Amazing Place in Paradise!
Nancy was the best hostess you could possibly have. She was only a phone call away and went out of her way to make reservations, answer questions, and do anything she could for you. We would definitely like to return to this beautiful place.
It was heavenly to wake to the sound of birds. My husband and I would take our breakfast to the little lookout tower and take pictures of parrots and hummingbirds. One misty morning, my sister-in-law woke to 5 or 6 toucans eating berries in a tree on the hill outside her bedroom. My favorite place was the hammock on the porch. I rested in it for hours while my group went on a canopy tour zip line and hike.
The house is like a beautiful cabin with more windows and glass doors than walls, comfortable furniture and an amazing kitchen. My husband and brother-in-law were especially impressed with the beautiful wood all over the place. The bathrooms are rather basic, with just a simple shower, but even it had a window you could open while you showered to watch for birds.
*A word of caution for those who are not really into the outdoors...It almost felt like we were camping because nature was everywhere. (You can't be too afraid of bugs here. Not that we were overrun with them, but you can count on seeing some in the house. None of them bothered us or seemed dangerous, but don't leave food out, or the ants will find it.) There was no phone (I don't know if cell phones would work, because we didn't have any), and internet was spotty, but we would head down the mountain a little ways to the lodge if we needed anything. Nancy was always available in person or on the phone to answer questions or help with reservations. Believe me, though, this is the most luxurious "camping" you will ever do. :)
I can't say enough about the beauty of this place. The grounds were landscaped with hydrangeas in stone planters and little palms around the pool (which we never used because it was rainy or cool the whole time...but we sat in the hot tub down at the lodge, and it was lovely). Believe me, the pictures don't do this place justice.
Oh, and I have to recommend Rancho Margo for dinner. It is incredible, and not just because of the food (which was good, but not the best part). We drove there in the dark...it is only a few minutes from the cabin. There were fireflies sparkling everywhere! I was going to go into detail about the restaurant, but words can't really describe it. It was an adventure worth experiencing.
I absolutely recommend staying at Pie in the Sky!
Even better than the pictures
As beautiful as the photos are, it's even better in person! The entire property is beautifully landscaped, very clean, comfortable beds, and the view - the VIEW! My husband (who typically is not an early riser) got up at 5:30 a.m. one morning just to sit on the yoga deck and watch the wildlife - the wakeup shouting of the howler monkeys was unreal!
My favorite afternoon - the kids took advantage of the pool, and we adults just sat on the covered deck and watched thunderstorms roll in, one after another, across the volcano and the lake. There were numerous rainbows that came in behind each storm. The landscape changed every 10 minutes! It was truly breathtaking.
We also had a phenomenal time swimming in the thermal river in nearby Fortuna (Nancy pointed us in the right direction) and hiking on the property - there's a jungle trail just beyond the house.
Nancy was such a gracious host and was extremely helpful in recommending restaurants, etc.
One recommendation: it would be very helpful if guests could utilize the washer/dryer that are next to the pool, however.
Overall, we loved our time here!
Gorgeous Views, Well Eqiuped House
The driveway to the house is steep. There was one day when our van driver could not make it up and we had to meet him at the bottom of the driveway. The road from La Fortuna to the property is long and unpaved, so just be prepared to add this commute time to your daily touring. That being said, it is lovely to start and end your day on this lovely property. One day we just stayed at the house and did the rainforest walk which can be reached from the property.
Nancy was an absolute pleasure to deal with. I knew when I booked with her, just by her manner, that our reservation was solid, that her property would be in great shape, and that she ran a professional operation. She even lent us a portable crib that her grandchildren use when they visit. Her staff came quickly when we had questions or needed assistance. My only suggestion is that they add more lighting inside the house. It was a bit dark for my taste.
Enjoy this comfortable property.
Lovely, Peaceful, Can't Be BeatLovely, Peaceful, Can't Be Beat
Majestic Lodge (the bed and breakfast at the bottom of the hill - managed by the same people) itself is simply beautiful and has lovely views of Arenal Volcano. It is truly a beautiful, peaceful place at a reasonable rates. Nancy, who is the manager for both the houses and the lodge, is just terrific. She is always just a phone call away and willing to make reservations for anything you might want to do. Just tell her what you want to do and she'll basically make sure it happens.
Now for the house: at the top of their hill (just up from the Lodge) is a whole other compound with Pie In the Sky (a two-bedroom house for rent), a larger house with several bedrooms and a living room, and two one-room casitas with private baths. Perched on the mountaintop, we were in a paradise with a rainforest behind us and facing a gorgeous view of Lake Arenal. It was amazing. There is a gazebo for watching the sunset or the forest. There is a swimming pool up there and facilities for grilling. It was just wonderful.
Nancy, the manager, could not have been more responsive or easier to deal with. Every time I emailed her before we came – she got right back to me – cheerfully and quickly! Thank you, Nancy, for all that you did to make our trip such a success.

- Pie in the Sky will not disappoint. This home is located on the top of a mountain, away from it all, but close enough to all local activities. We do not provide transportation up and down the mountain, so you must have a four wheel drive car. Amenities at the Majestic Lodge are not for use of the private rental homes.
