About the Owner

Although I have retired from the US Army and from the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine, my life is still pretty busy. Home is La Jolla, California, but there is no better place to relax and recharge my batteries than this little paradise right on the beach in Makaha. I have been coming here since 1973. How can you beat having a glass of wine, eating good food, and being with friends.

I took my daughter, son in-law and her two children for 13 days . We stayed in the mountain side cabin and I cant say enough about our visit. We were met by Gloria and welcomed . The house was perfect for our family. The yard was secure so the kids could play outside, the grassy area was perfect for playing, grilling and just relaxing with a good book. The beach is right beyond the fence and is clean, not crowded and supervised by lifeguards. Everything you need for a day on the beach or in the water is there for your use . There is nothing that I would change and will be back year after year... Oh!!! The town and its residents are some of the most friendly I have met and the sat farmers market is a must do. I have told all my friends this is the place to stay...

Want to Get Away!

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I stayed for a week. The property is on the beach at Makaha among other private homes. The first morning we went snorkeling and swam with five turtles. The beach is coral sand and remains cool, even in the sun. The yurts were clean and comfortable with cable TVs. The kitchens are well equipped and we ate outside watching the sun set each night. There are lots of toys, including masks, fins, snorkels, and beach chairs. The property is gated and safe with parking for your car. We will definitely be going back.

the real Hawaii

  • 5 of 5
The small, often owner built cabins and bungalows in the neighborhood tell the story along with the parkland just blocks to the north. This is the Hawaii of the natives as the culture lives today. It is off the beaten path yet not far from many other experiences on the island. Rent a car and ask a local. We loved the beach in the back yard. What a Beach! The kitchens are nice, the bungalows are clean and very unusual in design. Plan to spend plenty of time in the west facing nicely landscaped yard and the beach just outside the fence. Nice stone patio under the Hau tree, by the way. If you want some independence and a semi rural atmosphere of Hawaiian beauty this is it. Lots of bedrooms , can accommodate a pretty large group. Study the pictures. They are representative. Loved our stay.

Return Visit

  • 5 of 5
Highly Recommended! We stayed here last summer (2013), it was so GREAT we decided to return for Spring Break this year. The beach which is right outside the gate was beautiful, the ocean full of life. We swam with large sea turtles, tons of colorful fish and a couple of seals. Spotted some dolphins and whales a little further off shore. A perfect getaway and very relaxing.

Boogie boards, snorkeling equipment, beach chairs all provided with your stay. Bungalows are very clean, well maintained, comfortable and with the windows open, you can fall asleep to the sound of the ocean.

Easy access to grocery stores, restaurants and day trips to other parts of the Island. A MUST for anyone who needs to just getaway from it all.

Sort of OK

The noise from Farrington Hwy is in your ear - there are rumble strips on the road in front of the property. Parking is not that good - vehicles larger than compacts are not recommended unless you park outside the gate on the road. The queen and double beds are old and need to be replaced. The queen bedroom has a/c, the double bedroom has fans. There are no overhead fans to cool the rooms. Everyday amenities are slim to none - you have to go grocery shopping to fill what you need. Makaha Beach is right outside the back gate - a PLUS for this location. If you were going to stay one week, you could probably live with the negatives. Any longer and you'd be wishing you hadn't booked the place.

Owner's Response: We are very sorry that you did not enjoy your stay. The recently installed rumble strips have been a nuisance and the local community is working hard to have them removed. We have never had a complaint about our parking spaces which are 11-13 feet wide (Wikipedia says the usual width in the U.S. is 7.5-9ft). We have just replaced the mattresses. The architecture will not permit overhead fans but we provide Dyson fans which are very cooling when combined with our great ocean breezes. We are definitely away from the hustle and bustle of shops and fast food restaurants. Our bungalows are for those who love living right at one of the best beaches in the world.

Private and away from the crowds

  • 4 of 5
We had considered several properties, but found this one very appealing; and decided on the Makai bungalow. Gloria was very helpful--from reserving the bungalow to getting settled in when we arrived.

We appreciated being close to a public beach, while staying on private property. It was wonderful hearing the surf at night. The bungalow is light and the windows provide a wonderful breeze. The yard is beautifully landscaped, and we even had a curious gecko visit us one day. Having a home base that felt like a home was wonderful during our time on the island. Though it is away from Honolulu, things to see and do are easy drives.

I highly recommend this lovely spot away from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu.

Mahalo for a wonderful visit.

From the Owner

Makaha is quiet, casual, and far away from the crowds of Waikiki. The water, snorkling, and surf are the best on the island. But most of all, the people of Waianae Coast are the most genuine and friendly on all Oahu.

We sit right on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and there is a guaranteed sunset over the ocean 365 days of the year. Makaha is famous for its surf but the diving and snorkling right off shore is also superb
