About the Owner

We are Johnny and Susan Kirkland, we live in New York, on Long Island's North Shore, most of the year, but all of our 4 children have moved out west and made it their home. So, we thought we should follow suit, we just aren't quite ready to leave New York full time yet. We bought our house and stay there several times per year, so you can be sure that all of the creature comforts are available to you. Susan is a retired Special Education Teacher, who still substitute teaches on a regular basis and Johnny is a Physicist and software developer. Since our children have gone, we've picked up a new hobby of raising guide dogs. We have successfully raised Josh, who is a working guide dog, and we have raised London, who is now a Vet Service Dog for a disabled Vietnam veteran, and we have Gretha, a breeder dog for the GDF, as well as Dave and Sushi. All three are black labs who lives with us all of the time. This is where our home's name comes from, The Black Dog Hideaway is a tribute to our love for our guide dogs and the important work they do.

During your visit you may see our son John who takes care of the Black Dog Hideaway and lives in the private basement apartment with a separate entrance, or when you are making a reservation you'll talk to Sue who manages the home and bookings.

Please feel free to contact us anytime, we'd love to hear from you!

Perfect for a reunion

  • 5 of 5
Perfect location. Sue was great to work with - very accommodating. We were in Bozeman for a MSU graduation for which we were hosting a BBQ (at a different location) as well as a mothers day brunch. The kitchen was perfect - enough room for three chefs to prep and cook! Accessories (silverware, place settings, platters, glasses) were plentiful for a large crowd. One note - look at the notes posted inside the cabinets. Black Dog Hideaway was exactly what we needed for two families. Thank you, Sue.

Owner's Response: Johnny and I are so happy we could help you host your graduation party . Thank you for noticing the notes inside the cabinets which explain where the bakeware is located . We have everything someone could want or need for baking, but the design of the cabinet makes it look hidden. Please visit again, and thank you for choosing Black Dog Hideaway.

Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 of 5
This home was the perfect place to meet up with family. Proximity to MSU and downtown allowed us to walk the neighborhood and avoid renting a car. Communication with the owner was effortless and we found everything well organized at the home. Couples will especially enjoy the master retreat suite that expands the entire second floor. If you enjoy cooking, you will appreciate the modern kitchen. Elegant is the perfect adjective for Black Dog Hideaway. Thanks for sharing this home with us.

McClain Family

  • 5 of 5
We had to make last minute plans to travel to Bozeman for a funeral, and hotel rooms were limited, but now I'm so thankful that they were, because the highlight of our trip was being able to share this beautiful home with some family we haven't seen in a long time. There wasn't a single thing we would change about Black Dog Hideaway. It was absolutely beautiful and perfect. I look forward to coming back (in a warmer time of year) and staying for a longer period of time.

The town of Bozeman is a wonderful place to gather. We hope that the time your family spent at our home was peaceful and a soft place to fall and get comfort. Please come back again in happier times and warmer weather.
Thank you again for choosing Black Dog Hideaway.

Our best VBRO rental ever! We stayed for a month and felt like we were home. Comfortable home with great furnishings, comfortable beds, clean. Enjoyed being within walking distance to downtown Main Street, to pretty parks, and in the historic district filed with beautiful homes. Gourmet kitchen with everything needed. New washer. Owners were truly interested in our having a wonderful vacation.

Owner's Response: Johnny and I are so happy that you felt comfortable and at home in our house! You are right, the location is fabulous and an easy walk to where ever a guest would like to go. We hope you will find your way back to Bozeman and to Black Dog Hideaway . We will keep the porch light on. Best regards, Sue and Johnny

From the Owner

We fell in love with this house the moment we stepped inside, and we know that you will too! There are two adorable porch swings on the front porch, and the subtle character is amazing. Downstairs, you'll notice the original woodwork, and a beautiful stained glass lighting fixture over the dining room table. Upstairs was updated with comfort in mind. This house has the best of both worlds, old world history and modern updates and comforts. Plus, you can't beat the location, and proximity to downtown Bozeman!
