disposal was promptly fixed the culprit found to be a bottle cap. Rut-ro those don't belong in the garbage disposal!! The kitchen sink was clogged because the garbage disposal expected to shred bottle caps. So that got fixed immediately as well. The junky car described has been donated to a nonprofit to help find homes for abandoned puppies. A previous group visiting Quarry House thought it would be fun to throw rocks at my vehicle... They won't be returning to Quarry House either. Ants: There haven't been ants in Quarry House for years. I am disappointed that the queen ant chose to enter while guests were residing. An exterminator came and applied chemicals to the outside of the house. I don't allow them to spray inside because I don't want chemicals inside the house. This technique has always worked in the past.

The place was comfortable. They need to repair a few things like the loose bathroom tiles. Wasn't crazy about the cooling systems and should let people know there isn't TV available. The outside was a mess and should be cleaned up a bit.

Memorable Stay

  • 5 of 5
We were very comfortable during our 5 night stay at the Quarry House. We cooked in most nights and the kitchen set up was perfect. The house lived up to the description of being very clean. It was nice to have a washer/dryer on the premises. The location was perfect as well -the ride to Yosemite was approximately 50 minutes. We would definitely recommend this rental property.
