Although tucked away and private, Castillo is also home to The Butterfly Conservatory, Snake Zoo, The National Park Arenal 1968, and a diverse selection of restaurants.

If you like to push yourself, there are also off road bicycle tours in the hills around El Castillo as well as guided hiking tours through the rain forest. In and on the way to La Fortuna you can find White Water Rafting, a number of hot springs pools facilities, ATV tours, and many other adventures.

After your exciting days of adventure you can leave the fast pace of tourism and go back to your home in El Castillo, traveling through tunnels of rain forest and the beautiful countryside in and around the beautiful village of El Castillo. TRAVEL DIRECTONS:

From San Jose, take the Panamerican Highway to San Ramon, exit when you see the sign directing you to San Ramon and drive through the town of San Ramon following the signs of the Arenal volcano route. You will go through Bajo Rodriguez, La Tigra, Chachauga and then finally to La Fortuna. We suggest that you use a GPS mapping and routing system. Also the WAZE App for your cell phone works very well. When you pick up your car, enter La Fortuna and select the police station as your destination in your GPS router. Go west out of La Fortuna entering El Castillo as your destination in your GPS router. Upon arriving in El Castillo turn left through the village proper and continue up the hill approximately 1km. There are two stone pillars at the end of the drive holding a gate to the property on the right. You can write me at pdavis0429@gmail.com or call 1-303-915-0568 go get more detailed directions to the house.

DIRECTIONS TO EL CASTILLO FROM LA FORTUNA:

When you get to La Fortuna go west through the town and pass Tabacon on your right, then go a few more miles (about 4) until you see a tiny little police station on your right..you will take a left there onto a dirt road. Go 3 or 4 miles until you get to an intersection (T) where you must take a left or right. You will see a lot of signs directing you to different places in El Castillo. You will take a left. Go another few miles until you go over a small bridge and take your next right...at more signs. Keep going straight. You will pass the Sky Trek and continue to follow the road for a few miles, keep driving until you go over another small bridge. The first left after this bridge is the entrance to our village. Go through the village proper and then up the hill and you will pass the Serpentarium, then the Butterfly Conservatory (the house is approximately 600 meters from here)..continue going up and you will see Essence Arenal on the right. You will pass two streets on your right and then your house is the 6th house on the right. There are two stone pillars at the end of the drive holding a gate to the property. Please call us when you arrive in La Fortuna and either myself or our caretaker will meet you there. If for some reason we miss each other there will be a key in a combination lockbox. Please call me at (303)915-0568 for the combination.

About the Owner

I am an accountant and live in Colorado. My favorite places to travel are Costa Rica - beautifully country and love the people, and Italy. I love being active and love to travel. I fell in love with Costa Rica - Specifically the Arenal Area as El Castillo is approximately 2000 feet above sea level in the rain forest where the temperature is moderate 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit with cooling breezes and beautiful countryside.

I cannot live without bicycling, skiing, my friends, my husband, books and Television - Almost but not necessarily in that order.

The most unforgettable book that I have ever read is The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. I love the Ender series by Orson Scott Card. My favorite adventure and espionage writer is Nelson Demille because he interjects humer into his main characters. I loved the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon about life in Scotland during its revolt with England and the early days of the settlement of America all combined with time travel.

Two of my most favorite travel destinations are Italy and Costa Rica and when I go I like to join bicycling tours and see the country by bike.

One of my favorite book series and movies was the Hunger Games. I loved the movies Top Gun and also Knights Tale and I mustn't forget The Princess Bride.

I am still a rock music enthusiast as it is very good listening for Biking, skiing and rollerblading. I also like Pucini Operas.

I have to confess that I am a gluttin for carbs which I must reduce at my age and have gotten into juicing. My favorite juice is Banana, green grapes, Orange, pineapple, spinach, slice of lime and crushed ice.

As your Airbnb host I will provide you with a cozy environment that I would live in (and I have). I supplied and decorated the house in a style and comfort pleasing to me as if I were to live there. The renting of my vacation home is a work in progress, and I am open to any and all suggestions because my aim is to ensure my guest's comfort and enjoym

Guestbook comments from the manager

The entrance through the twin bed room is not the only entrance to the Master and there is a lock on the door between the two which could be engaged for privacy. The other entrance it through the patio on the north side of the house. It is an outside entrance and this is in Costa Rica where you do not have to worry about cold weather. In addition, the roof has sufficient overhang so it is is raining you will not get wet while walking along the outside of the house on the sidewalk. Furthermore there are umbrellas provided for your use if it is raining with wind blowing the rain onto the sidewalk.

I brought my son and stayed at this property. Patricia over the phone and caretaker, Erica, in person were both very kind and helpful. We enjoyed the house and the gorgeous views. We went to bed and woke up to so many animal sounds. We miss it! Amazing experience!!

Stunning beautiful home in a magical village

  • 5 of 5
The home is comfortable with a stunning view of the volcano, the rolling hills, birds, and local animals. The husband and wife who care for the home and welcome the guest gave above and beyond wonderful service to us. They gave us information and recommendations which proved to enhance our visit. The beds were extremely comfortable and the open living space encouraged us to enjoy nightly games - family dinners - the big flatscreen t.v. with a wide selection of english programs. We enjoyed walking through the village all the people were so kind and welcoming. We took a walk up the road from the house and found breathtaking views of the lake and volcano. There is a magical tree at the top of the mountain where we took many pictures that we will cherish for a lifetime. The horses and cows are so much fun to look at and enjoyed seeing the local life of the people who live here. Right from the window each morning and evening we watched the farmer walk his cows down the road to be milked. There are local restaurants we enjoyed - the Butterfly Conservation - Eco Snake Zoo (Victor the owner of the snake zoo operates the best restaurant in Costa Rica - a must) all in walking distance. We enjoyed our visit and would return in a heart beat when we get a chance.

Great place

  • 5 of 5
After seeing the house, my wife wanted to duplicate it and build it on our property. The view was great. The house was comfortable for the six of us. Make sure you have four-wheel drive as the road is steep and not paved part of the way.

All in all a fabulous place for resting, staging trips to activities nearby or anything else you might want to do.

belle maison

  • 4 of 5

Fun, beautiful space near numerous adventurous activities, Volcano View!

  • 4 of 5
The adventures begin as you approach the house-- it's quite a way from any paved road. You'll find yourself bumping along several kilometers of rutted, dirt road, followed by an even bumpier, small road heading up the hill. Suddenly you are there at Casa Milon, with a view of Volcano Arenal before you. On the way you will have passed the Butterfly Conservatory (definitely visit), Sky Tram/Sky Trek, the Arenal National park, and the EcoZoo.

The home itself is well appointed. The kitchen had everything we needed (except a good knife- we donated one). I will note that it is a very "open floor plan"-- the walls for two of the three bedrooms and one bathroom are actually open-topped dividers, so sound privacy is not good. Our young adult children preferred to use our master bath for sound privacy. The master bedroom is private but accessed through the twin-bedroom, so if you are traveling with a group that wants individual or couples privacy, this might not be the place. It is good for a family.

Gilberth and Erica were great- Gilberth made our reservations for excellent adventures white water rafting with Desafio Adventures and zip lining at SkyTrek/SkyWalk. The zip lining was amazing. Do it.

There was more to experience, we didn't have much time there and would have enjoyed a few more days. Loved "Pizza Johns" in El Castillo. We mostly cooked in though.

If you stay here, rent an SUV (it's off the very beaten path). The activity companies will provide transportation for an extra fee, but to really explore the area you'd be better off with your own vehicle.

Location

From the Owner

I came to CR with a friend in January of 2012. I had been to Costa Rica before and had to come back. We stayed in El Castillo at another property nearby and looked into purchasing a property. I fell in love with this house the moment I saw it With it's fantastic view of the Volcano Arenal, and rolling hills and pasture land, and it's location in the village - very country and nestled in with the locals. Also there are many, many adventures within 1, 2, 3, and 5 kilometers of the house. The house is spacious and very cozy.
