Spacious Beauty

  • 5 of 5
Our family of seven enjoyed every aspect of Bywater Elegance. It was spacious, clean and very comfortable. The neighborhood offered great photo opportunities as well as wonderful restaurants and eateries. Elizabeth's for dinner one night was our favorite meal of the trip and it's right around the corner from the house. We also appreciated lots of towels in all the bathrooms and air conditioning that worked great.

Interesting Home

  • 3 of 5
The Bywater area is a lot of fun and the house is very close to the French Quarter. We met some of the neighbors and everyone was very nice. Quiet and safe area! The house was well stocked with everything a vacationer would need.

We were quite surprised that there are no smoke alarms in the home, even though legally, there doesn't have to be any. The burglar bars on the windows would greatly hinder any chance of escaping a fire. Several of the bedrooms have no blinds or curtains, which made sleeping past 5:45 am a little difficult.

Purely for safety reasons, we will not stay there again nor will we recommend this vacation rental to anyone.

Owner's Response: new smoke alarms are being installed, and thx for tip that some drapes weren't enough light coverage. We will handle that too!

Perfect for a family who wants to visit New Orleans

  • 5 of 5
What a great house! Our family rented this house for 10 days for our Summer vacation....couldn't have asked for a better house. The house is very spacious, provides a stocked kitchen (pots/pans) in case you want to eat in a day or two, provides a wash and dryer so you don't need to pack as much, and is close to all the sights. You won't be disappointed with this house! I hope everyone enjoys just as much as we did.

Short stay In Bywater-NOLA

  • 4 of 5
We spent two days in bywater neighbourhood and we appreciated our stay. The location is quite good with a car and it's really easy and free to park just In front the door. All the coloured houses around are so nice especially when the weather is sunny...very beautiful pictures ! The house was well equipped for our family (but I don't recommend this house with little children because of the stairs and the open room of the first floor) and I especially liked the kitchen. We unfortunately didn't have time to take advantage of the nice garden...
Cette villa est vraiment une bonne adresse pour les touristes qui veulent passer un bon séjour à New Orleans avec tous les équipements nécessaires, un confort agréable pour 6 à 8 personnes à proximité du French Quarter. Quartier et villa à recommander!

We were a group of 4 - 3 older teenagers and myself - and this home turned out to be perfect for us. I wanted a place where we could be together when we wanted to but that we all had our private space; Carrie's wonderful house was all that and more! We were able to go our own ways during the day as well, as it was possible to just walk to the French Quarter or to a cafe, and then meet up again later on.

The neighbourhood is fascinating with all the different colourful houses, so just being there and walking around was a pleasure in and of itself. We also ate several times at Elizabeth's, just around the corner (try the "Redneck Eggs" for breakfast - poached eggs on fried green tomatoes with hollandaise sauce!) and the Praline Connection on Frenchmen and Chartres (pronounced "PRAW-leen" or so I was told by one of the waiters! Who knew? I always thought it was PRAY-leen!).

I parked the car literally right on front of the house and only used it once the whole time we were there, so that was great. We had one day of torrential rain and thunderstorms where we elected to stay in and we were very cozy spending time on the great couch just reading and hanging out together.

Highly recommended!

Amazing stay in the Bywater

  • 5 of 5
I spent hours researching all of the different homes available in various parts of the city, ultimately deciding on the Bywater and this incredibly charming and comfortable home.

There were four of us coming down from Nashville for the weekend to partake in the Krew Du Vieux in the neighboring Marigny district.

The Bywater area is right next to the Marigny, which borders the French Quarter. The French Quarter is, well, the French Quarter - crowded, loud, packed, touristy and very commercialized. The Marigny blends into the French Quarter almost seamlessly, separated only by Esplanade Street. The Marigny is a great area, a tad bit more commercial then the Bywater, but still a very local and artsy feel to it with some great bars, homes, etc. The Marigny then runs up against a railroad track, and once you walk over it, you're officially in the Bywater.

The Bywater has the feel of many New Orleans neighborhoods with plenty of historic and colorful homes, with beautifully detailed woodwork and trimming, painted colorfully like homes in the Caribbean or Key West. But, this is New Orleans, a major US city, so you have the grit, look and feel of a real urban environment - some homes that have seen better days, graffiti, narrow streets, old warehouses, etc. It has a diverse demographic, which reminds me of Williamsburg or the Lower East Side in NY. Although, there are also lot of creative types - musicians, artists, chefs, etc., which, if you're like me, you might find welcoming. It's a great walking area, and next time I'm down I'd like to rent a bike to get around the neighborhood.

Now on to the questions: Is the area safe? Yes, absolutely. I ran each morning all over the neighborhood all the way up to St. Claude, and all the way down to Canal Street and the French Quarter. Never felt uncomfortable once. We walked freely and comfortably around the hood at night, no issues. We walked to and from Frenchmen Street (15 min), and taxis were easy to come by. It can get a tad quiet late at night, so just be aware of your surroundings. The area has some of the best food in the city (Elizabeth's, Maurepas, Fraddy's), great bars (Vaughn's and JJ's), art galleries, and thrift stores.

Carrie's house, which you came here to learn more about, surpassed all expectations. It's in wonderful shape, comfortable, with a great patio in the back and nice neighbors. She was wonderful to deal with, and we hope to make this trip down to her place an annual visit.
